CNN —Two mistakes from Italy star Gianluigi Donnarumma proved decisive on Tuesday night as Arsenal claimed a 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. In the 20th minute, Donnarumma left his goal line to attempt to punch clear a cross from Leandro Trossard, but he was beaten to the ball by Havertz, who headed into the empty net. But Arsenal would double its lead in the 35th minute when Saka sent a curling free kick into the box. Gabriel Martinelli and Thomas Partey missed the ball, but so did Donnarumma and the cross found its way into his net. If you like your European midweek football this is the week for you, with 54 Champions League, Europa League and Conference League matches being crammed into three nights. The Champions League kicked things off with some of the competition’s favourites beginning to bare their teeth. It was also, incredibly, their 31st defeat from 37 Champions League group stage away games. Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and a first Champions League goal for James McAtee saw City get their first win of this year’s competition. They lost a number of key players in the summer and can’t even play Champions League games at their own home, with the 15,000 capacity Stade Francis-Le Ble not up to Champions League standards (they’re hosting matches at Guingamp’s Stade du Roudourou instead).

The two sides met at City’s Etihad Stadium on Sunday with both teams eager to strike first in this year’s title race. Just before half-time, Arsenal attacker Leandro Trossard committed a foul before kicking the ball across the pitch, earning a controversial second yellow card. Matt West/ShutterstockAfter being reduced to 10 players, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta adopted a highly defensive shape to try and protect the lead. “I think the win belongs to the players and for our fans,” Fonseca said after the game. May 4 (Reuters) - Napoli clinched the Serie A title on Thursday with five games to spare as they ended a 33-year drought stretching back to when Diego Maradona led them to the Scudetto in 1990. At the start of the season it would have been difficult to envisage Napoli becoming champions ahead of heavyweights such as Juventus and the two Milan clubs not to mention AS Roma. But after an exceptional transfer window and with Luciano Spalletti at the helm, Napoli dominated the title race while their main rivals all suffered slumps during the season. CONTENDERS FALTERAs Napoli surged ahead, suffering just one loss by the end of February, the other title contenders withered away as injuries plagued their squads. But Maurizio Sarri's side could only watch as Napoli became the fourth different team to win Serie A in as many years.
Before Luka Modric was a star midfielder for the Croatian national team, he was a teenager on the youth team for Dinamo Zagreb, whose coaches had to beg him to cut his hair because it got in his eyes every time he made a pass. A couple of decades later, his hair is still long. And his eye for a pass has made him one of the best soccer players on the planet and the key to a style of play that has transformed a tiny Slavic nation into the game’s most improbable powerhouse.
CNN —Goalkeeper Dominik Livaković made himself a national hero as Croatia beat Japan on penalties 1-1 (3-1) to reach the World Cup quarterfinals. Marko Djurica/ReutersJapan’s heartbreakDespite its defeat, Japan can look back at an impressive World Cup campaign. They made history Thursday as the first all-female refereeing crew for a men's World Cup match. Mbappé was one of the leading stars of the team's World Cup triumph four years ago. He also became just the third goalkeeper to save three penalties in a single World Cup shootout.
Croatia finished top of their Nations League group ahead of world champions France and Denmark, and the 2018 runners-up will be riding a wave of momentum heading into the tournament. "However, there are other national teams that have such ambitions, the most important is the first match with Morocco. "The team from Russia was second in the world, and when you look at where those players played, they were all top clubs. One player was from the Croatian league, and now there are seven or eight of them. Luck is that young players have older players alongside them to mature...
Now, Southgate is going further and further down his list just to fill seats on the plane. "The Chelsea medical staff have not given me a percentage of my chance of being back for the World Cup. Maguire has been a regular throughout Southgate's tenure, but has been demoted at United, starting only three league games this season. Rooney later suggested that going to the 2002 World Cup injured and playing through the pain was a mistake. Southgate's dilemma is does he risk defenders who have served him so well but aren't at 100%, or give others a chance.
CNN —Son Heung-Min’s hopes of playing at the World Cup later this month are in doubt after Tottenham confirmed the South Korean star will need surgery on a fracture around his left eye. The 30-year-old suffered the injury during Tottenham’s Champions League win against Marseille on Tuesday and now faces a race to be fit for Qatar 2022 which starts on November 20. “We can confirm that Heung-Min Son will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye,” Tottenham said in a statement on Wednesday. Kevin De Bruyne suffered a fractured eye while playing for Manchester City in the 2021 Champions League final and was back playing for Belgium at the European Championships within 21 days. South Korea begins its World Cup campaign against Uruguay on November 24 and will be desperate for its captain and best player to be fit in time.
CNN —The good news for Glasgow Rangers is the Scottish club has pocketed over $15 million for competing in the Champions League. The bad news is, after waiting 12 years to get back into the competition’s group stages, the club’s return has been nothing short of a nightmare. ANDY BUCHANAN/AFP/AFP via Getty ImagesAfter its long awaited return to the group stages, Rangers was immediately up against it after being handed a very difficult draw. We were all happy we came into the Champions League because we weren’t competing at this level in 12 years so that’s very positive,” he told reporters on Tuesday. Despite its disappointment on the pitch in Europe, Rangers will benefit financially from its Champions League campaign.
But none have been more famous – or loved by Napoli fans – than Diego Maradona. “I have a video of Napoli fans chanting the names of the players before the game against Liverpool. “But Kvaratskhelia is shrugging defenders off the ball.”According to Badalashvili, the reciprocated love Kvaratskhelia and the Napoli fans have for one another is what jumps out to him most. His surname is already ‘Kvaradona.’ Napoli fans gave him the nickname ‘Kvaradona.’ And when I spoke with Napoli fans, they said when they see Kvara, they see Maradona.”Kvaratskhelia attempts a shot against Rangers in the Champions League. In the cities in Georgia, you will see very many people in shirts of Kvara: either Napoli shirts or Georgian national team.
