An American citizen has died at a popular adventure spot in Laos where alcohol tainted with methanol has been blamed for a spate of poisonings in recent days. The State Department said the U.S. citizen died in Vang Vieng, a town popular with backpackers to the north of the South East Asian country’s capital. Citing confidentiality, it would not comment when asked whether they died of methanol poisoning. One of South East Asia’s poorest countries, authorities in Laos have long cautioned foreign travelers about tainted drinks at nightclubs and bars. A September surprise has given bitcoin a head start on a potential run to record highs in the fourth quarter. The cryptocurrency posted a 7.7% gain for September — historically its weakest month of the year — and its best month since May. The month has become known to native crypto investors as "Uptober." … As crypto becomes increasingly correlated with traditional markets, it's expected to be another strong month." Investors expect bitcoin's price will be driven by rate cuts, more inflows into bitcoin ETFs by institutions and clarity following the election.

Former President Donald Trump repeated again and again debunked rumors related to Venezuelan gangs in a Colorado town during Tuesday night’s presidential debate. But the property management company that owns the buildings blamed a Venezuelan gang for the rundown conditions. Aurora police haven’t yet determined whether the men in the video belong to a Venezuelan gang, KUSA reported. Protesters at a City Council meeting Monday object to what they say is the politicizing and exaggeration of an alleged Venezuelan gang problem in Aurora. “Voters can avoid having their votes co-opted by falsehoods by being aware of this trend and taking a few simple steps to confirm whether the claims they’re seeing are true.”

Ether, the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap, is nearly 50% off its all-time high. The ETH/BTC ratio, a sentiment indicator reflecting the relative value of ether compared with bitcoin, is at its lowest level since April 2021. "Bitcoin has a very well established use case, which is a store-of-value currency," said Julio Moreno, head of research at CryptoQuant. Some investors had hoped ether could compete with bitcoin, whose rate of supply growth slows every four years after the halving. However, ether supply has been rising at a fast pace this year, and is on track to resume its pre-Merge levels in the next three months, according to CryptoQuant.

Investors have several reasons to be optimistic toward bitcoin even as it enters one of the sleepiest trading months of the year. It has finished seven of the past 11 Augusts in the red, generating an average 2.69% return for the month, according to CoinGlass, largely due to a more than 65% gain in August 2017. "It's very likely that's going to continue playing a part here" in the month ahead, Duong said. Pandl at Grayscale is upbeat on the prospect of bitcoin reaching another all-time high sometime this year, and ether retesting $4,000. "Equity markets have wobbled but, so far, bitcoin has performed well, trading more like a hedge against dollar weakness," Pandl said.

The police officers asked the man what he meant when he said that involving an Australian government minister in a charity event could benefit “us Chinese.” Was he talking about mainland China and the Chinese Communist Party, or the local Australian Chinese community? Depending on the answer, he faced up to 10 years in prison. “You are understanding the Chinese is China. So why would he not get into trouble with the authorities? He believed that it would be embarrassing for Australia to accuse of him of spying because he had been an active member of a major political party. Less than two years later, in 2020, he became the first person to be charged under Australia’s broad foreign interference laws. He was among the hundreds of thousands of ethnic Chinese who fled that country in the 1970s. He settled in Australia and grew a business making tombstones, secured a middle-class life and got enmeshed in local Chinese community groups.

Earlier, it rose to as much as $65,658.10, its highest level since November 2021. The price of bitcoin rose to start the week, edging even closer to its all-time high after the rally took a breather over the weekend. "What we're seeing today ... might well be a rerun of early last week when bitcoin surged $10,000 in the space of a couple of days. Investors have been extra eager to see bitcoin approach its all-time high. Nevertheless, long-term investors are confident that the combination of increasing demand for bitcoin through the new U.S. exchange-traded funds and a tighter supply expected after the April halving event will push the price of bitcoin to a new all-time high.

With bitcoin on a hot streak this past week, investors should brace themselves for a cooling in March. "But cash inflows into spot bitcoin ETFs are accelerating, and that seems to have been overpowering those technical signals." Although Bitcoin traded above $62,000 to end the week, it's realized price was down at the $42,000 level, according to CryptoQuant. CryptoQuant also showed the cost of opening new long positions in the futures market spiked in the recent rally, which historically signals a coming correction in the bitcoin price. Ether, however, has ended the month higher in six of the last eight March's since its inception, with an average gain on the month of 25%.

