Disgraced former South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh scored a big legal win last week after the South Carolina Supreme Court agreed to hear his appeal for a new murder trial. Murdaugh’s lawyer, however, is not worried and is focused on their appellant cases. Last week, the state Supreme Court agreed to hear Murdaugh’s state appeal for a new murder trial based on allegations that a court clerk tampered with the jury that convicted him. Former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal’s decision came after an evidentiary hearing into whether Hill’s comments during the trial influenced the jury. “We are really looking forward to making our case to the Supreme Court,” Griffin said.

CNN —Esteban Wood still remembers the time a 74-year-old Mexican farmer in Homestead, Florida, collapsed on the job from extreme heat. Such outdoor workers include lifeguards, transportation employees, ironworkers, agricultural workers and letter carriers. States like California, Colorado, Minnesota and Washington, have some heat protections for workers but they are not uniform or sweeping. For example, Minnesota’s protections only apply to indoor workers while California’s heat protections include both indoor and outdoor workers. The government must implement wage protections alongside heat protections, said Dr. Kristina Dahl, a principal climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Interest in ultra-bearish takes on the market or the economy is on the up based on raw search data. In both communities, users are sounding the alarm on all sorts of apocalyptic scenarios for the economy, with some predicting a stock market crash, housing market crash, or a total collapse of the US financial system. About 730,000 people moved to Florida between July 2021 and July 2022, according to the latest census data available. Israel has so far been vague about its long-term plans for Gaza. Diplomats in Washington, the United Nations, the Middle East and beyond have also started weighing the options. Of course the one that spoiled that streak was the agonising one-point semi-final defeat by South Africa, but it is still an England team unrecognisable in confidence and execution from the one that endured a dismal August warm-up campaign. England eventually advanced as pool winners, then beat Fiji before their Springbok loss, while Argentina improved to beat Japan to clinch second place then see off Wales in the quarter-final. How Jesmyn Ward Is Reimagining Southern Literature
  + stars: | 2023-10-13 | by ( Imani Perry | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +5 min
Ward is classically beautiful — delicate and golden-skinned with her hair hanging in long curls. The town is important to Ward for another reason, though: Her great-grandfather Harry was the son of a white mother, Edna. Ward borrowed her family’s complex racial history in writing “Sing, Unburied, Sing.” That family history tells us something about how Ward thinks about history and its relationship to her fiction. The contours of Ward’s life were formed by two hurricanes. In 1969, Hurricane Camille struck, marking a terrible watershed in Black life on the Gulf Coast.

MARSEILLE, France, Oct 12 (Reuters) - England coach Steve Borthwick looks set to make radical changes for Sunday's World Cup quarter-final against Fiji by dropping George Ford and starting Marcus Smith at fullback, strengthening his midfield defence and injecting some energy into the attack. However, while his defence and aerial skills are superior to Smith's, Steward has shown little in attack - though he is far from alone there. Defence generally has not been the issue for England as they racked up four wins in a row. Before the Samoa game they had the best defence in the tournament and had conceded only one try. England have made the second-fewest carries (108.8) for the second-fewest metres (461.3), they rank sixth for defenders beaten (22.5) and last for offloads (5.8).

Backyard tiny homes, called ADUs, are becoming increasingly popular. That's because government-backed mortgage providers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac set the strict standard for all other mortgage lenders. Sometimes, when financing an ADU loan, programs like RCUs may consider the property's worth after the ADU is constructed when underwriting the loan. Clark and her husband moved into the main home, and Sandoval-Clark and her family live in the ADU.

However, the goal was ruled out by the referee for offside. The referees' body, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), later admitted it was the wrong decision to disallow Diaz's effort, blaming human error, and "should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention". In a statement on Sunday, the PGMOL said: "Darren England, VAR on the Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool fixture, and Dan Cook, (assistant VAR) on the same game, have been replaced for the Nottingham Forest v Brentford and Fulham v Chelsea matches today and tomorrow night respectively. England, who made 12 changes from the starting line-up against Japan, scored 11 tries, including five for 20-year-old winger Arundell that equalled an England record, albeit against the lowest ranked team in the tournament playing at their first World Cup. Samoa and Japan have five, Argentina four and Chile are yet to register after three defeats. It was one-way traffic by then and Arundell got his fourth, chipping and gathering his own kick. Chile showed touches of ambition in the first half but never really threatened and were chasing shadows after the break. In 2012, three months after Eddie Scott became sheriff of Clay County, Miss., a claim by a woman he had helped put behind bars threatened to tarnish his earliest days in office. The woman said in an April court filing that, while chief deputy less than three years earlier, he had coerced her into a sexual relationship after she was arrested. She laid out her allegations in state circuit court in October 2012 and asked a judge to overturn her prison sentence. To back up her story, the 26-year-old showed suggestive letters with a return address of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and signed by then-Chief Deputy Scott, who was 47. “Hey Sexy,” he wrote to her in prison nine months before his election to the top job.
