Australia’s Senate on Monday censured an Indigenous woman parliamentarian over her protest against King Charles during his visit to the parliament last month when she accused the British monarch of genocide. Thorpe’s protest was disruptive and she did not respect the democratic institutions, the motion said. “I’ll do it again, and I’ll do it every time,” Thorpe shouted in parliament when Simon Birmingham, the opposition leader in the Senate, was making his comments on the motion. She was told to recite the affirmation — a form of parliamentary oath that omits a reference to God — as written. Their ancestors arrived on the continent some 50,000 years before British colonists yet were marginalized during colonial rule and are not mentioned in Australia’s 123-year-old constitution.

The necklace has been worn at two British coronations and may contain diamonds from the infamous necklace at the heart of a scandal that tainted the reputation of Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France. The exact origins of the necklace have not been recorded, with Sotheby’s stressing it does not know for certain. That history centers on Louis XV, the king of France, who commissioned a lavish diamond necklace for his mistress, Madam Du Barry, in 1722 — two years before he died of smallpox. Marie Antoinette, the country's new queen consort, declined to buy the necklace despite her reputation for extravagance. In 2022, bracelets that once belonged to Marie Antoinette sold for more than $8 million at auction, also in Geneva.

But new research suggests that one English woman convicted of witchcraft and condemned to be hanged may have escaped the noose. Alice Molland – who has long held the tragic record of being the last woman in England to be hanged as a “witch” – was sentenced to death in 1685. In June 1685, Avis Molland – by now widowed – emerges in court records as an informant about a potential revolt, at a time when the Duke of Monmouth was attempting a rebellion against the king. Historical evidence then pointed the study authors to a Belgian tombstone export business thriving at the time, where they theorize the tombstone began its journey. Burial within a church was typically saved for high-status individuals and clergy, and Yeardley was one of two knights to die while the Jamestown church was in use, according to Jamestown Rediscovery. Colonial period cemeteries have suffered neglect and vandalism, with the Knight’s Tombstone likely surviving for as long as it did because vegetation concealed it, she added. It seems to be pretty inherent there in nature, but most (colonists) didn’t have the resources to import a nice carved stone,” Key said. “There were a lot of people being buried in the church, but only one of them had a big old black (limestone) tombstone from Belgium.”

Now, when I travel, I like to ask people about how American politics directly affect their lives. Johnson isn’t the first prime minister to reminisce about his life, time in office and interactions with the late Queen in an autobiography. Buckingham Palace has a policy not to comment on books released about the royal family and as such has not confirmed or denied Johnson’s assertions.
