Atlanta Braves pitcher Chris Sale and Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal won the Cy Young Award for the best pitchers in their respective leagues, MLB announced Tuesday. Sale won the National League honor while Skubal won the American League’s. Both Sale and Skubal won their respective league’s Triple Crown in 2024, leading the NL and AL in wins, ERA and strikeouts. CNN —The New York Yankees clinched an American League Championship Series (ALCS) spot on Thursday night with a 3-1 win over the Kansas City Royals which saw them take the American League Division Series (ALDS) by the same score. Starter Gerrit Cole was the game’s dominant force, giving up just one run and six hits across seven innings, striking out four. The victory sees New York advance to the 19th Championship Series in its history, four more than any other franchise. Kansas City, meanwhile, has now lost its last nine games at Kauffman Stadium. It was the closest Kansas City would come, Aaron Judge recording the final out in the ninth to send New York through.

The Houston Astros will not appear in the American League Championship Series for the first time since 2016 after being eliminated by the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. Not including the pandemic-shortened 2020 year, that’s the fewest number of wins the Astros have had since missing the postseason entirely in 2016. From 2017-23, not only did Houston appear in the ALCS every year, it made the World Series four times, winning twice and losing twice. The Astros’ run of championship league series appearances came under the specter of one of Major League Baseball’s most notorious scandals. The Astros were revealed to be using the sign-stealing system from as early as 2016 into the 2018 season — which encompassed their 2017 World Series win.

Diamond Sports — the owner of Bally Sports-branded regional sports networks — said Wednesday that it plans to drop all MLB teams from its channels except for the Atlanta Braves. A Diamond attorney made the comments before a U.S. bankruptcy judge on Wednesday as part of an update on the company's ongoing bankruptcy process and attempt at finalizing a reorganization plan. Some of those teams were already slated to see their contracts end this season, and some contracts are not being determined by the bankruptcy process, a Diamond spokesperson said. "To be clear, rejecting these teams is not our preferred path," Diamond attorney Andrew Goldman said on Wednesday. Goldman said Diamond had warned the league about this outcome in August, noting it was a possibility if the MLB rejected Diamond's latest proposal.

WASHINGTON — The Harris campaign is launching its largest effort yet to reach Latino voters, with new spending on Spanish-language radio and an organizing push around boxing matches and baseball games as National Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off this weekend. Vice President Kamala Harris will address the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s annual conference on Wednesday, according to a senior campaign official, and Minnesota Gov. Diamond Sports — the owner of Bally Sports-branded regional sports networks — reached a deal with Comcast on Monday that will see its networks go live for cable customers on Aug. 1. Pay TV companies such as Comcast have been bleeding customers in recent years as customers opt for cheaper streaming options. Comcast said last week it lost 419,000 domestic cable customers during the second quarter and now has roughly 13.2 million subscribers in total. Negotiations between Comcast and Bally Sports' operator Diamond Sports Group, which has been under bankruptcy protection since last year, broke down following a dispute over terms. Pay-TV distributors have been losing customers at a fast clip in recent years as customers opt for cheaper streaming options. Comcast had more than 13.6 million pay-TV customers as of March 31, after losing 487,000 subscribers during the first quarter. Some regional sports networks have begun offering streaming options to customers at a price point that doesn't upend the pay-TV model. In addition to Comcast, Diamond has held negotiations in recent weeks with Charter Communications — which provides pay-TV services under the Spectrum brand — DirecTV and Cox Communications.

It turns out that I undersold Greenberg; he was one of the greatest hitters of all time and gives Sandy Koufax a run at being the greatest Jewish baseball player of all time. By that time, at age 35, he was well past most baseball players’ prime. The fact that Greenberg was a hero to young Jewish baseball fans (like my father), a great American and incredible human being is not under dispute. Greenberg remains one of only 10 baseball players to ever hit 58 home runs in a single season. Greenberg ranks 62nd among every position player on this metric since major league baseball began way back in the 1870s, according to Baseball-Reference (and different outlets compute WAR7 slightly differently).

Frank Howard, a four-time All-Star who slugged 382 home runs during a lengthy major league career that included a World Series title with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1963, has died. A spokesperson for the Washington Nationals said the team was informed of Howard's death by his family Monday. “Growing up a baseball fan in Washington D.C., Frank Howard was my hero,” Nationals owner Mark Lerner said in a statement. “We didn’t score a whole lot of runs, and it was on his back a lot of times to score a few runs,” Bosman said. “I don’t think I saw him angry more than two or three times,” Bosman said.
