In the middle of an answer, Dimon added: "By the way, I'd also make Washington, DC, go back to work. Last year, the Biden Administration pushed for federal employees to return to in-person office work. Many federal workers have indeed returned to the office for at least part of the week. He also said, however, that employees who don't like their RTO policy can find jobs elsewhere, according to The Economist.

Someone like Routh was quite easy to meet in Ukraine in the opening months of Russia’s full-scale war in 2022. But already, Moscow’s prolific echo chambers have begun to fashion a narrative in which US support for Ukraine is somehow extremist. People stand near the sports complex of a university after Russian missile attacks in Kyiv, Ukraine, on September 2. The clamor of support for Ukraine to receive US permission to fire longer-range US-supplied missiles at targets deeper inside Russian territory had been growing. The sudden insertion of a wayward extremist like Routh is a loud, confusing wild card, at a time when support for Ukraine urgently needed a calm and balanced voice.

Routh became animated when writing about Trump, and he frequently weighed in on US and global current events on social media. He even commented on the first assassination attempt on Trump, when the former president was wounded by a gunshot during a rally in Pennsylvania in July. According to Cernea, Routh described Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine as a “black and white… good versus evil” conflict. Hawaiian business owner Saili Levi told CNN he had paid Routh $3,800 up front to build a trailer for his business. Levi said when he asked Routh to improve the work via email, Routh ranted at him.

Russia announced the expulsions hours before British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House, a crucial step towards winning the go-ahead for Kyiv to use long-range missiles against targets in Russia. Neither Biden nor Starmer addressed long-range missiles in brief comments in front of reporters. Sources say the meeting is another step in talks to allow Ukraine to use Western long-range missiles against targets in Russia, something Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been demanding for months. The six UK diplomats were named on Russian state TV, which also showed photographs of them. The FSB said Russia would ask other British diplomats to go home early if they were found to be engaged in similar activity.

The third-quarter estimated tax deadline for 2024 is Sept. 16, and skipping a payment could trigger a penalty, according to the IRS. Some filers also need estimated payments if they haven’t withheld enough taxes from a full-time or part-time job. Estimated payments can help avoid “refund disappointment or balance due shock,” said Mark Steber, chief tax information officer of Jackson Hewitt. For 2024, the quarterly estimated tax deadlines are April 15, June 17, Sept. 16 and Jan. 15, 2025. After eight years of threatening to repeal the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare, former President Donald Trump still doesn’t have a comprehensive plan to replace it. People in the U.S. pay roughly twice as much for health care than any other nation on earth. But is it feasible to create a new health care law that reduces the escalating costs? “Right now, Obamacare is the status quo in health care,” said Larry Levitt, executive vice president of health policy at KFF, a nonprofit group that researches health policy issues. Harris has committed to extending the subsidies; Trump has remained silent.

Stern told KABC the "odd" order did raise suspicion, largely because her bakery primarily specializes in occasion cakes and cookies with edible flowers, not cupcakes. Stern told the outlet the bank informed her that if the funds cleared, which they later did, the check was probably legitimate. "They said, 'Oh, it's been cited as a counterfeit check,'" Stern told the outlet. Stern told KABC the experience left her feeling "disheartened about humanity."

Musk could "sacrifice some of the short-term interest in Tesla," Ward added, "if it'll satisfy the long-term interests of his ambitions." Musk and Tesla didn't respond to requests from Reuters for comment. The growing bond between Trump and Musk could be on display Monday night, when the Tesla boss is scheduled to interview the Republican candidate on X, Musk's social media platform. It's unclear exactly what ambitions Musk could seek to advance through his increasingly vocal rejection of progressive platforms – from EV subsidies to identity politics. A Reuters review of Congressional lobbying records – and Tesla's public comments to federal and state regulators – shows that the company has continued working to shape public policy in favor of such benefits.

