Jim Pillen's support of a bill that would change the state's system of allocating electoral votes from one determined by individual congressional districts to one that would award the state's five electoral votes to the statewide victor. Nebraska Democrats vehemently fought back against this electoral change before the legislative session ended earlier this month and the measure didn't advance. If Nebraska went through with its change, Trump would likely win the state's entire share of electoral votes, given its strong GOP orientation. But if Maine also switched to a winner-take-all system before the 2024 election, Biden would be heavily favored to win all of that state's electoral votes and would thus win the Electoral College (270 to 268). Maine Democrats — who control the state legislature — had generally not spoken of tweaking their electoral allocation system ahead of 2024.

Joe Biden and Donald Trump are set to face off in the first presidential rematch since 1956. It’s that a lead of any margin for Trump was unheard of during the 2020 campaign – not a single poll that met CNN’s standards for publication showed Trump leading Biden nationally. It’s possible that if consumer sentiment continues to improve or border crossings decline, Biden could pick up steam against Trump. This means that it isn’t enough for Biden merely to win voters who dislike both men. For more people to turn against Trump, Biden’s best hope may lie with the four criminal indictments against the former president.

Presidential reputations have little to do with electoral performance. Abraham Lincoln , our most beloved president, did not even win 40% of the popular vote when he ran in 1860. Richard Nixon , arguably our least beloved, won an overwhelming victory on Nov. 7, 1972—50 years ago this week. When the results were in, Nixon had defeated South Dakota Senator George McGovern by nearly 20 million votes and by an even wider margin in the electoral college (520-17). It seemed like a historic realignment, one that would position Republicans for decades of success.
