Shares of some aerospace and defense companies could fall under added pressure from President-elect Donald Trump's reduced government spending plans. Goldman is forecasting that the U.S. defense budget will soon flatten out and then decline, partly given that it's at an all-time high and that current geopolitical conflicts could potentially be met with a resolution. "Defense spending cycles up and down over time, and can be vulnerable to efforts to reduce total government spending." Poponak noted that although Trump has expressed broad support for the U.S. military and Department of Defense, any cost-cutting effort could still be a blow for the national defense budget. "Lower defense spending would flow to government IT to some degree.

President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Elon Musk to help spearhead cuts to government spending, and the defense sector could be a prime target. But Musk's past comments hint at one area he could target: defense contracts. Musk built SpaceX's business model around fixed-price contracts. Trump nominated Wray in 2017 after firing James Comey, but he began to sour on him before he left office in 2021. The 10-year term is designed to keep the FBI director position insulated from political whims. “Kash is frightening at the bureau,” one source familiar with internal deliberations about the role of FBI director. Trump also briefly considered installing Patel as deputy FBI director in the closing weeks of his first administration. Officials said they hope it will speed up the maintenance and repairs of weapons systems being used by the Ukrainian military. “In order to help Ukraine repair and maintain military equipment provided by the US and its allies, DoD (Department of Defense) is soliciting bids for a small number of contractors who will help Ukraine maintain the assistance we’ve already provided,” a defense official said. Allowing experienced, US government-funded American contractors to maintain a presence in Ukraine means they will be able to help fix damaged, high-value equipment much faster, officials have told CNN. “The Department made this decision after careful risk assessment and in coordination with interagency stakeholders,” the defense official said. Instead, it would likely result in anywhere from a few dozen to a couple hundred contractors working in Ukraine at a time.

CNN —Pentagon officials are holding informal discussions about how the Department of Defense would respond if Donald Trump issues orders to deploy active-duty troops domestically and fire large swaths of apolitical staffers, defense officials told CNN. “Troops are compelled by law to disobey unlawful orders,” said another defense official. “But the question is what happens then – do we see resignations from senior military leaders? At the time, defense officials tried to include as few civilian employees as possible to limit the impact to the workforce, sources said. But “there are still ways a new administration could work around these protections,” a defense official said, even if it might take several months to do so.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Elon Musk and Vladimir Putin have shared secret calls since 2022. A former DoD analyst said that a relationship like this could pose national security concerns. Because of his work with the federal government via SpaceX, Musk holds a security clearance that gives him access to some classified information. "The security clearance adjudication process looks at several factors, and undue foreign influence is just one of those factors," Stransky, now a partner at Thompson Hine law firm, said. The existence of an ongoing Musk-Putin relationship would be further complicated by the billionaire tech leader's recent foray into US politics.

An Army spokesperson previously said in August that the service “considers this matter closed.”The Army on Friday released a highly redacted police report filed in August by the employee. “The law enforcement investigation into the incident remains open and we are therefore unable to provide further information at this time,” an Army release including the report said on Friday. CNN —The US Army has been ordered by a federal judge to release records related to former President Donald Trump’s controversial August visit to Arlington National Cemetery by Friday at the latest. The expedited release is a result of a lawsuit by American Oversight, a non-partisan watchdog nonprofit advocating for the release of government records. The group submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for any records relating to interactions between Trump campaign staff and the employee. CNN has asked the Army and the Trump campaign for comment. The incident also prompted the Army to issue the unusually sharp rebuke of the Trump campaign.

The news comes after a major report earlier this year revealed the Navy's biggest projects, including new Virginia-class submarines, were facing severe delays of up to three years. The Navy attributed shipbuilding delays across its top programs to COVID-19's impact on the workforce and supply chain. "Somehow, the Navy continues to assert that commitments to INDOPACOM and our AUKUS partners remain on track" despite Virginia-class delays, he said. Virginia-class submarines are considered vital to the US' role in deterring and, if necessary, fighting China.

Recent reports have said that the US is deciding whether to transfer AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles, or JASSMs, to Ukraine. These high-profile weapons would give Kyiv a significantly farther strike range than any other Western munitions it has in its arsenal. As is, it still restricts the country from using its powerful US-provided tactical ballistic missiles to strike military targets inside Russia. A US Air Force F-16 before releasing a Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile. We're approaching a new era of defense, one that will use AI-enabled military drones that can run without a human operator. According to BTIG, the DoD requested $5.3 billion in fiscal year 2025 for unmanned systems, most of which is directed at procurement programs. The firm forecasts the DoD's entire unmanned funding requests to grow at a 9.5% compound annual growth rate through fiscal year 2029. General Dynamics is another of Madrid's buy-rated stock in the unmanned systems arena. Strong demand of its defense products, including ammo and ground vehicles, also indicate earnings growth potential, the analyst added.