Martin S. Indyk, a diplomat, author and foreign-policy thinker who spent decades trying to solve the riddle of Middle East peace, twice as the United States ambassador to Israel and later as a special envoy for President Barack Obama, died on Thursday at his home in New Fairfield, Conn. An Australian-bred academic with a quick wit, blunt manner and pro-Israel pedigree, Mr. Indyk cut an unconventional figure in the State Department of the 1990s. But he propelled himself to the heart of America’s efforts to make peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. In 2013, he shuttled from one side to the other as Mr. Obama’s emissary. As news of the shooting was still breaking, notable figures were quick to question the Secret Service and its leadership following the shooting. Matt Shoemaker, a former intelligence officer at the Defense Intelligence Agency, went as far as calling the shooting a "major failure" of the Secret Service. Representatives for the Secret Service were not present at the press conference to respond to questions about the incident. Trump's campaign, as well as the Republican National Committee, have indicated the party's planned convention in Milwaukee this week will proceed following the rally shooting.

Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Danny Werfel testifies before the House Appropriations Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, May 7, 2024. The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the IRS on Thursday announced what they called a "major milestone" of collecting more than $1 billion in tax debt from high-income individuals over the past year. "The IRS has collected $1 billion from millionaires and shown that it can successfully launch strategic new initiatives and achieve the greatest return on investment," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told reporters during a press call. The infusion of IRS funding, enacted via the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, still has its critics, however, particularly among congressional Republicans. "During the past decade, the IRS didn't have the resources or staffing to pursue high-income earners who our compliance team knew owed taxes," IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said during the press call.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury and IRS on Friday released final tax reporting rules for digital asset brokers — and crypto investors have limited time to prepare, experts say. Mandatory yearly reporting will phase in starting in 2026, with digital currency brokers required to cover gross proceeds from sales in 2025 via Form 1099-DA. In 2027, brokers must include cost basis, or purchase price, for certain digital asset sales for 2026. "These regulations are an important part of the larger effort on high-income individual tax compliance," IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in a statement. The new IRS regulations come roughly four months after the agency hired two former crypto executives to improve digital currency service, reporting, compliance and enforcement programs.

Facebook Groups are a popular forum for recruiting shadow stand-ins, providing a two-sided marketplace where workers and providers can connect to one another. "It required a lot of micromanaging," said a backend engineer in Pennsylvania who hired shadow stand-ins to help him juggle multiple jobs. Pay rates for shadow stand-ins are "definitely more than what people earn in their regular payday, that's for sure," he said.

The pardon won’t automatically change the record of convicted veterans, but it will allow them to apply for a certificate that will help them receive withheld benefits. “Our nation’s service members stand on the frontlines of freedom, and risk their lives in order to defend our country. Despite their courage and great sacrifice, thousands of LGBTQI+ service members were forced out of the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” Biden said. How primordial black holes could explain dark matter

The late physicist Stephen Hawking hypothesized that dark matter could be hiding in black holes formed during the big bang. “We were making use of Stephen Hawking’s famous calculations about black holes, especially his important result about the radiation that black holes emit,” Kaiser said. This is not to say dark matter is not a particle, or that it’s for sure black holes. “The next generation of gravitational detectors could catch a glimpse of the small-mass black holes — an exotic state of matter that was an unexpected byproduct of the more mundane black holes that could explain dark matter today.”Many forms of dark matterWhat does this mean for the ongoing experiments that are trying to detect dark matter, such as the LZ Dark Matter Experiment in South Dakota? And those indeed might pick up some of the stray signals from the very violent formation process of primordial black holes.”There’s also the possibility that primordial black holes are just a fraction of the dark matter, Alonso-Monsalve added.

IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel testifies before the House Appropriations Committee in Washington, D.C., on May 7, 2024. The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the IRS on Monday unveiled a plan to "close a major tax loophole" used by large, complex partnerships, which could raise more than an estimated $50 billion in tax revenue over the next 10 years. "These tax shelters allow wealthy taxpayers to avoid paying what they owe," IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel told reporters on a press call Friday. They also released a revenue ruling on related-party partnership transactions involving basis shifting without "economic substance" for the parties or "substantial business purpose." The plan builds on ongoing IRS efforts to increase audits on the wealthiest taxpayers, large corporations and complex partnerships.
