I was in the White House before. The Bidens have similarly spent significant time at the family’s Delaware homes, though the White House has been both Joe and Jill Biden’s primary residence on weekdays for the past four years. I don’t feel that way,” Melania Trump told Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt last month. The prospect of a first lady declining to live full time at the White House offers a remarkable break in precedent but should not be surprising to those who have long observed Melania Trump. In this May 2018 photo, Melania Trump arrives during a "Be Best" initiative event in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, DC.

Washington CNN —Melania Trump is not expected to attend the traditional White House meeting with first lady Jill Biden, sources familiar with her plans said. The two are set to meet Wednesday at 11 a.m., according to the White House. There was discussion about encouraging Melania Trump to come to Washington for the meeting, as some members of the president-elect’s team felt it was important. Aside from 2020, it has been tradition for the current first lady to host the incoming first lady at the White House. In 2016, then-first lady Michelle Obama hosted Melania Trump for tea in the White House’s Yellow Oval Room and took her on a tour of the private residence.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump will meet with President Joe Biden in the Oval Office on Wednesday, the White House announced Saturday. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that the two would meet at 11 a.m. at Biden’s invitation, adding that additional details about the meeting will be released. Incoming first lady Melania Trump has also been invited to the White House to meet with first lady Jill Biden, an official in the East Wing told CNN, though it is unclear when that might happen. Trump did not host Biden in 2020, however, as he fought the election results based on falsehoods about voter fraud. CNN —Confronted with a barrage of negative social media posts from former President Donald Trump aimed at his wife, second gentleman Doug Emhoff eschewed machismo or defensiveness. “That’s all he got?” he said Tuesday of the attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris, the new and historic presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. And Monday, he leaned into a cheerleader role as he introduced the vice president at her Wilmington, Delaware, campaign headquarters. So I think that gives you a fairly good indication of if he now would move into a precedent-setting first gentleman role,” McBride said. “This first gentleman role is being a supportive spouse and understanding better than anyone the administration’s goals and how to go about best achieving that,” she said.

CNN —Buckingham Palace’s famous balcony room, where the monarch and other members of the royal family gather on special occasions before waving at cheering crowds in the streets below, is opening to the public for the first time. Final preparations are made in the Centre Room on July 8, where members of Royal Collection Trust staff tend to a chandelier. Victoria and Prince Albert were the first royals to use Buckingham Palace as a family home, following their marriage in 1840. The East Wing was built shortly after, between 1847 and 1849, to accommodate their growing family. Today, Buckingham Palace is mainly used for official meetings and events.

The White House will lean into the full pomp and circumstance of a state visit as the president seeks to emphasize the strong alliance between the two countries. The Bidens welcomed the prime minister and his wife to the White House on Tuesday evening, hosting the couple for a casual dinner at BlackSalt, a local seafood restaurant. The White House will serve wines from the Willamette Valley and Columbia Valley in the Pacific Northwest. The Bidens presented their counterparts with a three-legged black walnut table handmade by a Japanese American owned company in Pennsylvania, the White House said. The “bounty of spring” will be the theme of President Biden’s state dinner for Japan on Wednesday evening, an event that will feature decorations of cherry blossoms and peonies and conclude with a performance by Paul Simon. Jill Biden, the first lady, and the White House social secretary, Carlos Elizondo, previewed the menu and the décor ahead of the dinner for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan and his wife. It will be the fifth state dinner of Mr. Biden’s term. The guests will enter the East Wing to a wall of oversized fans that spill onto the floor, a piece of art and a metaphor with “the small end representing the beginning of life, and each pleat the many paths our lives can take,” Mr. Elizondo said.

Some two decades after leaving the White House, Rosalynn Carter reflected on the criticism she generated for expanding the role of a first lady. “The first lady role has changed,” she observed. Mrs. Carter pushed the boundaries that had constrained most of her predecessors. Nancy Reagan recalled in her memoir a “chill in her manner” when Mrs. Carter showed her around the White House following the 1980 election when Ronald Reagan defeated Mr. Carter. Dr. Biden “isn’t an activist first lady” in the way that Mrs. Carter was, said Mr. LaRosa, the former aide to the current first lady.

Mrs. Carter had the canny instincts to know that a player who courts influence requires a court. Mrs. Carter’s charismatic press secretary, Mary Hoyt, led the fight for decent East Wing salaries, despite stiff opposition. President Carter was demanding sacrifice from all Americans and turning down the heat in the White House to cut costs. Feminists like Gloria Steinem faulted Mrs. Carter for not being sufficiently outré in her activism. “She creates neither love nor hate.”Neither America nor Washington was quite ready for Mrs. Carter at the time.

“I was in all the states,” Rosalynn Carter told the AP. At The Carter Center, she launched a fellowship for journalists to pursue better coverage of mental health issues. Years later, Rosalynn and Jimmy would quietly support integration — and call for it more vocally at Plains Baptist Church. Ruth Carter later engineered a date between her brother and Rosalynn during one of his trips home from the U.S. But the void would not begin to close until the former president conceived The Carter Center.

This week, Mr. Biden is steering American involvement in two overseas wars and monitoring the continuing calamity of a speakerless House of Representatives, and there is another government shutdown crisis looming next month. John F. Kirby, a White House spokesman, played down the idea that global crises could distract Mr. Biden from his visitor, or perhaps even keep him waiting. During Mr. Biden and Mr. Albanese’s time together, which includes a news conference scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, they are expected to emphasize their shared interests. Jean-Pierre said West Wing tours took place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The discovery led to a brief closure of the White House complex on Sunday.

Trump, who faces multiple investigations and a federal indictment, is running for re-election in 2024. McCarthy, who backs the effort to expunge Trump's record, has also leveled an impeachment threat against another Biden Cabinet member, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, over the administration's immigration policies. Hardline Republican conservative Representative Lauren Boebert tried to force the House to vote to impeach Biden over immigration and border security last week. Jill Biden is now “all in” on the idea, according to a person who works with the East Wing. Recent polling, however, suggests a large swath of the Democratic Party may not be eager to see the president run again. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden arrive with Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff for a bill signing ceremony for the Respect for Marriage Act on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, on the South Lawn of the White House. “[Jill Biden] is the one more aware of how the last few years have affected Joe [Biden,]” noted a person with ties to the Biden family. Jill Biden is also the tender of Joe Biden’s legacy.

WASHINGTON — Whenever his aides are pressed about President Joe Biden’s political future, they’ll often point to one person as the true decider: his wife of 45 years, Jill Biden. Eager to introduce herself to Gina McCarthy, then the president’s chief climate adviser, she gathered some flowers from a White House garden and brought them to her office, according to White House aides. When the realization of her new security restrictions sunk in, Jill Biden told her staff she didn’t want to become isolated. Journeys outside the protective cocoon of the White House expose her to the vitriol coursing through the nation’s politics. “I don’t pay attention because I just don’t want to hear it,” Jill Biden said.
