The family of a 30-year-old Hawaii resident is searching for her in Los Angeles after she missed a connecting flight, sent unusual text messages and then went silent, the relatives said. The next day, she sent concerning text messages to loved ones, family members said. The three were part of a larger group of family members and loved ones who gathered in Los Angeles in recent days to launch a search effort. Family members said they couldn't speak about it in detail because they don't want to hinder investigators. The group gathered in Los Angeles is focusing its own search on the intersection of Pico Boulevard and Hill Street, near the Convention Center, LA Live and Crypto Arena, family members said.

Police stand guard outside the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts building before the sentencing against the 45 convicted pro-democracy activists charged under the national security law, in Hong Kong, China November 19, 2024. Hong Kong's High Court on Tuesday jailed 45 pro-democracy activists for up to 10 years following a landmark national security trial that has damaged the city's once feisty democracy movement and drawn criticism from the U.S. and other countries. A total of 47 pro-democracy activists were arrested and charged in 2021 with conspiracy to commit subversion under a Beijing-imposed national security law and had faced sentences of up to life in prison. The Chinese and Hong Kong governments say the national security laws were necessary to restore order after mass pro-democracy protests in 2019, and the democrats have been treated in accordance with local laws. Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong said she was "gravely concerned" about the sentence, and called on China to "cease suppression of freedoms of expression, assembly, media and civil society," in Hong Kong.

The couple raised their two daughters in five cities across four continents before deciding to settle in Minnesota. AdvertisementIn Minnesota, new kids rarely show up, and when they do, they're usually coming from nearby. My family moved to Minnesota in July, and it's taking time for my two daughters and me to settle down. Over the next 10 years, we had two daughters, moved five times, and lived in five cities across four continents. We are proud that our kids started their lives as global citizens and hope to continue their experience by enjoying family vacations once we have our feet firmly on the ground.

What we learned from the 2024 World Series

You’re the winner, friend, because you’ve learned something about baseball during the World Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in the 2024 World Series, four games to one. They might have played the sloppiest inning in World Series history, if not the sloppiest game in World Series history. It was certainly the sloppiest game from a World Series team facing elimination, and I’m not fact-checking that. The World Series was promoted like “Godzilla vs. Kong,” except one of the monsters got hurt before he could do anything.

For every team faced with an early demise in the World Series, that’s the vision: one more day of summer to play with your friends. “We lost Game 3 and we said, ‘Hey, who doesn’t want to make history?’ I know I love making history. Eight years ago with the Chicago Cubs, Rizzo played another Game 5 on Halloween eve, needing a win to extend the World Series. Three of them were new to this World Series and covered seven innings. He lived the fantasy of every New York-born kid of his generation: a shortstop in pinstripes, starring in the World Series.

The Dodgers got their looks against the Yankees in this series, even if there were times when they struggled to capitalize. It took the Yankees fumbling on defense in the fifth inning just to allow the Dodgers back into Game 5. An eighth-inning rally capped by sacrifice flies by second baseman Gavin Lux and outfielder Mookie Betts put the Dodgers in front. This title, the eighth in franchise history, can stand beside the Dodgers’ trophy from the pandemic-shortened season in 2020. The precedent feels preposterous until you consider the current Dodgers who will one day join them in the Hall of Fame. “Mark,” he told Freeman, “wants to win really bad.” That desire became clear to Ohtani when he met with the Dodgers. Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve had some strong words for the referees after the team lost the WNBA championship in overtime against the New York Liberty on Sunday night. "I know all the headlines will be 'Reeve cries foul' ... bring it on, because this s--- was stolen from us," Reeve said. She criticized officials for failing to call multiple fouls to the detriment of the Liberty team. "If we're getting hit, that's a foul," Brondello said. "If they foul you, embellish it because that's a foul," Brondello said in in the broadcast.

New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart kept cool in the face of pressure as she led the team to its first WNBA title with a thrilling 67-62 overtime win in the decisive fifth game of the WNBA Finals against the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday. Stewart, who tallied 13 points in the game, drained a pair of free throws in the extra session to seal the victory and the title. She said she was determined to hit the shots, especially after she missed a potential game-winning free throw in Game 1, which the Lynx won in overtime. Stewart, a two-time WNBA MVP who was also twice named WNBA Finals MVP while leading the Seattle Storm to a pair of championships before joining the Liberty, said she tried to keep things simple in that moment. Breanna Stewart shoots a free throw during overtime Sunday.
