Lufthansa logo is seen displayed in this illustration taken, May 3, 2022. Lufthansa rival IAG (ICAG.L) last month said it was "mindful" of uncertainty in the wider economy, even as it reported consensus-beating quarterly profit, and Ryanair (RYA.I) was cautious on demand for the rest of 2023. In April to June, Lufthansa's adjusted earnings before interest and tax nearly tripled to 1.09 billion euros ($1.19 billion), slightly above consensus for 1.04 billion, from 341 million a year earlier. For the full year 2023, it now expects adjusted EBIT to come to more than 2.6 billion euros, having previously forecast a significant increase from last year's 1.5 billion. Global airlines grasp at the 100% recovery
  + stars: | 2023-06-21 | by ( Thomas Shum | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
HONG KONG, June 21 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Global airlines are setting drawn out timelines to a full recovery. Some carriers, particularly in Asia, think they will only fly at or over pre-pandemic capacity levels in 2024 or later. Airlines didn’t rehire quickly enough to support the sudden recovery in demand and are now overpromising and underdelivering. Asian hub carriers like $16.5 billion Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI) are particularly strained. Singapore Airlines, for example, posted a record net profit of S$2.2 billion ($1.6 billion) for the financial year ended March.

Lufthansa sale is ironic end to Italy airline saga
  + stars: | 2023-05-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
MILAN, May 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Italy’s epic airline soap opera has found a paradoxical end. After multiple sale attempts by Italian governments of all political leanings, plus over 10 billion euros of wasted state support, it’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni – an avowed nationalist – who is cutting the umbilical cord with the country’s state-owned national carrier. The state will inject 250 million euros of equity in ITA before Lufthansa buys its initial minority stake. At 0.3 times projected 2023 revenue of 2.5 billion euros, the overall price tag is cheaper than the 0.5 times Lufthansa currently trades at, and also than the 1 billion euro-plus levels mooted last year. But Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr is still scooping up a supposed national treasure at an undemanding price.

SummarySummary Companies Sees strong demand for summer travelConfirms 2023 outlookQ1 adj EBIT loss 273 mln euros, in line with consensusQ1 revenues up 40% at 7.02 bln eurosFRANKFURT, May 3 (Reuters) - German airline group Deutsche Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) said it expected strong demand for holiday travel this summer to fill seats on its planes and help it reach its full-year targets. "The continuously strong demand gives us confidence for the coming months," finance chief Remco Steenbergen said on Wednesday. Lufthansa said it still expects to post a significant year-on-year improvement in adjusted earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) for the full year 2023. For the first quarter, it posted an adjusted EBIT loss of 273 million euros ($300.96 million), improved from a 577 million loss in the year-earlier period and broadly in line with analyst consensus for 279 million. Revenues jumped 40% to 7.02 billion euros in the three months through March, though the figure fell short of consensus for 7.57 billion.
Lufthansa wants to expand in Italy because of its importance as one of Europe’s biggest economies and most popular vacation destinations. Germany’s Deutsche Lufthansa AG said it had submitted a bid to buy a stake in ITA Airways, the Italian carrier formerly known as Alitalia, in a bet on the continued recovery in air travel. Lufthansa said Wednesday it was seeking exclusive talks with the Italian government to initially acquire a minority stake in ITA Airways, with an option to buy the remaining shares at a later date. The move comes after a consortium including Air France-KLM Group and Delta Air Lines Inc. failed to reach a deal to buy a stake in ITA after entering talks last year.
Startups Want to Help Airlines Prevent Tech Meltdowns

Airlines should take advantage of new cloud-based tools, industry consultants said, to help prevent the recent snafus brought on by the use of antiquated and siloed technology at Southwest Airlines Co. and the Federal Aviation Administration. Photo: JIM VONDRUSKA/REUTERSSanta Clara, Calif.-based Couchbase Inc., founded in 2011, said it helped United Airlines Holdings Inc. modernize its operations by providing a cloud-based database for its crew-scheduling software. United declined to comment on its operations technology. Airlines generate a massive amount of data every year from their aircraft, passengers, suppliers and internal operations. Gurobi Optimization LLC, a company that develops mathematical-optimization software for industries including aviation, said it provides optimization technology for airlines such as Air France-KLM.

ZURICH, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Cabin crew at airline SWISS will get pay rises of 4% to 18% under a new five-year contract agreed at the unit of Deutsche Lufthansa (LHAG.DE), the two sides said on Thursday. ZURICH, April 11 (Reuters) - German logistics entrepreneur Klaus-Michael Kuehne has increased his stake in Germany's flag carrier Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) to 10%, Kuehne Holding AG said in a statement on Monday. Kuehne, 84, had earlier boosted his stake in Lufthansa to 5% about a month ago, becoming the airline's second-biggest shareholder behind the German government, according to Refinitiv data. Kuehne Holding AG has acquired a stake of 10% in Deutsche Lufthansa AG on the market via a wholly owned German subsidiary, the holding company owned by Klaus-Michael Kuehne said. "The investment in Deutsche Lufthansa represents an excellent rounding off of the existing portfolio, in which logistical knowhow is bundled through various independent holdings," Kuehne was quoted as saying in the statement. The German billionaire is also the controlling shareholder of Swiss logistics firm Kuehne & Nagel (KNIN.S) and has a 30% stake in container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd AG (HLAG.DE).
