The surging floodwaters from Hurricane Milton poured in through the windows late Wednesday and their refrigerator slowly floated away. Even after floodwaters subside, the stress and anxiety can lead to lingering mental health challenges. Storms can exacerbate existing mental health problems or lead to new ones. Concerns about the mental health effects of back-to-back disasters come as researchers predict more frequent extreme weather events. But research suggests the hurricanes will make people more vulnerable to mental health problems and likely make it harder for them to recover, she said.

CNN —There wasn’t much more than piles of debris from shattered homes when Vickie Ward returned Friday to her Grove City, Florida, neighborhood after Hurricane Milton. Vickie Ward said her home in Grove City, Florida, was damaged by hurricanes Helene and Milton. Her home in North Port, Florida, has been damaged multiple times by storms and she had just finished paying off repairs from Hurricane Ian in 2022. “To be honest with you, I don’t want to … It’s my fourth hurricane and four times I’ve gotten demolished. Sheriff’s deputies took them back to their home on an airboat after their neighborhood flooded by storm surge from Hurricane Milton and the Alafia River overbank flow.

As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Tampa Bay, some residents are saying that the resources needed to evacuate — especially gasoline — are in short supply, despite a mandate to leave the area. Debris from Helene also poses a risk as Milton approaches because the objects can turn into dangerous projectiles. On social media, lines stretching around the block could be seen at the few gas stations in the greater Tampa Bay area that still had fuel. Hurricane Helene had already damaged her family home and she assumes more, if not total damage, will be wrought by Milton. “What’s really sad is seeing people pulling up to gas stations and just staring at pumps that are out of gas,” she said.

Hurricane Helene displaced alligators, turtles, and other wildlife in Florida. AdvertisementFlorida's alligators, turtles, and even sharks are finding themselves in new territory in the wake of Hurricane Helene. While people should be cautious, Claerbout said the FWC hasn't received any reports of alligator bites since Helene made landfall. However, ahead of Hurricane Helene, one Florida gator strolled around the Lakeland neighborhood, northeast of Tampa, and "got bold" enough to walk up to a house's front door, The Miami Herald reported. Alligators weren't the only wildlife affected by Hurricane Helene's floodsAfter Hurricane Helene, a manatee was stranded at MacDill Air Force Base, and the Fish and Wildlife rescuers helped relocate it.

The teen faces charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and violation of a no-contact order, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities also learned the teen claimed self-defense after fatally shooting his father on Valentine's Day last year in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, Judd said. He was accused of assaulting her in November and arrested, Judd said. The teen claimed self-defense, Judd said, but the grandmother disputed the teen's account and he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence battery, the sheriff's office said. Robert Shiver’s bill for his homeowner insurance jumped from $3,800 in 2022 to $8,000 in July. Mr. Shiver, 40, who lives about 20 miles east of Tampa, Fla., did not pay the bill. Instead, he worked with his insurance agent to shave off parts of his coverage, lowering the estimate for how much the insurer would have to pay to potentially rebuild his house from around $710,000 to about $560,000. Shrinking the coverage lowered his bill to just under $5,000, a huge relief, he said, since he would again be able to make his monthly mortgage and insurance payment. In the insurance business, Mr. Shiver might now be considered “underinsured,” meaning that his policy may not be sufficient to cover a rebuild after catastrophic losses.

BRANDON, Fla. (AP) — Two Florida sheriff's deputies remained hospitalized Friday after surgeries for injuries they suffered when a man intentionally plowed into them with his speeding car, authorities said. When the deputies arrived, Bouzy took off in his car and then quickly raced back down the residential street and struck them, Chronister said. Political Cartoons View All 1240 ImagesBouzy is charged with attempted murder of law enforcement officers and will remain in custody until at least Wednesday when a bail hearing is scheduled, a judge ruled Friday. In one 2017 case, authorities said Bouzy punched a deputy in the face while being arrested for a hit-and-run accident. He said in the back of the patrol car at the time that he “hated law enforcement and that he was going to kill a deputy sheriff,” Chronister said.

By late Tuesday night, tropical storm-force winds generated by Ian extended through the Florida Keys island chain to the southernmost shores of the state's Gulf Coast, the NHC said. U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Deanne Criswell said she worried that too few Florida residents were taking the threat seriously. 1/6 A hurricane evacuation route sign is displayed as Hurricane Ian spins toward the state carrying high winds, torrential rains and a powerful storm surge, in Punta Gorda, Florida, U.S. September 27, 2022. If Ian strikes the Tampa area, it would be the first hurricane to make landfall there since the 1921 Tarpon Springs storm. But officials said Hurricane Ian had proven too much, knocking out power even in far eastern Cuba, which was largely unaffected by the storm.
Local residents fill sandbags, as Hurricane Ian spun toward the state carrying high winds, torrential rains and a powerful storm surge, at Ben T. Davis Beach in Tampa, Florida, U.S., September 26, 2022. Before heading to Florida, Hurricane Ian slammed into Cuba, forcing evacuations, cutting power to hundreds of thousands of people and swamping fishing villages. A Category 3 storm features maximum sustained winds of up to 129 miles per hour (208 km per hour). "I wasn't particularly scared until I saw the storm track this morning," Martino, 78, said as she prepared to go to her son's house north of Tampa. If Ian strikes Tampa, it would be the first hurricane to make landfall in the area since the Tarpon Springs storm in 1921.
A man runs by a boarded up storefront, as Hurricane Ian spins toward the state carrying high winds, torrential rains and a powerful storm surge, in the downtown area of Tampa, Florida, U.S., September 27, 2022. The latest 8 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT) hurricane advisory put Ian's top winds at 120 mph (195 km per hour). Ian was most likely to come ashore south of Tampa near Sarasota, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. Parts of central Florida could see as much of 2 feet (0.6 meter) of rain from Ian, according to the National Weather Service. If Ian strikes Tampa, it would be the first hurricane to make landfall in the area since the Tarpon Springs storm in 1921.
Tropical storm Ian strengthened into a hurricane Monday as Florida prepared for possible floods this week. "Ian will then emerge over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday, and pass west of the Florida Keys late Tuesday, and approach the west coast of Florida on Wednesday," it said. Earlier, the NHC had warned of the possibility of “considerable flooding impacts” later this week in west central Florida. In photos captured Sunday, residents in Tampa, Florida, could be seen filling sandbags to help prevent against flooding ahead of the storm. "Life-threatening" storm surge and hurricane-force winds are also expected to hit parts of western Cuba starting late Monday, with Ian expected to be at or near major hurricane strength by the time it nears western Cuba.
