"I'm not running to terminate the ACA," former President Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post in March. That is, unless he could "come up with a plan that's going to cost our people, our population, less money and be better health care than Obamacare." Around 60% of Americans hold a favorable opinion of the 2010 health care law, a recent KFF poll found. The Harris campaign released a report on Monday that paints a dire picture of health care under a hypothetical Trump administration. The average ACA plan deductible, or amount a person must spend before their coverage kicks in, was over $3,000 in 2024, with some plan deductibles exceeding $7,000, KFF found.

Western-trained pilots can teach Chinese military personnel everything from air combat tactics to how to land on an aircraft carrier, according to a US official. Former western pilots — which number at least in the dozens — are training Chinese military officials who then return to China and, in turn, train more pilots there, this person said. An indictment in 2017 alleged that Duggan trained Chinese pilots while he was still a US citizen, between November 2009 and November 2012. That same month, the UK Ministry of Defense issued a security alert after several of its military pilots were also found to have been training the PLA Air Force. Last August, two US Navy sailors were arrested for allegedly sending sensitive military information to Chinese intelligence officers.

Read previewFor decades, Detroit was an international symbol of urban decay: abandoned neighborhoods, decrepit former factories, and a population exodus. From July 2022 to July 2023, the US Census Bureau says Detroit's population grew by close to 2,000 residents, bumping the city's population to 633,218. AdvertisementWith Detroit's latest population numbers, the city also jumped from the 29th-largest to the 26th-largest city in the United States, overtaking Memphis, Louisville, and Portland. Detroit's numbers are still far from 1950, when the city's population peaked at about 1.85 million. Back then, it was the fifth-largest city in the United States, behind only New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.

CNN —A former US Marine pilot fighting extradition from Australia on US charges of training Chinese military pilots to land on aircraft carriers, unknowingly worked with a Chinese hacker, his lawyer said. The lawyer’s filing supports Reuters reporting linking Duggan to convicted Chinese defense hacker Su Bin. The case will be heard in a Sydney court this month, two years after his arrest in rural Australia at a time when Britain was warning its former military pilots not to work for China. Su Bin, arrested in Canada in 2014, pleaded guilty in 2016 to theft of US military aircraft designs by hacking major US defense contractors. Duggan asked Su Bin to help source Chinese aircraft parts for his Top Gun tourist flight business in Australia, Collaery wrote.

"A land value tax would fix that" has become a popular, and sometimes comedic, Twitter response to a range of policy conundrums among urbanists and YIMBYs. It would incentivize landowners to maximize the revenue from their property — building an apartment building instead of, for example, a parking lot. And because rich individuals and corporations own most land in cities and towns, land taxes would disproportionately fall on the wealthiest. Pure Georgists advocate for abolishing all taxes besides land value taxes. Instead, they want to see more regressive levies — like sales taxes — or those that penalize investment — like property taxes — reduced.

From 2011 to 2015, about 100,000 properties — more than a quarter of the Detroit lots — were auctioned in tax foreclosures, according to Regrid, a Detroit-based provider of parcel data nationally. (Speculators recently made money after the city bought out vacant lots to help revive an auto plant that would bring jobs to the area.) Mr. Allen said his main project at the agency was finding new ways to stimulate growth that didn’t rely on grants and tax breaks. After reading “Progress and Poverty” years earlier, he’d become obsessed with the problem of speculation, and suggested a land-value tax. A tax break for residents — paid for by nameless investors who are “taking advantage of the city” — would seem like a political layup.

Union wages, and the battles to keep them, have elevated the fortunes of countless Black families, Brooks said. “Black people could take advantage of that and buy homes in neighborhoods throughout Detroit,” Perry said. “Without the union jobs, (employers) can do anything, say anything and you're out the door,” she said. Only about 25% of Detroit's residents are in that range, and about two-thirds of city residents earn less than $50,000 per year, Goss said. SYDNEY (AP) — A Sydney court on Monday postponed an extradition hearing for a former U.S. military pilot accused of illegally training Chinese aviators until May as his lawyers attempt to further build their case. Boston-born Dan Duggan, 55, was scheduled to fight his extradition to the United States at a Nov. 23 hearing in the downtown Downing Center Local Court. But a magistrate decided to use that date to rule on what additional information that the Australian defense department and security agencies should provide defense lawyers. U.S. lawyer Trent Glover told the court the United States was ready to proceed with the extradition, but had agreed with defense lawyers the hearing should take place after November. Duggan’s lawyers say they expect additional material will demonstrate the overtly political aspects of the extradition request.

A series of cases where former military pilots living in Australia had worked for a South African flight school training Chinese pilots, which the United States alleges are Chinese military pilots, has prompted the crackdown. Penalties of up to 20 years prison will apply for providing military training or tactics to a foreign military or government body, including hybrid civilian and military organisations, or state-owned companies, without authorisation from the defence minister. The Test Flying Academy of South Africa was placed on a U.S. trade blacklist on national security grounds in June for "providing training to Chinese military pilots using Western and NATO sources". A court was told Hartley, a former British military pilot, was suspected of organising the training of Chinese military pilots delivered by the flight school.
