LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers’ 7-6 victory over the Yankees in Game 5 for their eighth World Series title and second in five years averaged 18.6 million viewers on Fox, Fox Deportes and streaming, according to Nielsen. That is the most-watched game in the Fall Classic since Game 7 in 2019 when the Washington Nationals’ victory over the Houston Astros averaged 23.22 million. The series averaged 15.81 million, its best performance since 2017 when Houston’s victory over the Dodgers in seven games averaged 18.93 million. The game had a 21.1 rating and 55 share in Los Angeles and 14.8 rating and 39 share in New York. The share refers to a percentage of the audience viewing it at the time.

Friday’s game was the most-watched Game 1 since Los Angeles’ 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros in 2017 averaged 15.33 million. The game had a 19.1 rating and 58 share in Los Angeles and 13.2 rating and 37 share in New York.

The first game of the American League Championship Series on Monday night between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians saw an uptick of 4% from 2023, grossing 3.9 million viewers, according to a TNT Sports spokesperson. The championship series gains come right after four successful league division series for MLB and its broadcast partners. The American League Division Series averaged 3 million viewers, a more than 20% increase from 2023, according to TNT Sports. Viewership for the National League Division Series rose too, with game four in each series climbing from 2022. The Yankees have a 2-0 game lead against the Guardians, and the Mets-Dodgers series is tied at 1-1.

Diamond Sports said in the filing that if it is able to emerge from bankruptcy protection, FanDuel will be a "long-term naming rights partner." However, umpires ruled the ball never hit his foot and Altuve was subsequently thrown out at first base. The MLB investigation found that 25 of those bets included Pirates games while Marcano was assigned to the Major League club. Major League Baseball permanently banned San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano on Tuesday for placing hundreds of bets on baseball, including wagers on the Pittsburgh Pirates when he was a member of the team last season. MLB’s Department of Investigations found Marcano placed 387 baseball bets, including 231 MLB-related bets, through a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023, the league said. The Department of Investigations found all four players placed MLB-related bets while in the minors. MLB said a legal sports betting operator informed the league in March that it had “identified past baseball betting activity” from accounts connected to multiple players. He placed 29 baseball bets, including 28 MLB-related bets and one parlay bet on college baseball games in 2021 and 2022, the league said.

CNN —Major League Baseball fans had an unexpected buzz on Tuesday after a swarm of bees delayed the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Los Angeles Dodgers game for around two hours. With no end in sight to the snafu, the call went out to bee wrangler Matt Hilton, who was summoned from his son’s baseball game to the big leagues to tackle the problem. PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks and veteran slugger Randal Grichuk agreed Saturday on a $2 million, one-year contract with a mutual option for 2025, a person with direct knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Saturday because the deal, which was first reported by ESPN, hadn't been officially announced. Grichuk will be paid $1.5 million this season and would make $6 million in 2025, or the D-backs could pay a $500,000 buyout. The 32-year-old Grichuk has 191 career homers with the Cardinals, Blue Jays, Rockies and Angels. He split time between the Rockies and Angels last season, hitting .267 with 16 homers.

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired slugger Eugenio Suárez on Wednesday from the Seattle Mariners for reliever Carlos Vargas and catcher Seby Zavala, according to a person familiar with the deal. He fills a need for the D-backs at third base, which was manned mostly by Evan Longoria and Emmanuel Rivera last season. He hit .232 with 22 homers and 96 RBIs for the Mariners last season, playing third base and designated hitter. MILWAUKEE (AP) — After spending the last eight seasons as Craig Counsell’s bench coach, Pat Murphy is taking over for his former boss as the Milwaukee Brewers’ manager. Counsell took over as the Brewers’ manager when Ron Roenicke was fired in 2015. He hired Murphy as his bench coach following that 2015 season. When the Padres hired Andy Green as their full-time manager after the 2015 season, Murphy joined Counsell’s staff in Milwaukee.
