And those most likely to be left behind are workers without four-year college degrees. Yet one in five workers with only a high school diploma defied the odds, according to a new study by Burning Glass Institute, an independent nonprofit research center. Those workers earned more than $70,000 a year — above the median income of college graduates — by the age of 40. The researchers identified 73 such promising starter jobs, including bank teller, pharmacy aide and restaurant host. The new report adds to a growing body of evidence that routes to upward mobility in America exist for the 60 percent of the nation’s labor force without a four-year college degree.

President Joe Biden hosted a formal ceremony Wednesday to publicly celebrate his executive order establishing an initiative to increase funding for Hispanic-serving institutions and create a board of advisors on HSIs. Flores said the executive order shows a federal understanding of how crucial HSIs are to the future of the nation. The more than 500 HSIs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico serve more than 4.7 million students every year, according to federal data. Many students are low-income, and nearly a third are eligible for Pell grants, which are federal scholarships for students in need. “The president’s executive order will strengthen these critical institutions and build their capacity to provide economic mobility for all their students.”

Employers might not ask if you have a degree, but many still care, a labor market expert told BI. AdvertisementDeming said many employers look upon a worker with a four-year degree as an investment — one that can be molded into what the firm wants. "What people are looking for, because it's the easiest and laziest filter, is a four-year degree from a 'good school,'" he said. "He's been the finalist for five different positions where they said, 'You're actually the best candidate we interviewed, but we require a four-year degree,'" Hyams said. Often, that might mean a four-year degree.

Why so many entry-level jobs aren't entry-level

"That's really frustrating for entry-level job seekers like me," Goyenka told Business Insider. AdvertisementShe told BI that the volume of vacancies for entry-level tech roles has been declining for about three years in several countries where Generation operates. Generation found in a survey that 94% of employers required that applicants for entry-level tech jobs have experience working in a related field. Beyond raising their standards for entry-level positions, some employers in various industries simply aren't posting as many of these jobs. In a prior role, he spent more than 15 years filling staff-level tech jobs.

When the white Gen X child turned 27 in 2005, they could expect to make more than $34,000. But Mr. Cain did have a strong community — which he said taught him entrepreneurship and showed him he could dream big. Mr. Cain, 35, got a two-year degree in business management and first worked as a bank teller and financial adviser. At the same time, white millennials born to poor parents had a harder time than their white Gen X counterparts. Unlike Mr. Cain, Mr. Brown did not have a strong sense of community, as he bounced between his mother, his father and his grandparents.

To reread "Hillbilly Elegy" now, as I did this week, is to feel a sense of disorientation. JD Vance the author sounds a lot different than JD Vance the politician. Personally, I first read "Hillbilly Elegy" in college, in an earnest if somewhat contrived attempt to better understand communities unlike mine. On stage, he recounted a story that also appears in "Hillbilly Elegy," where Mamaw bluntly threatens violence against one of Vance's friends. There are hints of this in "Hillbilly Elegy" as well: He served as a public affairs Marine, where he was trained in the art of media relations, including "how stay on message."

As the popularity of custom-designed water tanks grew, local builders became specialized in their craft. Polls, enrollment statistics, social media posts and education economists agree: We are seeing a growing skepticism of college among many American teenagers and their parents. That is why we want to hear from people who have graduated high school in the past several years or who are graduating in 2025. How are you thinking about your decision to attend college? I will read every response to this questionnaire as I’m researching my article, because I’m looking for a wide array of perspectives to inform my reporting. I will not use your contact information for anything but my reporting, and I won’t share it outside our newsroom.
Given this truism, it's no wonder that the populations of America's so-called superstar cities have stagnated while the Sun Belt's metropolitan areas have boomed. The COVID-era transition to more remote work accelerated this process of "domestic offshoring," a recent study by the workforce-analytics company ADP found. Domestic offshoring regionally segregates middle- and working-class employees from their employers, making it far more difficult for the former group to advance professionally. Domestic offshoring threatens to lock in these effects, potentially costing the country trillions of dollars in forgone wealth creation. But if domestic offshoring persists, fewer of the city's other residents will be middle-class professionals; those people will tend to congregate in domestic-offshoring sites.

Despite this income, my husband and I have not agreed to — nor do we plan to — pay for the college tuition of our oldest daughter, a sophomore at the University of Iowa. To be fair, we've decided that we, as parents, don't get to choose which college our children attend. With rising tuition costs, my husband and I think it's essential to evaluate whether the outcomes in terms of ROI justify the financial outlay for college. Committing to paying for one child's college education means we must do the same for all of them to maintain fairness. Evaluating whether to pay for our kids' college tuition was a challenging decision, but it's rooted in our desire to foster autonomy, responsibility, and financial prudence.

The city of Denver, Colorado, has undergone notable growth as skilled professionals and businesses move into the state that prides itself on 300 days of sunshine. And I don't think any place checks as many boxes as Denver does," said the city's mayor, Mike Johnston. Now, the city is facing both housing and labor shortages. Denver needs more workers to come in and fill job openings, yet it's already short 70,000 homes. That's about 15% of the price of an average home in Denver, according to real estate site Zillow.

The past few years have been tough for edtech companies. In recent months, multiple edtech startups have raised fresh funding rounds while specifically touting AI as a core part of their business model. These deals could signal that AI is ushering in a new era for edtech companies, and VCs who invest in the space are excited about the renaissance. And Ednition, also one of Donnelly's portfolio companies, provides an infrastructure-as-a-service platform for other edtech companies to improve the data that goes into their AI models. That's why it's so important to invest in ed-tech AI startups that help people rethink how they interact with technology and learn new skills necessary to successfully enter the workforce, he said.

Compared with Millennials, especially, who entered the workforce in the Dark Ages known as the Great Recession, the Gen Z experience is a dream. But Gen Z isn’t having an easy go of it either. Gen Z hasn’t had a chance to get a foot in the door. “Many Gen Zers also indicated their first step in managing behavioral-health challenges was going to TikTok or Reddit for advice,” the report said. Harvard research indicates friendships with richer people are linked to upward economic mobility. AdvertisementBefriending rich people can do a whole lot to boost your economic mobility, but you need to be able to find them first. Research from Harvard economist Raj Chetty has shown that friendships with richer people are linked to upward economic mobility. But to do that, you need to live in areas where you'll be able to mix across income levels. That's because, among children who grow up in areas where lower-income kids have more higher-income friends, there's "much higher rates of upward mobility."

If you like your situation right now — your job, your house, your car — you can keep it. The labor market has cooled off somewhat, making it less advantageous to hunt for a new job. The car market is in a similar situation. Employers are hiring as if there's a relatively weak labor market, not a strong one. Yes, the labor market is strong, but it's not a great time to go looking for a new job.

In part, that was because it was just impossible to trace Irish famine immigrants and find out what had happened to them. This is just inconceivable to anyone who had ever thought about the famine Irish given the obstacles that faced them. Biden is one of four US presidents who descended from Irish famine immigrants. The famine immigrants really were the ones who cemented the idea of the American Dream as we understand it today. At the time, the neighborhood was home to the more Irish immigrants than any other part of the city.

Opinion | Universities Need to Stick to Their Mission

For over a century, an understanding existed between American universities and the rest of the country. Universities educated the nation’s future citizens in whatever ways they saw fit. Their faculty determined what kind of research to carry out and how, with the understanding that innovation drives economic progress. “Politically, what society expects of us is to train citizens and provide economic mobility, and that has been the bedrock of political and economic support for universities. But if universities are not fulfilling these missions, and are seen as prioritizing other missions instead, that political bargain becomes very fragile.”
