“It’s both persuading and mobilizing at the same time – really until the end,” said Dan Kanninen, battleground director for the Harris campaign. In Pennsylvania, Harris lacks a key element of Biden’s appeal: The Catholic, working-class son of Scranton had local and cultural ties to the state. Vice President Kamala Harris speaks at a campaign event in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, on October 16, 2024. “Kamala is for they/them,” a Trump campaign ad declares. But he said it was clear to him that the Harris campaign has learned lessons from 2016.

The trio of blue wall states offer promise to Vice President Harris and former President Trump. She's worked to rally union workers — a key voting bloc — around her campaign. But Loge also pointed to a newly-released Emerson College poll, which showed that Harris' union support varied by state. In the Quinnipiac poll, Michigan voters gave Trump an eight-point edge (53% to 45%) on the economy. And she's aiming to win over voters — especially union workers — in smaller cities where Trump found success in 2016.

New focus groups of skeptical young men planning to vote in this fall’s most critical battleground states illustrate how, for these voters, it’s all about Donald Trump. Polling has shown a significant gender gap in the race, with Trump holding the upper hand among men and Harris with women. Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris debate for the first time during the presidential election campaign on Sept. 10. All but two of the voters leaning toward Harris said abortion will be a big factor in their vote. Asked to describe their generation, many of these young men painted a negative picture.

The fight over Wisconsin — considered a must-win for Harris as part of Democrats’ so-called blue wall — could tilt the election. Tim Walz has re-energized staff members in the state, a campaign official told NBC News. With more than 200 staffers statewide, the Harris campaign touts 48 offices across Wisconsin, including some in smaller, more rural areas that Trump won in 2020. But the Trump campaign is mounting its own effort in the state. An RNC official also said the Trump campaign and the Wisconsin GOP have more than 70 staff members and 40 offices across the state.

Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. This trio of states has arguably become the most consistent tipping point in American politics. In the nine elections since 1920 when they split their vote, the candidate who carried two of these three states won seven times.

Tim Walz, the running mate of Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, speaks during a campaign rally in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Aug. 7, 2024. Tim Walz, the Democratic running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris, owns no stocks, bonds or real estate, according to his most recent financial disclosure. If Walz is elected vice president in November, he would make an annual salary of $284,600, based on 2024 rates. Walz's modest financial profile stands in stark contrast to that of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who is a billionaire several times over, and to Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio. Forbes estimates Vance's net worth, based on publicly reported investments and cash, to be between $3 million and $10 million.

Enter Vance, who wants to halt any sort of sustained momentum for Harris as she stumps with her eventual vice presidential pick. The senator is seemingly aiming to get ahead of the news cycle to blunt a potential Democratic vice presidential honeymoon period. Harris will use her tour to blitz battleground states and introduce her running mate to voters. Megan Varner/Getty ImagesSo Vance's plan to lay into Harris and her running mate will be a tricky balancing act. Some voters will applaud Vance's shadow tour of Harris' vice presidential rollout, while others will view it as a stunt.

On a Monday in mid-March, the Wisconsin Republican Party gathered about 50 conservative activists on a Zoom call to train them in how to become poll workers, helping oversee and monitor the casting and counting of votes. Heavily Democratic areas of the battleground state were a key focus. “Eau Claire, Madison, Milwaukee — that type,” Mike Hoffman, the state party’s election integrity director, said as he ticked off places being targeted. “We’re keeping a close eye on you,” he recounted telling one city clerk, according to audio recordings of the party’s training sessions obtained by The New York Times. They will focus on every aspect of voting, including mail ballots, voting machines and post-Election Day recounts and audits.

One of his videos provided the missing piece to link 400-year-old fossils with living euglenoids. And it helped them solve a scientific mystery that's confused biologists for decades. To find ancient evidence of euglenoids, van de Schootbrugge and his colleagues looked at microfossils — teensy fossils that are only a few millimeters in size. AdvertisementA chance viewing of a YouTube video helped van de Schootbrugge and his colleagues link the fossils and living euglenoids. As a gray cloud and a pungent smell moved through the Twin Cities on Wednesday, normally bustling bike lanes and running trails were largely deserted. The air quality reached unhealthy levels in Minneapolis, St. Paul and much of Minnesota on Wednesday, as the Upper Midwest became the latest pocket of the country to have its air fouled by smoke drifting south from wildfires that have been burning across Canada for weeks. As in New York and much of the East Coast last week, Minnesotans were looking to the skies and to the Air Quality Index to make sense of what was going on around them. On Wednesday, Minneapolis and St. Paul recorded Air Quality Index readings above 250, which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises is “very unhealthy” for most people. The smoke spread across other parts of the Upper Midwest, too.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. He imagines a boy sitting “upon the high and giddy mast” of a ship tossed by wind and waves. “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown,” concludes the king in Shakespeare’s play. Russia said that President Vladimir Putin was the intended target of a foiled Ukrainian drone attack on the Kremlin, an allegation Ukraine denied. The unfortunate monarch who was the last to own the original St. Edward’s Crown, King Charles I, was convicted of treason and beheaded on January 30, 1649.

A video showing a triangular, metallic object gliding through the sky has been previously identified as computer generated and Reuters found no evidence that it shows an unidentified flying object over Eau Claire, Wisconsin, as claimed on social media. Posts in March 2023 describing the clip as an authentic recording of an object flying over Wisconsin are viewable (here) and (here). However, portions of this video have been making appearances online for years, for example, an iteration of the clip posted in March 2016 to DailyMotion.com can be found (here) . Chad Hoyord, deputy chief of the Eau Claire Police, told Reuters via email that his department was “not aware of any reports of this nature in the City of Eau Claire.” Reuters did not find any verifiable evidence of recent UFO sightings in Eau Claire, Wisconsin either. There is no evidence to support claims that this video depicts an object flying over the city of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Wisconsin Republicans voted Thursday to again allow therapists, social workers and counselors to try to change LGBTQ clients’ gender identities and sexual orientations — a discredited practice known as conversion therapy. A ban on conversion therapy was passed in 2020 by a state board within the Democratic governor’s administration overseeing licensing for mental health professionals. At least 20 states and the District of Columbia have outlawed conversion therapy for minors, according to the Movement Advancement Project, a pro-LGBTQ rights think tank. He said that’s all that’s at issue, not whether conversion therapy is morally or ethically right or wrong. “(The ban on conversion therapy) is necessary to protect the mental health of children in our state,” Herstand said.
In an NBC News poll of registered voters last month, economic concerns beat out every other issue. Recent data from three swing states — Wisconsin, Arizona and Pennsylvania — sheds light on the varying economic pressures that might influence choices at the ballot box. Tony Evers faces Republican challenger Tim Michels, the job market is hot. Gas prices in the state have recently come down to an average of $3.60 a gallon, compared to $3.76 nationally, after this summer’s nationwide surge. Wisconsin’s metro areas aren’t big enough to be broken out in federal data, but food prices in the Midwest have risen by 12.7% over the last year, compared to 11.2% nationally.
