CNN —Koalas are normally found in eucalyptus trees, but one couple came home in Australia on Wednesday and were shocked to find one in their bedroom. “I was scared, happy and excited at the same time,” Fran Dias Rufino told CNN from Adelaide in South Australia. Francielle Dias RufinoVideo showed the koala sitting on the floor beside their bed, staring at Rufino and her husband, Brunno, before climbing onto a bedside table. In South Australia, where the Rufinos live, koala numbers are stable, and in some areas, populations are so healthy they’re being managed to protect the habitat. Video showed the koala scurrying around the house, presumably looking for a way out, as Rufino screamed frantically in the background.

Although primarily interested in the homes' hurricane-resistant properties, Tener said he was also drawn to their panoramic views. A Deltec house on the hurricane-prone Tampa Bay in St Petersburg, Florida. But Linton believes only one of the approximately 3,000 Deltec homes built after the mid-1990s has ever suffered structural damage — during Hurricane Irma in 2017. Deltec says it also sells homes in areas not known for hurricanes, like this one on Lake Superior in Michigan. SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea is getting ready to blow up roads that cross the heavily militarized border with South Korea, Seoul said Monday, amid an escalating war of words after the North accused its rival of sending drones over its capital, Pyongyang. North Korea on Friday accused South Korea of sending drones to scatter a “huge number” of anti-North leaflets over Pyongyang, in what it called political and military provocation that could lead to armed conflict. The North Korean army said last week that it would completely cut roads and railways connected to South Korea and fortify the areas on its side of the border, KCNA reported. North Korea over the weekend warned of a “horrible disaster” if South Korean drones were again found to be flying over Pyongyang. South Korea has sought to strengthen its anti-drone defenses since 2022, Lee said, when five North Korean drones entered its airspace and flew over the capital, Seoul, for several hours.

The Summary Hurricane Milton intensified at one of the fastest rates in recorded history. At nearly every turn, Hurricane Milton has offered surprises. Milton is the strongest Gulf of Mexico hurricane since Hurricane Rita in 2005. However, Lin said, “that doesn’t make it any less dangerous.”Even with slower winds, Milton is expected to remain a major hurricane until landfall Wednesday night. “That would tie 2024 with 2005 and 2020 for 2nd most Gulf hurricane landfalls on record, trailing only 1886,” meteorologist Philip Klotzbach wrote on X.

Every workday, on his early-morning drive to his job overseeing a warehouse in northern New Jersey, Sean Murphy takes in the frenetic scene of the busiest port on the East Coast. Towering cranes lift shipping containers off vessels newly arrived at Newark from points around the globe. Mile-long freight trains pull cargo to and from the docks. Belching trucks clatter down the highway, hauling containers to distribution centers from Maine to Florida. Here was a visual encapsulation of the challenge confronting the global economy: cargo marooned, commerce frozen and no clarity on when normalcy will return.

Einride plans to open many EV charging stations for freight trucking on the West and East coasts, though California is the only state in which there are any EV freight charging stations of scale today. Voltera, which develops, owns and operates EV infrastructure, said the site was permitted, built, electrified and operational in under 18 months. "In the world of charging infrastructure, that's pretty remarkable," its CEO Matt Horton said in a statement. One of the first EV charging stations of scale for freight trucks is opening near the major ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, as the trucking market takes some limited, but significant steps to build the infrastructure required for a long-term transition to EV trucking and net-zero shipping. Additional EV charging projects at ports in New York and New Jersey, as well as the Pacific Northwest, are planned.

A new accounting shows that at least 523 institutions were part of the sprawling network of boarding schools for Native American children. ‘War Against the Children’ The Native American boarding school system — a decades-long effort to assimilate Indigenous people before they ever reached adulthood — robbed children of their culture, family bonds and sometimes their lives. “The government was not done with war, so the next phase involved war against the children,” said Mr. Sherman, 83, a former aerospace engineer. Now 76, his voice grows shaky when he recounts the punishments children received — and how children were turned into punishers. Library of Congress, Chronicling AmericaA precise accounting of how many children died at Native American boarding schools remains elusive.

The "slow and go" pace of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union workforce at West Coast ports has slowed ground port productivity to a crawl. "Our data shows that vessels will continue arriving at West Coast ports in the coming days with significant amounts of cargo to unload," said Kyle Henderson, CEO of Vizion. Truck and container backupsThe average truck turns to go in and out of the West Coast ports are up. West Coast ports, which had lost significant volume to East Coast ports over the past year due to volatility in the labor contract talks, had in recent months begun to gain back volume. Recent Panama Canal low water levels limited cargo throughput, and soon after that, large parts of U.S. West Coast ports stopped handling inbound and outbound container trade.

New York CNN —The Writers Guild of America is set to hold a strike authorization vote on Tuesday. “The studios need to respond to the crisis writers face,” WGA leadership said in a message to members ahead of the vote. The last writers’ strike was in 2007 and lasted 100 days, bringing Hollywood production to a screeching halt. The WGA-AMPTP negotiation is the first of three contract negotiations with entertainment unions. The Screen Actors Guild contract also expires June 30.
Total thermal coal imports through March soared 81% from the same period a year ago to 65.7 million tonnes, according to ship-tracking data from Kpler. SOUTHERN SURGEPorts feeding China's south coast saw the largest year-over-year increase in thermal coal imports. China's coal imports hit new highs in Q1 2023While China as a whole uses domestic coal production for over 90% of its coal needs, most of Southern China's coal-fired power plants rely overwhelmingly on imports. The region imported over 106 million tonnes in 2021, indicating a quarterly pace in excess of 25 million tonnes can be maintained if power needs dictate. In combination, all of China's main economic hubs are on track to steer the country's thermal coal imports to new heights in 2023, reversing the slump seen in China's coal use in 2022.
North Korea Shoots Off About 130 Artillery Shells
  + stars: | 2022-12-05 | by ( Dasl Yoon | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
SEOUL—North Korea fired about 130 artillery shells off its west and east coasts on Monday, as the U.S. and its allies pressure the Kim regime to abandon its weapons programs. The artillery shells were fired at around 2:59 p.m. from Kumgang county, which lies north of the heavily fortified demilitarized zone, and Jangsan Cape located on the country’s west coast, the military in Seoul said. The artillery firings involved multiple rocket launchers and splashed into the maritime buffer zones north of the Northern Limit Line, a disputed inter-Korean maritime border.
SEOUL, Nov 30 (Reuters) - South Korea's military said it scrambled fighter jets as two Chinese and six Russian warplanes entered its air defence zone on Wednesday. The planes did not violate South Korea's airspace, it said. An air defence zone is an area where countries demand that foreign aircraft take special steps to identify themselves. Unlike a country's airspace - the air above its territory and territorial waters - there are no international rules governing air defence zones. Moscow does not recognise Korea's air defence zone.
