You may have noticed how desperate some politicians' fundraising appeals can sound. AdvertisementIf you're a person who's at all involved in politics, from the most seasoned operative to the casual observer, you're undoubtedly familiar — and perhaps a bit annoyed — with the desperate fundraising appeals uttered in the voice of politicians. AdvertisementWe weren’t quite able to reach our most recent re-election campaign fundraising goal. If the candidate is inspiring to voters on their own, there's less need to scare people into sending them money. "There's an assumption that the more desperate the appeals become the better the fundraising works," Pennington said.

A pipeline that moves methane gas from the Frank R. Bowerman landfill to an onsite power plant is shown in Irvine, California, California, U.S., June 15, 2021. The philanthropies, which include the Bezos Earth Fund, Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Sequoia Climate Foundation, will help accelerate the phase-down of methane emissions and other non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gases. That means that reining in methane emissions can have a more immediate impact in limiting climate change. Research firm Kayrros, which tracks methane emissions, said on Friday that despite the pledge, emissions of methane are not coming down, and in some places, they are even going up. Rapid cuts in methane emissions from fossil fuels could lead to a reduction of 0.1°C in global temperature rise by mid-century," said Antoine Rostand, CEO of Kayrros.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' fund to support homeless families announced $117 million in new grants on Tuesday to organizations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, which is a part of a $2 billion commitment Bezos made in 2018 to support homeless families and to run free preschools. That brings the amount granted by the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund to benefit homeless families to almost $640 million. The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte received a second grant this year after first being awarded $5 million by the fund in 2018. The Bezos Day 1 Families Fund did not give a timeframe for when the pledged $2 billion would be distributed or what portion would go to homeless families. Last year, Bezos gave away $122.2 million and has pledged around $12.8 billion in charitable donations, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Published Tuesday, the "State of Climate Action 2023" paints a sobering picture of the challenges that policymakers face as they gear up for the COP28 climate change summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates at the end of November. Tuesday's report takes that 1.5 degrees goal and develops targets for 2030 and 2050 that align with it. The U.N. has previously noted that 1.5 degrees Celsius is viewed as being "the upper limit" when it comes to avoiding the worst consequences of climate change. "Despite decades of dire warnings and wake-up calls, our leaders have largely failed to mobilize climate action anywhere near the pace and scale needed," Boehm added. Nationally Determined Contributions, or NDCs, refer to individual countries' targets for cutting emissions and adapting to the effects of climate change.

The world is off track in its efforts to curb global warming in 41 of 42 important measurements and is even heading in the wrong direction in six crucial ways, a new international report calculates. On the flip side, public money spent to create more fossil fuel use is going in the wrong direction and faster than it has in the past, said study co-author Kelly Levin, science and data director at the Bezos Earth Fund. The globe has already warmed about 1.2 degrees Celsius (2.2 degrees Fahrenheit) since the mid 19th century. Jeff Bezos, who founded Amazon out of his Seattle garage in 1994, is leaving the city and moving to Miami to be near his parents and his space company Blue Origin. It was there that Bezos in 1995 launched Amazon as an online bookseller, before transforming the company into a retail and cloud computing giant. "I've lived in Seattle longer than I've lived anywhere else and have so many amazing memories here," Bezos wrote. Amazon's rapid growth reshaped Seattle, particularly its South Lake Union area, where the company's headquarters sits. Bezos recently spent $150 million for two adjoining properties in Miami's Indian Creek Village, often referred to as the "billionaire bunker."

[1/3] U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen speaks during an interview in New York City, U.S., September 18, 2023. The Treasury released the new, voluntary principles as world leaders, celebrities and business moguls, converged on Manhattan to focus attention on the climate crisis during the U.N. General Assembly week. The nine principles aim to promote consistency, credibility and transparency across net-zero pledges by financial institutions. Among them, the Treasury prescribed that financial institutions should practice "transition finance" that can support decarbonization in high-emitting sectors that are difficult to abate. DATA RESEARCH FUNDINGThe Treasury also announced that several philanthropic groups have pledged $340 million to help develop research, data and technical resources intended to help financial institutions develop and execute "robust, voluntary net-zero commitments."

“There’s a lot of climate exaggeration,” said Gates, who founded Microsoft and is now a philanthropist. Some financial institutions could supplement emissions reduction measures with the voluntary purchase of carbon credits, according to a handout. She said the goal is to affirm “the importance of credible net-zero commitments and to encourage financial institutions that make them to take consistent approaches to implementation." Yellen also announced that a group of philanthropic organizations – including Bezos Earth Fund, Bloomberg Philanthropies and others – would pledge $340 million to help financial institutions “develop and execute robust, voluntary net-zero commitments,” she said. A view of the United Nations Climate Change Conference flags at the venue, in Bonn, Germany, June 6, 2023. "What we want to see, all of us, is a real sense of urgency about reducing CO2 emissions," Roche Vice-Chair Andre Hoffmann said. We need to show action, and I'm not sure that what I've read so far of the COP28 will be strong enough for that." Despite rapidly falling prices for renewable energy, Roche's (ROG.S) Hoffmann said much faster action was needed. Investment giant BlackRock has been planning for CEO Larry Fink's succession for years. Leadership has discussed BlackRock cofounder Susan Wagner as someone who could succeed Fink if the board does not have a clear candidate. For years, BlackRock has been planning for Chief Executive Larry Fink's succession, a torch-passing the industry has long speculated over. Many Companies Are Shying Away From Carbon Credits

Many companies are hesitant to buy carbon credits as the market faces criticism and coming standards remain unclear. Carbon credits are also expected to be discussed at this week’s World Economic Forum annual summit in Davos, Switzerland. As officials work to develop the market, sustainability chiefs must weigh the pros and cons of carbon credits in their climate plans. Carbon solutionsTo address concerns in the carbon market and scale up climate action, there is a movement toward better, widely accepted standards. The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market ended its public comment period in September on the 10 so-called Core Carbon Principles it proposed in July.
ABU DHABI, Jan 15 (Reuters) - U.S. climate envoy John Kerry on Sunday outlined core principles for a "high-integrity" carbon offset plan meant to help developing nations speed their energy transition, and next steps including establishing a consultative group. The Energy Transition Accelerator (ETA), first announced at last year's COP27 climate conference, is being developed by the United States with the Bezos Earth Fund and the Rockefeller Foundation to mobilise private capital. "We believe you can have high-integrity, accountable, transparent credit which will help us to be able to put some money on the table," he said, acknowledging widespread criticism of voluntary carbon offset schemes. He said ETA principles also called for a near-term, inclusive and comprehensive approach to deliver on broader sustainable development goals and support power sector-wide energy transition. New York CNN Business —BlocPower, a Brooklyn-based clean energy company, is bringing eco-friendly, all-electric heating and cooling systems to older buildings in lower income communities, with the goal of reducing carbon footprints and energy bills. By replacing dated equipment like gas powered furnaces with heat pump systems, the company says it is able to dramatically change a building’s environmental footprint. Building owners that have turned to BlocPower say they see a real difference. BlocPower lowered bills, made the energy system quieter, cleaned the air and offered cooling solutions that tenants are thrilled with. “What needs to happen now is we need to shift gears and move the entire infrastructure of energy systems and buildings away from fossil fuels to clean energy,” said Baird.
