Three years ago, a drone took flight at an Ikea warehouse in Switzerland for the first time. They're more self-sufficient, too: For every 10 minutes that a Verity drone is in flight, it charges for 20 minutes. Ikea's investments in Verity's drone technology fit into its broader strategy to explore and test newer supply-chain technologies. Jönsson added that deploying drones has allowed employees to have more time for analyzing inventory data. Before using warehouse drones, workers would check thousands of pallets repeatedly in order to manage inventory.

Chick-fil-A began testing drone delivery in Texas and North Carolina last year. Retailers and restaurants testing drone service include Walmart, Amazon, and Jersey Mike's. Chick-fil-A restaurants in Granbury, Texas, and Durham, North Carolina, have been testing drone deliveries since September 2022. AdvertisementIn Florida, customers within the restaurant's drone drop zone can order delivery by drone through the Chick-fil-A app. Drone delivery is still experimental in the US but is catching on among top retailers and restaurant chains.

Prime Air drones, along with most other delivery drones, operate with a number of federal exemptions that greatly restrict where and how they can fly. DroneUp, a Walmart -backed startup competing alongside Amazon and others in the nascent drone delivery market, is cutting jobs across the company, CNBC has learned. DroneUp is one of several startups racing to make drone delivery a reality. UPS , Amazon and Alphabet 's Wing unit are also in various stages of developing their own drone delivery services. Attempts at scaling commercial drone delivery in the U.S. have been slow moving, largely due to technical challenges and a lengthy regulatory approval process with the Federal Aviation Administration. The economic downturn has also proven a setback for some drone delivery operators.

But with the release of its latest drone, Zipline is spreading its unmanned wings far beyond medicine. Zipline also has relationships with medical providers in the country, and in recent years has conducted long-range medical drone flights in challenging geographies including the Appalachian regions of North Carolina. In 2022, Zipline became the first company to receive FAA Part 135 approval for long-range drone delivery in the U.S., a huge step towards greater domestic expansion. From lunch deliveries with Sweetgreen to health prescriptions from Walmart, Zipline can maneuver peak order times by creating its Zips in a way that automatically redistributes the drones from dock to dock for loading and launching. Zipline has already completed 540,000 deliveries to customers, which is more than what Alphabet and Amazon have delivered combined.

The company gained success with its initial model, first used to deliver blood to hospitals and clinics in Rwanda. Now, Zipline is trying to gain a greater foothold in the U.S., delivering food and medicine straight to customer's doorsteps. While companies like DroneUp, Wing, and Amazon Prime Air are also working in this space, Zipline hopes to be the first to scale drone delivery in the U.S.

To deliver cargo to a customer's door, the P2 Zip hovers around 300 feet above ground level and dispatches a kind of mini-aircraft and container called the "droid." Setting up one of these docks takes about as much work as installing an electric vehicle charger, Rinaudo Cliffton said. Before developing the P2 Zip, Zipline had established logistics networks in Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Japan, Kenya, Nigeria and Rwanda already. It is operating some drone delivery networks in the US, in North Carolina, Arkansas and Utah -- but the P2 will help it expand that network. The droid component of the P2 Zip is designed to enter distribution centers through a small portal, where it's loaded up with goods for delivery.
