After a tough year for the restaurant industry, executives can't wait for 2025 to start. And many of the nation's largest restaurant chains, from McDonald's to Starbucks , have disappointed investors with same-store sales declines for at least one quarter. But green shoots have appeared, fueling tepid optimism for the future of the restaurant industry. Plus, interest rates are finally falling. For restaurants, lower interest rates mean that it's cheaper to finance new locations, fueling growth.

Here's why Americans are obsessed with iced coffee
  + stars: | 2024-11-15 | by ( Ryan Baker | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
In 2023, Americans spent about $17.7 billion on out-of-home cold coffee including iced coffee, cold brew and frozen coffee drinks. Giants like Starbucks have played a major role in iced drinks taking share from more traditional hot coffee. 45% of coffee drinkers ages 18 to 24 said they had a cold coffee in the past day according to a survey conducted in July 2024 by the National Coffee Association. Cold coffee drinks are highly customizable, with syrups, toppings and cold foam incorporated into many of the popular offerings at major coffeehouse chains. Watch the video to learn more about why cold coffee has taken off in the United States.

“This is a critical time of year, the time when most retailers make a lot of their money,” Schade said. Only four companies in the top 50 retailers earned an A or A- — Apple, Sephora, Target and Walmart. Three companies — Ulta Beauty, IKEA and Whole Foods Market — received a B grade, while 26 companies were equally split between C and D grades. “We also grade companies on whether the changes requested from their suppliers are actually implemented, if they have truly ‘banned the bad,’ so to speak,” Peele said. Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the number of retailers who earned an A or A-.

Meal deals and value meals are more important to fast-food chains than ever. I decided to try four other fast-food chains' breakfast meals to see how they compared. AdvertisementThe fast-food wars are going strong, and brands are adding deals and value meals to their menus to attract customers who are feeling the pinch. In August, Dunkin' became the latest chain to add a meal deal when it launched its $6 breakfast. I tried it after its release and was so impressed by its 50% discount that I wanted to try other fast-food breakfast meals to see how they stacked up.

That will soon become a reality in Texas with a new restaurant that unites the two chains under the same roof. Dine Brands, which owns the two restaurants, announced that the combined Applebee’s-IHOP restaurant will open approximately 35 miles west of San Antonio early next year, marking the first time the company has brought the concept to the United States. Plans for the dual-branded restaurant were announced earlier this year as part of Dine Brand’s plan to grow the two restaurants, which both reported lackluster earnings Wednesday. The idea is to maximize revenue with the same footprint of a traditional restaurant. That’s because the two restaurants’ menus encompass all parts of the day (pancakes and eggs Benedict for breakfast and steak and wings for dinner) and will have staff trained to work with both.

Beyond Meat will introduce a whole-muscle steak alternative as part of its pivot to win over health-conscious consumers. In recent months, Brown has blamed some of the plant-based meat industry's woes on misinformation from the meat industry and cattle farmers, such as skepticism about plant-based meat's processing. Beyond already sells plant-based steak tips, but the new product mimics the texture of a filet with mycelium, the rootlike part of fungi. Brown envisions the steak alternative as a substitute for chicken, topping salads and stuffing burritos as a source of protein. The new products have short ingredients lists, in the hopes of winning over customers who previously thought plant-based meat was too processed.

It's caused tension in our marriage because my spouse and I clash over our expenditure on our kids. However, now that I'm married with kids, mocking my frugal upbringing has become a bit of a family joke. We constantly clash over how much we spend on the kids. Left to his own devices, my husband could easily spend between $500 and $700 on each child. In an ideal world, kids wouldn't bully each other for not wearing the "right" label.

The fruity energy drink debuts less than two months after bakery-cafe chain Panera Bread announced it was discontinuing its controversial Charged Lemonade, a beverage that lawsuits blamed for two deaths and referred to as a "dangerous energy drink." The Iced Energy comes in three flavors, including its most caffeinated flavor, Tropical Citrus, which has 205 milligrams of caffeine, according to Starbucks' website. Panera started phasing out the Charged Lemonade on May 7, and it has denied any wrongdoing, saying it removed the beverage as part of a broader menu transformation. Except for its Frozen Tropical Citrus Iced Energy with Strawberry Puree, Iced Energy is sugar-free, containing artificial sweeteners. Charged Lemonade and Iced Energy are part of a growing category called "functional beverages" that chains big and small are eager to jump into, according to experts.
