Women's rights activist Lilly Ledbetter has died, according to a family representative. Ledbetter, best known for advocating for equal pay for women, died as a result of respiratory failure on Saturday night. But Democrats in Congress — urged on by a dissenting opinion from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg — fought to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act became the first bill Barack Obama signed into law as president in 2009. Scardina had initially filed a discrimination complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division after Phillips refused to make the cake she wanted to order to celebrate her birthday and her identity as a transgender woman. Justice Melissa Hart, writing for the majority, said Scardina should have challenged that decision in an appeals court, rather than file a new lawsuit. The U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 ruled in Phillips’ favor but on narrow grounds that avoided setting a major precedent allowing people to claim religious exemptions from anti-discrimination laws. CNN —An Ohio restaurant is not responsible for a customer’s injury after a bone was found in an order of boneless wings, a divided Ohio Supreme Court ruled Thursday, affirming an appellate court’s earlier decision. Berkheimer’s medical records said that a doctor found a “5cm-long chicken bone” lodged in his esophagus, according to court records. Berkheimer sued the restaurant, a food supplier, and a chicken farm in the Butler County Common Pleas Court in 2017. In 2023, Berkheimer appealed to the Supreme Court, which agreed to hear the case, the release said. On Thursday, the Ohio Supreme Court affirmed the dismissal of the lawsuit, saying the customer could have guarded against a piece of bone in his meal.
