News of an apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump has taken China’s heavily censored social media by storm, prompting conspiracy theories and a mockery of the U.S. political landscape. As the news spread to China on Monday, discussions concerning the incident were trending on the popular Chinese social media platform Weibo, with netizens pointing out how Trump had just recently escaped an attempt on his life at a campaign rally on July 13. Other outlandish conspiracy theories proliferated on the platform, mentioning religious groups. Separate from the conspiracy theories, many netizens theorized that Trump stood to benefit from the incident. In a fundraising email shortly after the incident, Trump said he was safe and in good spirits.

Japan stocks rebounded sharply on Tuesday after the Nikkei 225 and the Topix dropped over 12% in the previous session. The Bank of Japan raising rates to their highest level since 2008 on July 30 caused the yen to strengthen to a seven-month high, pressurizing stocks. Markets globally were also spooked by fears of a U.S. recession stoked by a weaker-than-expected jobs report. Real wages in Japan also grew 1.1% in June compared with a year ago, the first time that wages have risen in 26 months. Strong wage growth offers more room for the Bank of Japan to tighten its monetary policy.
