Disney dodges the Trump question
  + stars: | 2024-11-14 | by ( Peter Kafka | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +4 min
Last week, Warner Bros. "In a way, we've already consolidated," he said on the company's earnings call Thursday morning, in response to a question about M&A possibilities during Trump 2.0. Disney, like other media companies that have news organizations, has already drawn Trump's ire, during the 2024 campaign. During that fight, conservatives harped on the company, calling it too "woke," while liberals — including some Disney employees — felt the company wasn't forceful enough in standing up for diversity. AdvertisementIt's no surprise, then, that Iger didn't say the word "Trump" once during his call.

In past years, media companies chased high subscriber numbers in an attempt to best each other. Nathaniel S. Butler | National Basketball Association | Getty ImagesWith the NBA's media rights negotiations still ongoing, sports will remain a topic of conversation at this year's gathering. League commissioners, especially the NFL's Roger Goodell, are often attendees of the Sun Valley conference. Discovery has been weighing whether to match a competing offer for the media rights as the league looks to finalize smaller package deals. Sports remain the glue holding the traditional pay-TV bundle together, and has proven invaluable for streaming services, too.

It's a victory for CEO Bob Iger against activist investor Nelson Peltz. AdvertisementDisney CEO Bob Iger has officially prevailed in his battle against activist investor Nelson Peltz. Disney had been expected to prevail in the Peltz proxy battle. AdvertisementThe battle, though, likely prompted Iger and the board to redouble its focus on the next Disney CEO. "Regardless of the outcome of today's vote, Trian will be watching this company's performance," Peltz said at the meeting before the decision.

Disney's fiscal first-quarter earnings per share beat expectations and it said its full-year EPS will rise at least 20% from 2023. Iger also unveiled his strategy and timeline for bringing Disney's flagship sports network ESPN into the streaming era. AdvertisementThe company will launch a stand-alone streaming service with ESPN and its sister networks in the fall of 2025, something Iger called "inevitable." Even if there's consumer demand, the JV faces several hurdles, from challenges brought by existing distributors to antitrust opposition, LightShed Partners wrote in a note published ahead of Disney's earnings release. Challenges aside, the new sports streaming strategy is a big step forward for Iger and Disney.

ESPN parent Disney and Fox report earnings on Wednesday, and more answers could be on the way. Here are six of the biggest questions coming out of the new announcement:How much will it cost? This new streamer could be the thing that finally kills cable TV. If they believe it has promise, could it give ESPN, Fox, and WBD more bargaining power in sports-right negotiations and greater ability to shoulder the sky-high costs? Will this new streamer come to the negotiating table for more sports rights to pad out its offering?

Disney's Bob Iger got out of a jam with two of his biggest stars: Jimmy Kimmel and Pat McAfee. AdvertisementThere aren't a lot of media moguls who could get out of a jam involving two of their biggest stars and accusations of pedophilia. It's unclear when McAfee intends to bring Rodgers back or if he ever will; ESPN reps declined to comment. One of the reasons is that while Disney and ESPN are reported to be paying McAfee $85 million over five years to bring his daily talk show to ESPN, McAfee isn't a Disney employee. And certainly not one about one of ESPN's biggest stars, who's supposed to represent its path to the future.

Disney has offered to pay Comcast $8.6 billion to take full control of Hulu. Disney is already in the process of rolling out a unified app that'll make Hulu's general entertainment content available in Disney+ . "With Hulu firmly in the Disney fold, they can create their own mini-bundle with kids and family (Disney +), general entertainment (Hulu), and sports (ESPN). The valuation also has to take into account that Hulu contains an entire Disney basic cable network, FX on Hulu. Netflix popularized the model of owning shows outright, but now streamers are reconsidering licensing. But now those walls are beginning to come down at competitors like Amazon, Apple, and Warner Bros. Under the cost-plus model championed by Netflix, the streamer paid more for shows upfront than legacy TV platforms had traditionally paid. But as part of those rich deals, Netflix retained future licensing rights, depriving producers of windowing opportunities — i.e., syndication or foreign distribution rights — that could fund future projects. Now, with Hollywood entering a new phase of penny-pinching , the entertainment giants are easing up on exclusive ownership of content.

