DALLAS (AP) — American Airlines posted a $545 million loss for the third quarter as revenue was flat with last summer and costs rose, especially to cover a new contract with its pilots. American Airlines Group Inc., based in Fort Worth, said earnings excluding special items worked out to 38 cents per share. Labor costs at American jumped 17%, an increase of nearly $600 million, which was roughly offset by lower fuel prices than a year ago. There are already concerns over rising costs for airlines as fuel prices surge at the same time that travel has begun to slow. Fuel prices are still lower than they were last year, but the loss at American could add to anxiety over burdensome costs across the industry.

REUTERS/Angus Mordant/File PhotoAug 1 (Reuters) - Shale producers Pioneer Natural Resources Co (PXD.N) and Devon Energy Corp (DVN.N) on Tuesday tightened budgets and warned of lower drilling and completions activity in coming months after a drop in oil and gas prices slashed their second-quarter profits. U.S. shale producers have been forced to reduce the number of rigs in operation and delay well completions as profits have fallen from bumper 2022 levels after crude prices eased from multi-year highs. Pioneer, a top producer in the Permian shale basin, cut its 2023 budget, including for drilling and completions, by $125 million to a range of $4.375 billion to $4.575 billion. Devon, which operates in Permian's Delaware basin, forecast capital spending of about $900 million in the third quarter, less than in the second quarter, after one temporary fracking crew was dropped from the basin.

But travel patterns are shifting so often, partly due to work-life changes wrought by the pandemic, that airlines must constantly adapt on booking plane seats and remain cautious in forecasting demand and revenue. American Airlines (AAL.O) Chief Financial Officer Devon May attributed the challenge to the difficulty in forecasting demand. Worries about future demand were a reason American Airlines' stock fell 6% on Thursday even after it raised its full-year earnings forecast. It was a risky bet as booking data from the previous quarter had shown customers were booking trips well in advance. Delta said Southern Europe's summer travel season is now longer than it used to be, prompting the airline to adjust its network.
