Democrats recalibrate on immigration after bruising defeat to TrumpBy Sahil KapurAfter the issue served as a political albatross for them in the last election, Democrats are taking steps in the early days of the new Congress to recalibrate on immigration. The bill passed the House 264-159 earlier this week, with 48 Democrats voting for it. The openness of some Democrats to supporting a bill that stalled out last year comes as the party looks for an immigration reset heading into the second Trump administration. And voters who cited immigration as a top issue backed Trump over Harris 89% to 9%, according to the exit poll. But some Democrats say they have fallen out of touch with voters on the issue and led the party astray.

Holger Rune, an enigma at this point, is the highest seed in Sinner’s quarter; Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic wouldn’t come around until a final. Aryna Sabalenka suffered the same fate as Coco Gauff, drawing a former Grand Slam champion. Draw day at the Australian Open was not a great one for American tennis fans. The 10-time Australian Open champion would then be seeded to face another Czech, Jiri Lehecka, or three-time major semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov. The prize for the winner of this little cluster of potentially lethal players is a slated fourth round against Gauff.

The Summary Lead pollution likely dropped the average IQ in ancient Rome by 2.5 to 3 points, a study found. In ancient Rome, toxic lead was so pervasive in the air that it most likely dropped the average person’s IQ by 2.5 to 3 points, new research suggests. The study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, amplifies long-standing questions about what role, if any, lead pollution played in the empire’s downfall. “Roman-era lead pollution is the earliest unambiguous example of human impacts on the environment.”The story of the ancient pollution was buried in the Greenland ice sheet. Manning said it is important to remember that ancient Rome was a tough place to survive, with life expectancies around 25 to 30 years.

In today’s edition, “Meet the Press” researcher and production associate Juhi Doshi explores how the anti-incumbent wave has extended well beyond Washington in recent months. In fact, the incumbent party lost almost every Western election in 2024. In the United Kingdom, the Conservative Party saw its 14-year rule end in its worst electoral loss since 1832. For the first time in nearly 60 years, Botswana’s Democratic Party lost control in a dramatic defeat. And in the U.S., the incumbent party lost for the third straight presidential election — the first time that has happened since the 19th century.

Tucked away in Manhattan's East Village, a sober bar offers an alternative to the rest of the boozy scenes in New York City. ADOn a Saturday night, Eliott Edge, the bar manager at Hekate Café and Elixir Lounge, welcomed patrons, telling newcomers that: "Everything — with a capital E — is alcohol-free." Edge predicted that every bar will have to have non-alcoholic options to remain competitive "because they're going to realize that it's like vegetarians or vegans or gluten-free or dairy-free. ADThough Hekate is a totally sober experience, Edge said the bar is a "shining example" of how to do it right. AD"You don't need alcohol," Edge said.

This year, instead of making resolutions , try something different — manifest the changes you want to make in your life with simple, practical steps. Resolutions tend to be vague, unrealistic, and disconnected from our deeper values, failing to create the emotional commitment needed for real change . It's a deliberate process that involves aligning your values, intentions, and actions to move toward the life you want. From there, create goals that are S.M.A.R.T. Take time to journal, visualize, or even create a vision board that reflects your values and intentions.

Mergers in the auto industry are nothing new. And he said beyond the question of technological change is the increased competition from Chinese automakers, who had previously been limited to the Chinese market. The Chinese auto industry was barely a blip on the international radar 20 years ago, as Western automakers were dominant in China, the world’s largest auto market. So Chinese automakers are already shaking up the European market and are expected to eventually capture significant market share in North America. Wells does see the potential for more consolidation, particularly among Chinese automakers.

Carter and Trump could hardly have been more different and, despite the president-elect’s gracious tribute on Sunday, swapped fierce public criticism. Trump, meanwhile, often mocked Carter on the campaign trail this year – lampooning him as the worst president in history bar one, President Joe Biden. “A Complete Unknown” probably won’t please Dylan purists or anyone, really, who’s a stickler for documentary facticity in fiction. Those admirers are bad, but Pete and the folkies can seem worse because they’re dogmatic and because, well, they’re not cool.
