Meta is teaming up with Snapchat and TikTok as part of a new initiative to prevent content featuring suicide or self-harm from spreading across the social media platforms, Meta said Thursday in a blog post. Under Thrive, Meta will identify content that features suicidal themes or self-harm and flag that content to TikTok and Snapchat so they can also investigate if the same or similar content has been posted to those apps. When content featuring suicide or self-harm is identified on a Meta platform, it will be assigned a number known as a “hash,” according to the spokesperson. Social media platforms, including Meta, TikTok and Snapchat, have long been criticized for not doing more to moderate content that teens consume, including video and images of self-harm. Covid lockdowns, such as school closures, canceled sports activities and stay-at-home orders, prematurely aged teen brains by as much as four years, researchers from the University of Washington found. Lead researcher Patricia Kuhl, co-director of I-LABS, said that after Covid lockdowns began in 2020, they couldn’t do brain scan follow-ups until 2021. Pandemic lockdowns resulted in unusually accelerated brain maturation in adolescents. The research doesn’t prove the lockdowns caused the brain changes — mental health disorders were rising among children even before Covid. Medicare doesn’t cover the drugs when prescribed for weight loss, and many state Medicaid plans heavily restrict coverage. Online scamsSome websites purporting to be online pharmacies take consumers’ money but never deliver the medications, according to the study.
