Drake alleged in a court filing Monday that Universal Music Group and Spotify conspired to “artificially inflate” Lamar’s summer hit “Not Like Us” by using bots, payola, and other tactics. (UMG, a Dutch American-owned company, has no relation to NBC Universal, the parent company of NBC News.) Both Drake and Lamar are signed to UMG, under different different divisions — Drake under Republic Records and Lamar under Interscope. The filing alleged that UMG violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, and engaged in deceptive business practices ad false advertising. “I speak for EVERYONE when i say we stand with UMG Drake acting like a spoilt brat who lost,” one X user said.

This spiraled into a diss-track war in April and May, with Cole, Drake, Rick Ross, and Lamar all releasing new songs. Later in the track, Drake references Cole's diss track and apology. Evan Agostini/Invision/APLater in the track, Drake raps that he gave Future his first No. At the end of the track, Lamar samples a 1994 Tupac interview to simulate a conversation between the two rappers. Instead of insulting Drake, Lamar claims that the "Push Ups" rapper's circle has been feeding him lies, leaking information about him, and hoping for his downfall.

UMG's choice to saturate the music market with 'Not Like Us' comes at the expense of its other artists, like Drake." And Drake is one of the biggest artists streaming on Spotify, with about 10 million more monthly listeners than Lamar. Music industry insiders, meanwhile, are skeptical of the allegations themselves. In other words, for the top of the music industry, rigging with bots would be "not like us." By throwing lawyers and corporations into the rap battle, Drake has made it much less street and much more corporate.

CNN —Musician Drake alleges that Universal Music Group “conspired” to artificially boost Kendrick Lamar’s searing diss track “Not Like Us” on Spotify, according to a pre-action petition submitted to a New York court on Monday. It has also amassed almost 900 million streams on Spotify to date, according to the petition. Drake is currently represented by Republic Records, a division of UMG and Lamar is currently represented by Interscope records, also a division of UMG. Drake’s petition accuses UMG of paying an independent radio promoter acting as an intermediary, who then paid other radio stations to boost airplay of Lamar’s track. “Not Like Us” became the most successful song spawned by the feud and earned five Grammy nominations earlier this month.

Haley Joel Osment Sees Contentment

Haley Joel Osment’s childhood memories are not like other people’s. A phalanx of Osment clones, made for that movie, are still floating around — he heard they might have ended up stockpiled in Peter Jackson’s trove of memorabilia in New Zealand. If the apocalypse happens, Osment jokes, that preteen version of him will survive. It is, in any case, the form in which many fans know him best — especially as the notably named Cole Sear, the teary-eyed center of “The Sixth Sense,” M. Night Shyamalan’s blockbuster supernatural thriller from August 1999. It was a phrase so potent that, 25 years after its arrival, it is a Kendrick Lamar lyric — on a Drake diss track, no less.

Earlier this week, another product contending for the future of AI companionship made its debut: an eavesdropping necklace called Friend. AdvertisementSchiffmann's original vision for an AI hardware device was a pendant that would act as a more standard-fare AI assistant called Tab — he once described it as a "wearable mom." Of the many AI hardware devices that launched in recent months, such as Humane's AI pin, Meta's smart glasses, and Rabbit's AI-powered R1, Friend is the most personal contender. In fact, on the day Friend launched, a competing AI hardware founder named Nik Shevchenko released a diss track — as any self-respecting 23-year-old AI hardware founder would do — insinuating that Schiffmann stole his idea. (It would not be the first time that Shevchenko built an open source competitor that closely resembled another AI hardware device.

CNN —A group of major record labels is suing two AI startups, alleging they wrongfully used popular artists’ work to train their systems to produce copyrighted music without their consent. Udio is the company behind “BBL Drizzy,” the AI-generated song that went viral last month during the Kendrick Lamar and Drake spat. Udio was founded last year by former Google DeepMind researchers to make it “easy for anyone to create emotionally resonant music in an instant,” according to the company.
