The returned book contained the borrower’s library card, leading staff to believe that the original patron who took out the book was a businessman from the Pursimiehenkatu area of the Finnish capital. Now, Conan Doyle’s letters recounting that fated dinner and his sole handwritten manuscript of “The Sign of Four” are being auctioned by Sotheby’s New York, alongside other literary treasures. This particular change to “The French Connection” came unexplained and unannounced, so we can only guess at the precise reasoning behind it. We see a bit of banter between two policemen working in what was then called the “inner city,” dialogue underlining their “good cop, bad cop” dynamic; in certain ways, it’s not so different from the set pieces you would find in Blaxploitation films of the era. He is one in a long line of characters that would stretch forward into shows like “The Shield” and “The Wire”: figures built on the idea that “good cop, bad cop” can describe not just an interrogation style or a buddy-film formula but also a single officer. The one newly smuggled into “The French Connection” reveals, to use a period term, the hand of the Man, even if it’s unclear from which direction it’s reaching. Censors, like overzealous cops, can be too aggressive, or too simplistic, in their attempts to neutralize perceived threats.

The sequel to Netflix’s hit feature film “Enola Holmes” may not have the cleverest title, but “Enola Holmes 2” is just as quick-witted and charming as the original. A quirky take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic mysteries, Enola is more than ready for another adorable, all-ages romp. Springer’s books, and the films, invent a female character that Doyle never conceived of, and put her front and center. “Sherlock Holmes” is one of the most adapted mysteries series in history. Hopefully the success of the “Enola Holmes” franchise encourages them to make more.

Insurance broker and benefits firm Marsh & McLennan said Chief Executive Officer Daniel S. Glaser will retire at the end of the year and Chief Operating Officer John Q. Doyle will succeed him. Mr. Doyle’s promotion to the top job mimics Mr. Glaser’s own path back in September 2012. Then, Mr. Glaser, the chief operating officer, was named CEO. Mr. Doyle, who is 58, will take over from Mr. Glaser, now 62.
