Around 8 in 10 people infected with West Nile virus don’t show symptoms. These symptoms can often be confused with those of other viruses, so the majority of West Nile cases are never diagnosed. The CDC’s tally for West Nile cases this year is likely an undercount, since several states have reported additional human cases in recent weeks. Raman said he’s worried about more West Nile transmission during monsoon season in the Las Vegas area, which is expected to start soon. The county announced in late June that one person, a blood donor, had tested positive for West Nile virus.

Three cases of malaria spread locally have been identified in Texas and Florida. But in Texas, the Department of State Health Services confirmed Friday that a person working outdoors in Cameron County, Texas, contracted malaria locally. According to the DSHS, although Texas sees about 120 malaria cases a year from international travelers, the last locally acquired case in Texas was detected in 1994. About 1,400 miles away in Sarasota County, Florida, however, two more cases of locally transmitted malaria infections have been identified this year — one in May and one in June. "And I think we should be funding more public health responses."

CNN —Five Texas residents became ill with suspected cases of fungal meningitis after traveling to Matamoros, Mexico, for surgery, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. In a travel advisory, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged patients to cancel certain procedures in Matamoros, Mexico. Health officials are investigating whether the cases are linked and whether there are more infections. In this aerial photo, a border fence divides the cities of Brownsville, Texas, and Matamoros, Mexico. “It is very important that people who have recently had medical procedures in Mexico monitor themselves for symptoms of meningitis,” said DSHS Commissioner Dr. Jennifer Shuford.
