CNN —An Illinois woman is $1 million richer after winning on a lottery ticket she forgot about. During a grocery trip to the Jewel-Osco supermarket in Elmhurst in October, she made the last-minute decision to pick up a lottery ticket for the Lucky Day Lotto, a daily draw game in Illinois. Her ticketing purchase was not only unplanned, but also eventually forgotten about, she said in an Illinois Lottery press release, requesting to remain anonymous. “I actually put the ticket in my purse and forgot all about it.”On October 20, the game announcers revealed the five winning numbers: 2-3-24-25-28. The lucky winner is the ninth Illinois Lottery player this year to win $1 million or more with Lucky Day Lotto.

Thousands of students use the 34th Avenue Open Street to get to and from school every day. Siff and others hope 34th Avenue will become a public park that prioritizes people on foot. How Much Money Did This Year’s Met Gala Raise?
  + stars: | 2024-05-07 | by ( Callie Holtermann | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
At the Met Gala on Monday, a throng of photographers fought to capture Zendaya and Kim Kardashian parading couture gowns down the red (technically, mouthwash-green) carpet. This year’s event raised about $26 million for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, according to a spokeswoman. That’s a $4 million increase over last year’s total, and more than double what the event raised a decade ago, in 2014. The most recent fall gala for the New York City Ballet raised just short of $4 million, and the American Museum of Natural History’s gala brought in $2.5 million. Even The Met’s other events do not compare: Its Art & Artists Gala raised $4.4 million last year.

The subway crime that Jimmy Sumampow had been hearing about in recent years — as well as his own experience — had already led him to make plans to leave New York City. Then, on Friday, he saw a video online of the shooting on an A train this week. “I feel I should move out for a while and see if New York takes action and gets better,” he said. For Elise Anderson, however, the shooting did not raise her level of concern. Subway crime data in recent years shows a muddled picture, and just as they have in surveys of riders and polls of residents, New Yorkers’ opinions diverge.

The Endangered Languages of New York
  + stars: | 2024-02-22 | by ( Alex Carp | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +19 min
Most people think of endangered languages as far-flung or exotic, the opposite of cosmopolitan. All told, there are more endangered languages in and around New York City than have ever existed anywhere else, says Perlin, who has spent 11 years trying to document them. She has published children’s books in Wakhi and other endangered languages of the Pamir mountains in Central Asia. By the start of the pandemic, the city had begun official outreach in nine Indigenous languages and recorded videos in several other endangered languages. We cross-referenced E.L.A.’s New York City language list with three independent databases that track the threat level of languages around the world: Ethnologue, which catalogs all known living languages in the world; UNESCO’s World Atlas of Languages, a survey of all the languages spoken in UNESCO member states; and the Endangered Languages Project, a site to which the public can contribute content, managed by the First Peoples’ Cultural Council and the Endangered Languages Catalogue (ELCat) project at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Under an elevated subway track in Queens, Victor José Hernández was whipping up the pepitos that he had perfected at a street cart in Caracas, Venezuela. Just steps away, an Ecuadorean restaurant now displays a big Venezuelan flag and offers karaoke with Venezuelan love songs. And the line for arepas and cachapas (sweet corn cakes) spills out the door of a Venezuelan cafe. Though New York City was built on immigrant neighborhoods — Chinatown, Curry Hill, Little Italy and Little Haiti, among many others — it has never had a Venezuelan neighborhood. Historically, the city’s Venezuelan population was tiny and overshadowed by much larger Hispanic groups, including Puerto Ricans and Dominicans, immigration experts said.

A man exonerated after spending over two decades in prison for murders in Queens that he did not commit will receive a $17.5 million settlement from New York City, an apparent record, according to his lawyer and city data. Mr. Bell was sentenced in 1999 to life in prison without parole. In 2021, a judge threw out the three men’s convictions and admonished prosecutors for withholding evidence that could have cast doubt on their guilt. The judge also found that prosecutors had made false statements at trial. “These three defendants were undoubtedly wronged by the district attorney’s office’s misconduct,” the judge, Joseph A. Zayas of the Appellate Division of State Supreme Court, wrote in his decision.

If it goes through, the hospital’s disappearance would leave the residents of Lower Manhattan with few major medical institutions. The largest hospital that would remain to serve that area would be NewYork-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan hospital, a small institution that has fewer than 200 beds. Most of the large hospitals serving neighborhoods that include Greenwich Village, the Lower East Side, Little Italy and Chinatown have been shuttered. That was especially the case in Queens, where years of hospital closures left the few remaining hospitals, including Elmhurst, overwhelmed. During the first deadly phase of the pandemic, Beth Israel cared for more than 1,700 Covid patients — 165 of whom died, according to state statistics.

“We’ll just have to commiserate about the Eagles’ chances this year,” Mr. Holt said. Guests were seated at long tables for dinner — burrata and branzino — topped with flowers and cans of La Croix, which was one of the event’s sponsors. The comedian and actor Mae Martin shared a table with Eriona Hysolli, a scientist who is overseeing efforts to reintroduce the extinct woolly mammoth in Siberia. “There is an inherent ranking that comes with a list, which I feel, like, is always difficult to wrap your mind around when you’re talking about art,” he said. The sport has been especially important for the community after the early weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 ravaged Corona, Elmhurst and other parts of Queens. Many were friends of Teresa Benitez and her family, longtime ecuavoley participants from Corona. “We lost maybe 200 people we knew from here, people who came here to play volleyball with us,” said Benitez, a retail worker. “It’s only a couple of weeks,” Benitez said. Back then, people played their special brand of volleyball close to the Willets Point-Shea Stadium subway station on the No.

Rep. George Santos' sister, Tiffany, once bilked the landlord of her Queens apartment out of $40,000 in rent, according to court documents. A lawyer for the landlord told Insider Thursday that she has not started making payments. Now the striking young doctors, many of whom were still in medical school in 2020, say the pandemic has encouraged activism and organizing — and a growing willingness to challenge the low pay young trainee doctors receive for working long and grueling hours. Trainee doctors who work at the city’s public hospitals have often been reluctant to rock the boat in the past. “As international residents, we’re always so thankful — we feel very lucky to be here,” said Dr. Sarah Hafuth, a leader among the resident physicians, who comes from Canada. That angered many resident physicians and hazard pay remains one of the issues driving the strike, one union delegate, a psychiatry resident, Dr. Tanathun Kajornsakchai, said on Friday. The last one in New York City, according to the Committee of Interns and Residents, the union organizing this week’s strike, was in 1990 when young doctors at a Bronx hospital went on strike for nine days.
