The S & P 500 will be propelled to new heights in the new year thanks to momentum in artificial intelligence, a resilient economy and the possibility of easier regulation on industries, according to JPMorgan. The labor market has also held up, with more than 100,000 jobs being added in all but one month this year. The S & P 500 is up 4.1% since the Nov. 5 vote. UBS said this week it sees the S & P 500 rising to 6,400 , while Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley expect an expansion to 6,500. Last month, the Federal Reserve slashed interest rates by a half point – the first time the central bank cut rates since 2020. Since the Sept. 18 meeting, the market has moved even higher, with all three major averages gaining between 1% and 3%. The bank noted that several of the companies in the screen have lagged the cyclical recovery, making the stocks likely to benefit from the market's ongoing rotation. A top strategist at JPMorgan who was caught offside by the stock market rally is quitting the investment firm. Marko Kolanovic, who served as chief global markets strategist and co-head of global research, is leaving the bank to explore other opportunities, according to a source familiar with the internal announcement. In his place, Hussein Malik will become the sole head of global research, and Dubravko Lakos-Bujas will serve as chief markets strategist. Kolanovic rose to prominence among market watchers for correctly predicting a stock market rebound in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. JPMorgan's current year-end prediction for the S&P 500 is 4,200, while no other major firm in the CNBC Market Strategist Survey is below 5,200.

Now that the S & P 500 and most major stock market indexes are at or near historic highs, expect a raft of earnings and year-end price target revisions for the S & P 500 to be coming. First up with an upward revision was Brian Belski at BMO Capital, who Wednesday raised his year-end S & P target to 5,600 from 5,100. The median price target (half above, half below) is 5,200. Even as the S & P 500 nears a new high, JPMorgan's Dubravko Lakos-Bujas remains relatively pessimistic on how 2024 will pan out.