Mr. Kissinger, who died on Wednesday, shared the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the peace accords that ended American involvement in the Vietnam War. The fighting between North Vietnam and U.S.-backed South Vietnam did not end until the North’s victory in 1975. Mr. Kissinger defended his wartime decisions for years afterward. Within Vietnam, Mr. Kissinger’s role in the war was contentious well before the fighting ended. When President Barack Obama visited in Hanoi in 2016, he said the United States would rescind a decades-old ban on sales of lethal military equipment to Vietnam.

Drugstore workers around the country started calling in sick Monday to highlight a lack of support from their employers, protest organizers said. She said organizers estimate that “at least hundreds” of pharmacists and technicians — mostly for Walgreens and other big retailers like CVS Health — were involved. Pharmacists say they have been dealing with difficult working conditions for years. Thibault said CVS Health is working to give its pharmacies room to schedule more staff. Ultimately, retail pharmacies need more staffing to avoid creating dangerous working conditions that lead to medication errors, Duong said.

VTRE has partnered with Australian mining companies Australian Strategic Materials (ASM) (ASM.AX) and Blackstone Minerals LTD (BSX.AX), which were not involved in the investigation. ASM signed a binding agreement in April with VTRE for the purchase of 100 tons of processed rare earths this year, and committed to negotiating a longer-term supply deal. Vietnam is planning to organise auctions for concessions at its largely unexploited rare earths mines, which are considered to contain the world's second biggest deposits of the critical minerals used in electric cars and wind turbines.

CNN —When it comes to developing high blood pressure, Covid-19 might play an outsized role, a new study says. Of the hospitalized Covid-19 patients, more than 1 in 5 developed hypertension during their time in the hospital, while actively infected with Covid-19, despite having no history of high blood pressure. However, in comparison with patients who were infected with the flu, Covid-19 patients had worse blood pressure outcomes. Covid-19 patients who had been hospitalized were 2.23 times as likely to develop high blood pressure as hospitalized influenza patients. But scientists are unsure how the Covid-19 virus might trigger new-onset high blood pressure.

Blockchain technology could be a safeguard that prevents artificial intelligence from running amok, Coinbase said. Few crypto projects are currently working in AI, but there's a wide range of problems blockchain can address. Blockchain could help combat the spread of misinformation and shed light on AI decision-making. Demand for computational resources - Generative AI requires a lot of computing power, and blockchain could help by creating a system where resources are shared. "Integrating blockchain technology into AI models can help make those processes more transparent and allow users to scrutinize the logic and reliability of AI-produced outcomes."

Several cities in Southeast Asia experienced sweltering temperatures over the weekend, with some areas hitting new all-time highs as global climate change intensifies both heat waves and air pollution in the region. Luang Prabang, a city in Laos, saw a record-high temperature of 110.3 degrees Fahrenheit (43.5 degrees Celsius) Saturday, according to the Thai Meteorological Department. Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, also experienced a record-high temperature of 105.8 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius) over the weekend. Singapore hit 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius) Saturday, matching its all-time record, which was recorded 40 years ago, the National Environment Agency said. Southeast Asia is one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change, which has fueled more frequent and severe heat waves and worsened the region's air pollution.
Hong Kong CNN —Temperature records tumbled across Southeast Asia over the weekend as the region swelters under a weekslong heat wave that has brought misery to millions. Scientists have long warned that heat waves are set to get worse as the impacts of the human-caused climate crisis accelerate. In neighboring Laos, the city of Luang Prabang hit 43.5 degrees Celsius (110.3 Fahrenheit) on Saturday, breaking the national record of 42.7 degrees Celsius (108.9 Fahrenheit) that was only set last month, Herrera said. The Laotian capital Vientiane also broke its all-time record this weekend with a temperature of 42.5 degrees Celsius (108.5 Fahrenheit). Meanwhile in Thailand, Saturday saw the hottest ever temperature recorded in Bangkok – 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 Fahrenheit).
