Buying shares of Nvidia or other semiconductor and Big Tech stocks is just one way to play the artificial intelligence theme. There's a cheaper way to play it, Sean Peche of Ranmore Fund Management told CNBC Pro Talks last week. "Most investors over the last couple of years have thought that the only way to play AI is to own Nvidia and a few of the other peers," the portfolio manager said. AI is going to help these banks, but investors are "not paying for" the AI factor given that these stocks are trading at only six times earnings, he pointed out. Shares of Nvidia are trading at around 57 times earnings.

"Maybe that weight loss product (by United Laboratories) works, maybe it doesn't. United Laboratories' price-to-earnings of 5.8 times is a fraction of the 34.3 times that Novo Nordisk is trading at, Peche added. [United Laboratories] is making smooth progress in R & D and targets to launch Liraglutide in 2024. Their comments follow United Laboratories' "faster than expected earnings" growth in the first half of the year. Analysts' average price target on United Laboratories is 12.95 Hong Kong dollars, giving it 28.2% potential upside.

Investors should stay away from overvalued U.S. stocks in 2025, fund manager Sean Peche has cautioned. The value investor at Ranmore Fund Management told CNBC's Silvia Amaro on CNBC Pro Talks about where he sees undervalued stocks and opportunities, especially now the U.S. Federal Reserve has cut interest rates. Pesh highlighted his fund's holdings, including Carrefour , Petrobras , Alibaba , and Baidu as value plays. Peche, who set up Ranmore Fund Management in 2008, also shared some of the worst trades of the year, as well as his most successful yet. Since inception, the fund has gained 10.9% on an annualized basis, slightly more than the 10.6% posted by its MSCI benchmark.

As fears of a recession grip stock markets and consumers get squeezed, outperforming fund manager Sean Peche is betting on an unexpected retail player: the French multinational Carrefour . Peche, a portfolio manager at Ranmore Fund Management, highlighted the company's defensive nature and ability to grow earnings amid inflation as a key attractive quality. Peche noted that Carrefour has significantly increased its revenue over the past few years while maintaining stable inventory levels. The retailer's total revenue increased from 74.2 billion euros ($80.96 billion) in 2018 to 84.9 billion euros in 2023, according to FactSet data, a rise of 14.4%. In a virtual presentation to pitch his closed-end vehicle Pershing Square USA Ltd., the billionaire investor recalled discovering Buffett's writing in his early 20s and learning from the unusual career path of the "Oracle of Omaha." And that story was really the inspiration behind launching Pershing Square." The 58-year-old Ackman has mostly achieved that goal with almost 90% of Pershing's assets now in a permanent capital format . Most of its capital is in Pershing Square Holdings, a $15 billion closed-end fund that trades in Europe. So my ambition was to get to a very similar place as Warren Buffett as promptly and as practicable," Ackman said.

A cameraman takes video footage of a stock index board showing South Korea's benchmark stock index (L) after a ceremony celebrating the New Year's opening of the South Korea stock market at the Korea Exchange in Seoul on January 2, 2023. Chaebol challengeIn South Korea, most market heavyweights are corporations called "chaebols," large family-owned global conglomerates that are usually controlled by the founder's family. However, IHS Markit highlighted in June last year that in South Korea, the ex-dividend date comes before the companies' dividend announcement dates. With such challenges, should investors be putting their money into South Korea stocks — or should they stay away? "If authorities continue to improve the investment environment further, the chances for the South Korean stock index to be included in the [MSCI World Index] will grow," he said.

However, his aspirations to make UniCredit the "bank of Europe" are proving trickier to realise with the CEO setting a high bar for mergers and acquisitions in the euro zone's fractured capital markets, despite having what he describes as the biggest war chest among European lenders. UniCredit bought Greece's 9% stake in Alpha Bank (ACBr.AT) and struck a commercial partnership with the Athens-based lender, also acquiring most of its Romanian operations. The CEO works closely with a small M&A team he set up within UniCredit which constantly reviews potential deals in the markets and businesses where the bank operates, people with knowledge of the matter said. But uneven regulation across the euro zone, where progress towards a single banking market has stalled, complicates cross-border deals. Calling on Europe to follow his lead, Orcel says he has unlocked UniCredit's potential by giving it a unified strategy across its 13 markets.

Star fund manager Zhang Kun, who manages nearly 90 billion yuan for Guangzhou-based E Fund Management, has seen his flagship 56 billion yuan Blue Chip Selected Mixed Fund lose 8% so far this year. Another high profile fund manager, Ge Lan at Lombarda China Fund Management, saw her flagship 28 billion yuan healthcare fund retreat 7% in 2021 and 23% in 2022, after a nearly 100% gain in 2020. FTX customer funds were comingled with Alameda since the beginning of the exchange's inception, according to a recent CFTC complaint. When Alameda's external loans were called in, FTX customer funds were used to cover the debts. The complaint also alleges Bankman-Fried, his parents, and some employees used customer funds for personal purchases and loans. Under the direction of Bankman-Fried, FTX customer funds were further used to cover the debt. It has also become clear that the flashy ad and sports campaigns were funded by customer deposits.
Still, North Dimension had a crucial role in the FTX mess, regulators now say. In fact, they contend, the little-known company was central to the furtive misappropriation of FTX customers’ funds. But North Dimension Inc. also appears to have been a fake online electronics retailer, an NBC News investigation found. The second North Dimension website is sparse, with just two pages superimposed on a photo of a mountain range. An analysis by DomainTools shows this North Dimension site was created on Oct. 3, 2022, and registered in Ontario, Canada.
