Founders of some of Europe's largest technology unicorns on Monday backed an open letter calling for a "tech renaissance" fueled by the creation of a single pan-European entity to promote startups and innovation in the bloc. But because of that, our startup scene is fragmented," read the open letter, which was published Monday on a newly created website for the EU Inc initiative. This results in "stifled momentum, unrealized potential, and an artificial limit on our startups' chances of success." So-called 28th regimes are proposed legal frameworks within the EU that offer an alternative to member states' own national rules instead of replacing them. The new structure of EU Inc would "standardize investment processes, simplify cross-border operations, and create a unified employee stock options framework" to help European startups scale rapidly and attract more capital, according to a Monday press release.

French business planning software startup Pigment has raised $88 million in a funding round led by ICONIQ, the private investment fund that manages the money of tech billionaires such as Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey. Pigment is best known for its business planning and forecasting platform that's designed to be more user-friendly than Microsoft's spreadsheet software Excel. As well as Microsoft, Pigment also views enterprise software tools from giants like Google, SAP and Oracle as rivals. It introduced a new service called Pigment AI last month, on the heels of heightened buzz surrounding AI and products like ChatGPT, which lets clients query data, identify patterns and automate analysis and reporting.

Pigment's cofounder shared how the team raised $65 million in Series B funding without a pitch deck. That inspired her to cofound Pigment, a startup based in France that recently raised $65 million in Series B funding from IVP and Meritech Capital. The capital was an extension of a Series B round in late 2021. Pigment — which competes against software companies like SAP, Oracle, Workday, and Anaplan — raised $73 million in Series B funding led by Greenoaks in November. Crespo told Insider that the company hadn't been planning to raise additional funding but was contacted by IVP and Meritech, which had heard about Pigment from customers.
