Sept 30 (Reuters) - A semi-truck carrying thousands of gallons of a toxic substance crashed in southern Illinois, and the multi-vehicle accident killed five people and left five seriously injured, officials said on Saturday. Early estimates indicated that 4,000 gallons were spilled, leading to about 500 people being evacuated from the area, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency said. The accident led to an evacuation within a mile's radius of the crash due to the plume from ammonia leak, state police said. Illinois State Police said it was notified about the crash "involving multiple vehicles, including a semi-truck that is leaking anhydrous ammonia." A Lowe's in Georgia has rehired a woman it fired for trying to stop suspected shoplifters. "I didn't expect to get terminated," she told local news. Rincon Police Department said that on June 25, three people visited the Lowe's store, "loaded multiple items into shopping carts, and exited the store without paying for the merchandise." Hansbrough "was fired for attempting to stop the theft" because her action of grabbing the cart violated company policy, the police said. "They say that if you see somebody stealing something out the door, not to pursue, not to go out," Hansbrough told local news outlet The Effingham Herald.

Seven were killed and dozens wounded by a gunman wielding an AR-15-style rifle during an Independence Day parade in suburban Chicago. An Illinois judge has temporarily blocked a new ban on military-style semiautomatic weapons in a setback for Gov. J.B. Pritzker , who championed the law in the wake of a July 4 mass shooting by a gunman wielding an AR-15-style rifle. Judge Joshua Morrison of Effingham Circuit Court in southeastern Illinois granted a temporary restraining order against implementing the law in a lawsuit brought on behalf of hundreds of plaintiffs on the grounds that the legislative maneuvers used to pass the law were unconstitutional.
