More people were severely injured in the attack in the early hours of Thursday at Pont-Sonde, in the agricultural region of Artibonite in western Haiti. “For now, reinforcements are at the location to contain the situation and security forces are in control,” the spokesperson said. Many victims were shot in the head as gang members went house to house, Horace said. The U.N. estimated at the end of September that 3,661 people had been killed in the gang violence since January.

CNN —At least 70 people, including three infants, were killed in a gang attack in the central Haiti town of Pont Sondé, the United Nations Human Rights Office said in a statement on Friday. Members of the “Gran Grif” gang used automatic rifles to kill at least 70 people on Thursday, including 10 women and three infants, according to the UN. The attack occurred in Haiti’s Artibonite department, a crucial agricultural center about 50 miles north of Port-au-Prince, where gang violence has continued to spread, according to the UN. At least 16 people were seriously injured in the attack, including two gang members hit during an exchange of fire with Haitian police, the UN said. “Despite an extremely difficult security context, the victims of this attack are being cared for by local institutions,” the ministry said.

Wall Street returned to its winning ways this week — and Nvidia 's blowout earnings report Wednesday night was a big reason why. Twenty-six of our 32 portfolio stocks have delivered their results this earnings season (we didn't own Abbott Labs at the time of its report). It was a muted week for macroeconomic data, but we did get a slightly better-than-expected January existing home sales report on Thursday. In the week ahead, two more Club names are set to report earnings before a market-moving economic update arrives Thursday morning. Goldman Sachs is bullish about generative artificial intelligence: It expects it will drive upside in the broader S & P 500 — and one specific corner of tech. An AI-fueled rally has already brought the S & P 500 to highs this year, but Goldman predicts there's going to be further upside. Thanks to demand for generative AI, supply of AI server equipment is likely to get a boost in the next couple of years, Goldman Sachs said in a separate report on June 1. Currently, there are around 150,000 units of generative-related AI server shipment this year — around 1% of total server shipment, according to the bank. It named buy-rated Unimicron , giving it a price target of 235 Taiwanese dollars, or upside of around 33%, as well as Kinsus (price target of 180 Taiwanese dollars, or 55% upside), Taiwan Union Technology (price target of 93 Taiwanese dollars, or 22% upside) and Elan Microelectronics (price target of 250 Taiwanese dollars, or 141% upside).

For hundreds of years, a strange species of fish with long fanglike teeth that eats its own kind and spends most of its time at the bottom of the ocean has somehow found its way to the shores of the West Coast. The latest appearance by a lancetfish, as the species is known, was on a beach in Oregon, state officials said Monday, prompting more speculation about why the deep-sea creature occasionally surfaces on land. Lancetfish are obscure in part because they have no commercial appeal — meaning that they don’t taste good. The silvery and gelatinous fish have a “scientific name translates to something like scaleless lizard or scaleless dragon,” and they look the part, said Elan Portner, a scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, one place where lancetfish have been found washed ashore. Lancetfish also “migrate as far north as subarctic areas like Alaska’s Bering Sea to feed,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The government in July committed to aiming for an upgrade to emerging market status in at least one major index by 2025. But infighting is delaying much-needed market reforms, three officials familiar with the discussions said. Additional liquidity is seen as crucial for Vietnamese banks, which account for about a third of the stock market capitalization, to raise their comparatively low capital buffers, thus boosting financial stability. Index provider MSCI published in June a long list of reforms Vietnam needed to apply before an upgrade could be considered.

Few working journalists have written history with as much elan and narrative force as the British author Paul Johnson , who died this week at age 94. Johnson spent his early career editing the New Statesman, later contributing to the Spectator, Commentary and others, including these pages. Our concerns around high-multiple tech firms stem from the market's challenge of correctly valuing them. Consistent with our angst over high-multiple tech stocks, we're selling some Microsoft and Nvidia . The former trades at around 23-times the next 12 months of earnings, while the latter trades at around 38-times. With expenses growth at tech firms still not aligned with more muted revenue expectations, our trims today hedge us in the event earnings disappoint this season.
