Oracle announces new AI-powered electronic health record
  + stars: | 2024-10-29 | by ( Ashley Capoot | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
Oracle's new offering could help boost its position within the fiercely competitive EHR market, where it has struggled to maintain its footing in recent years. It's almost like having your own resident," Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager of Oracle Health and Life Sciences, told CNBC in an interview. Ideally, this will allow doctors to spend less time searching through records and more time caring for patients, Oracle said. An electronic health record, or an EHR, is a digital version of a patient's medical history that's updated by doctors and nurses over time. The new EHR has been in the works since Oracle acquired Cerner, but it was not built on top of Cerner's existing infrastructure, Verma said.

Oracle on Monday announced it intends to join a new federally-backed medical network that will make it easier for clinics, hospitals and insurance companies to share patients' data. Oracle, which acquired the medical records giant Cerner for $28 billion in 2022, is the latest major vendor to support TEFCA, joining its chief rival Epic Systems. Oracle needs to be approved to join TEFCA, but its interest in doing so helps to bolster the nascent network's credibility. "This is just a natural next step," Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager of Oracle Health and Life Sciences, told CNBC in an interview. The main groups that participate in health-data exchanges through TEFCA are called qualified health information networks, or QHINs.

Wegovy, the blockbuster weight loss treatment from Novo Nordisk , tops the list of drugs that could soon become part of the second round of price negotiations between manufacturers and Medicare. The Biden administration last month announced new negotiated prices for the first 10 Medicare Part D drugs selected for the talks. He also pushed back on Medicare price negotiations when asked about the potential selection of Wegovy and Ozempic, calling the talks "price-setting" that will have negative consequences for drug innovation. Medicare Part D doesn't cover weight loss treatments unless they are approved and prescribed for another health condition. We'll be following the next round of Medicare drug price negotiations closely, so stay tuned for our coverage.

Epic is a health-care software giant whose technology is used in thousands of U.S. hospitals and clinics. And one theme stood out during the health-care company's event on Tuesday: How new artificial intelligence features can help doctors and patients. Faulkner said the company has more than 100 AI features in the works, though many of the tools are still in the early stages of development. Doctors will be able to use AI to automatically queue up orders for prescriptions and labs, the company said. He spoke to an AI agent through the MyChart app about his recovery after a supposed wrist surgery and answered questions about his pain.

Your health records are coming to new apps. Here's why

It's about to get a lot easier for patients in the U.S. to access their own medical records. Health-care software vendor Epic Systems on Thursday announced that individuals will be able to securely release their health data to different apps they choose to use, meaning they will have more direct control over their medical information than ever before. For instance, if patients are using a health coaching app or an app that reminds them to take their medicine, they can choose to import their records directly into those platforms. It launched in December, and aims to iron out both the legal and technical requirements for sharing patients' data at scale. If one person uses Verizon as their phone carrier, a second person uses AT&T and a third person uses T-Mobile, they are all still able to call and text one another.

Particle Health said on Monday that the "vast majority" of its customers are still receiving records from medical software giant Epic Systems despite an ongoing dispute between the two companies over data-sharing practices. Epic's software supports more than 300 million patient records, and Particle acts like a middleman that helps health-care organizations access the data they need. Particle said in a release Monday that while Epic "indiscriminately stopped responding" to data requests from some of its customers because of the dispute, most clients were not affected. "While there is an ongoing dispute between Epic and Particle Health, related to three specific customers, the significant majority of Particle Health customers impacted by Epic's actions were not in any way related to this dispute," the company said in the release. Particle CEO Jason Prestinario said in the statement that the company will address the dispute with Epic through official procedural channels.

Epic Systems, the largest provider of software for managing medical records, says a venture-backed startup called Particle Health is using patient data in unauthorized and unethical ways that have nothing to do with treatment. Epic told customers in a notice on Thursday that it cut off its connection to Particle, hindering the company's ability to tap a system with more than 300 million patient records. Particle is one of several companies that acts as a sort of middleman between Epic and the organizations — typically hospitals and clinics — that need the data. Patient data is inherently sensitive and valuable, and it's protected by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, a federal law that requires a patient's consent or knowledge for third-party access. To join the network, organizations are vetted and have to agree to abide by clear "Permitted Purposes" for the exchange of patient data.

Prenosis' tool, called Sepsis ImmunoScore, uses 22 different parameters like temperature, heart rate and cell counts to help clinicians assess a patient's risk of sepsis, the company told CNBC. While Prenosis is the first company to receive FDA approval for its AI diagnostic tool for sepsis, several organizations have built and released similar solutions. Epic's sepsis model is used in hundreds of hospitals across the U.S., according to a 2021 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. Even so, Epic reportedly overhauled its sepsis model the following year in an attempt to improve its performance, according to Stat News. Prenosis said it worked to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of Sepsis ImmunoScore to the FDA for around 18 months.

Highmark Health announced Monday that it's integrating technology from Google Cloud and the health-care software company Epic Systems to try to improve data gathering for providers and payers. Highmark, headquartered in Pittsburgh, is the parent company of a health plan with 7 million members, a provider network of 14 hospitals and several other entities. "Doctors don't need help once they have information; the problem is they don't have it," Farah told CNBC in an interview. Highmark said its new integration will also help it aggregate clinical data from its hospitals that representatives from its health plan need to access. The technology can automatically notify the health plan about upcoming patient visits, for instance.