This post originally appeared in the Insider Today newsletter. Power players like Apple's Tim Cook and Disney's Bob Iger have descended on Idaho's Sun Valley Lodge for the annual and ultra-exclusive Allen & Co. conference. Allen & Co.'s annual conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, often referred to as "summer camp for billionaires," is a who's who of the biggest players in media and tech. But just because we're not there doesn't mean we can't speculate on what the biggest topics of discussion might be. I talked to Alison Brower, our LA bureau chief, and Alistair Barr, Insider's global tech editor, about what some of the most powerful people are talking about behind closed doors.

Disney's Bob Iger said the company's TV and cable businesses may not be core. Disney's no-growth TV and cable businesses "may not be core" to the company and it will be "expansive" about how it treats them, CEO Bob Iger said. Iger said that while cable TV had declined faster than he expected, Disney's parks business is doing well, the studio business has been successful, and streaming has a bright future. There's been industry speculation that Disney might sell ESPN; Iger stressed that Disney was committed to the business. On recent box office misses in Pixar's "Elemental" and "The Little Mermaid," Iger acknowledged Disney's zeal to grow its streaming business contributed to some "disappointments."

Nike CEO John Donahoe said Tuesday that Disney CEO Bob Iger is "doing a great job." "I think Bob's doing a great job at this," Donahoe said of Iger. Donahoe's remarks are the latest chapter in a yearlong feud that started in early 2022 when then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek objected to the DeSantis administration's "Don't Say Gay" bill. Iger, who returned as Disney CEO in November, has continued to battle with DeSantis. Disney and Nike have long supported each other and shared connective tissue.
CEOs are changing their corporate strategies more frequently for many reasons. Some CEOs didn't do the necessary medium- and long-term planning when they made their original decisions, and now they're being forced to backtrack. A new, lightning-fast pace of businessThe rapidly changing business environment makes one thing clear: For CEOs, the day-to-day marathon of running a company feels much more like a sprint. The average compensation in 2021 for CEOs of the top US companies was 399 times that of the average worker. Changing a strategy is one thing, but how a CEO communicates that change is another — particularly because these pivots are likely to happen more frequently.
Last month, Disney sued Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, escalating a war that's gone on for over a year. Iger threatened DeSantis, asking the governor if he wanted Disney to "pay more taxes or not." Disney's feud with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has gone from bitter to downright acrimonious in recent months. "One question: Does the state want us to invest more, employ more people, and pay more taxes — or not?" "We've built a business that employs, as we've said before, over 75,000 people and attracts tens of millions of people to the state," Iger said.
Disney's Bob Iger escalated the conflict between the company and Florida's Ron DeSantis on Wednesday. It's the latest move in a feud that began last year over Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill. Buckle up for a roller coaster ride, because the feud between Disney's CEO Bob Iger and Florida's Ron DeSantis just got bumpier. This is the latest — and most drastic — move in the clash between DeSantis and Iger, who inherited the battle with Disney from his predecessor Bob Chapek. Spokespeople for both Disney and DeSantis declined to give any additional comment.
A group of lawmakers will travel to California to meet with tech and media executives, including Apple CEO Tim Cook and Disney CEO Bob Iger, to discuss China-related topics, CNBC has confirmed. Around a dozen lawmakers representing both parties on the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party are set to make the three-day trip, led by Chair Mike Gallagher, R-Wisc., a spokesperson for the committee told CNBC. Just last week, Cook, whose company relies on China's massive workforce for phone production, met with China's minister of commerce about supply chain issues. Gallagher has previously said he wants Iger and Big Tech executives to testify before the panel. Companies named in this report either did not immediately respond or did not provide a comment.

Bob Iger's first stint as CEO of The Walt Disney Company saw the company acquire Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars as he turned Disney into the biggest name in franchise entertainment. But the success took a toll on his leadership abilities. In an interview with CNBC's "Squawk on the Street", Iger reflected on his time as CEO and identified flaws he believed he developed as he became more and more successful. "I thought it caused me to be a little bit more dismissive of other people's ideas." The 72-year-old Iger, who officially retired on Dec. 31, 2021, was only away from Disney for the first 11 months of 2022 before the company's board decided to replace his successor, Bob Chapek, and asked Iger to take his old job back.
