How Elon Musk Got Tangled Up in Blue

By Nov. 9, 2022, anxiety was high among the Twitter employees gathered at the company’s San Francisco headquarters. They had spent part of that morning trying to gently explain to their new boss, Elon Musk, that the service they had just launched was dangerous. With Mr. Musk out of earshot, the welcoming, deferential mood in the room immediately changed. The employees knew that users relied on the verified check marks to ensure that information on the platform — including bus times or hurricane evacuation orders or a pop star’s musings — was indeed real. “Somebody could die, actually,” he said.

Place de la Concorde, Paris CNN —Triumph and tragedy are everywhere you look at the Olympics, and the men’s BMX park final on Wednesday had a surfeit of both. With the AC-130J model, introduced in 2017, the Air Force removed the machine guns in favor of the more precision-guided munitions. Before last year, paid sick leave was generally not offered to railroad workers. That's instead of joining all the other major freight railroads in negotiating jointly with rail unions on an agreement over pay and benefits. The rail industry reached the brink of a strike in the fall of 2022 before Congress and President Joe Biden intervened to force rail workers to accept a contract. Union Pacific, BNSF and Norfolk Southern now have paid sick time agreements in place with all their unions. Canadian National also trails behind the big U.S. railroads, but still offers sick time to about 46% of its U.S. workers.

So as the climate crisis forces up ocean temperatures, rapid intensification becomes more likely, pushing storms to explode at a rapid pace into deadly hurricanes, scientists say. dowell | Moment | Getty ImagesIf you're sitting on profitable assets, there's a lesser-known tax-gain harvesting strategy, which can help rebalance your portfolio or trim future taxes. While tax-loss harvesting can be popular during a stock market downturn, tax-gain harvesting — or strategically selling appreciated brokerage account assets — can also be beneficial, depending on your financial goals, experts say. One of the key opportunities for tax-gain harvesting is for investors who fall into the 0% capital gains bracket, which applies to long-term capital gains, or assets owned for more than one year. The 0% bracket allows you to sell a certain amount of profitable assets without triggering capital gains taxes, which provides a chance to take the proceeds or rebalance your portfolio, according to Brown. While the so-called wash sale rule blocks investors from claiming a tax benefit after selling a losing asset and repurchasing within 30 days, the law doesn't apply when harvesting gains, Collado said.

Money market funds — which are different than money market deposit accounts — are a type of mutual fund that typically invests in shorter-term, lower-credit-risk debt, such as Treasury bills. Currently, some money market mutual funds are outperforming assets such as high-yield savings accounts or newly purchased Series I bonds. Money market funds have less liquidity than savingsChristopher Lyman, a certified financial planner with Allied Financial Advisors in Newtown, Pennsylvania, said he's still proposing money market mutual funds for certain clients, with the caveat of higher risks or more stipulations for accessing the money. What's more, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission recently adopted "liquidity fees" for certain money market funds for withdrawals when daily outflows exceed 5% of the fund's value. Money market funds aren't risk freeWhile money market funds typically invest in lower-risk assets, experts say it's important to know the funds aren't risk free.

CNN —Tupperware may be on the verge of collapse, but the 77-year-old business’ potential demise isn’t necessarily a harbinger of worsening economic conditions. Some business experts say that’s because Tupperware has failed to adapt to changing consumer behaviors. The Tupperware brand name is so iconic that it’s become shorthand for all food leftover storage. That might be part of the problem, as other brands have emerged to compete against Tupperware, sometimes at lower price points. Tupperware has historically only sold to consumers through “direct sales,” most commonly at “Tupperware parties.” These parties were gatherings where people who enjoyed the product would demo and sell the Tupperware brand to their friends and acquaintances.
CNN —As the hurricane season closes, a handful of blockbuster storms made history after an eerily quiet first half of the season gave false hope. In fact, we didn’t have any named storms from July 3 to August 31, the first time that’s occurred since 1941. One of those storms was Hurricane Ian, which hit land in late September and will go down as the most memorable storm of the 2022 season. “Tropical storms have formed in every month outside of hurricane season, and there have been a few hurricanes, too,” NOAA said. Historically, we’ve seen at least 15 named storms form in the month of December, even all the way up to December 30.
A Georgia college student was killed when he was struck by the propeller of the small aircraft he was on for a date-night flight, officials said Tuesday. The accident was reported shortly after 10:30 p.m. Sunday at Statesboro-Bulloch County Airport in Georgia, the Federal Aviation Administration said. "After the plane taxied to the ramp area, a passenger got out and was struck by the propeller," the agency said. Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch told the Statesboro Herald that the student, Sani Aliyu of Atlanta, was on a date that included a round-trip flight to Savannah. Aliyu was a sophomore at Georgia Southern University, school officials said.
The National Weather Service has also issued the highest-possible wind warning for several regions in Florida in anticipation of extreme wind damage from the storm. Hurricane Ian approaches west coast of Florida on Sept. 28th, 2022. A sail boat is beached at Sarasota Bay as Hurricane Ian approaches on September 28, 2022 in Sarasota, Florida. President Joe Biden told Florida residents Wednesday he would support them through the storm "every step of the way." Utility trucks are staged in a rural lot in The Villages of Sumter County, Fla., Wednesday morning, Sept. 28, 2022, in preparation for Hurricane Ian.
