Former President Donald Trump has won Georgia, NBC News projects, notching a victory in a key battleground state that his campaign focused on as a must-win after he narrowly lost it in 2020. Biden was the first Democrat to win the state since Bill Clinton in 1992. Trump visited Georgia six times this year, holding rallies in Rome, Savannah and Atlanta. Brian Kemp, who began appearing with him toward the end of the election cycle after having distancing himself from Trump amid his criticisms of the state election process. Unlike four years ago, when exit polls showed Biden winning independents by 53% to 44% in Georgia, Trump appears to be winning independent voters this time, according to the latest data early Wednesday.

WASHINGTON — Americans are poised to elect a new Congress, with control of both chambers at stake as every seat in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate is up before voters on Election Day. Republicans favored to win the SenateIn the Senate, Democrats currently have a 51-49 edge, but Republicans are favored to capture the majority. They’re all but guaranteed to win an open seat in ruby-red West Virginia, with Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Manchin retiring. If Harris wins, Republicans will need one more seat in addition to West Virginia to capture the Senate. Abortion is the most-mentioned topic in Democratic closing ads, followed by immigration, health care, bipartisanship, and taxation, according to an analysis of more than 300 TV ads from candidates and joint ads they ran with party committees. The analysis looked at ads, tracked by AdImpact, that aired Wednesday in competitive House and Senate races. Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., sharply criticized other politicians on Tuesday for making public comments about what the Federal Reserve should do with its interest rate policy. McHenry, the outgoing chair of the House Financial Services Committee, said it was an '"outrage" that some politicians are publicly lobbying the central bank about rate cuts. "Senators that are trying to direct the Fed on rate policy are really demeaning their role. McHenry's comments came one day before the U.S. central bank is widely expected to start cutting interest rates for the first time since 2020. But the move likely wouldn’t help many tipped workers, largely because a sizable share don’t earn enough to pay federal income taxes, experts say. Harris would couple her plan to eliminate taxes on tips with a push for Congress to raise the minimum wage, a Harris campaign official said. Many states and municipalities have higher minimum wages and minimum tipped wages, while some states have eliminated lower minimum wages for tipped workers. Just excluding tips from federal income taxes could reduce revenues by at least $107 billion over 10 years, according to the Tax Foundation. Just getting rid of federal income taxes on tips would lead to a loss of about half that size.

CNN —During the first whirlwind week of her second presidential campaign, Kamala Harris locked up the support of the Democratic Party, recruited thousands of volunteers and hauled in $200 million in donations. The next test of Harris’ appeal will take place Tuesday in Georgia, where her campaign is hosting an Atlanta rally. “The groundswell of support around the vice president is real and it is meaningful,” Dan Kanninen, Harris’ battleground state director, told reporters Monday. “Tomorrow, Vice President Harris’ visit will highlight her brighter vision for the future, where our freedoms are protected and every American has a fair shot. CNN —The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a Trump-era tax on overseas investments, rejecting an argument from a Washington state couple in a case that could have jeopardized existing tax provisions and torpedoed Democratic talk of a wealth tax. Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote the majority opinion and Justice Clarence Thomas wrote a dissent. In reading his opinion from the bench, Kavanaugh repeatedly stressed that the opinion was “narrow” and did not implicate the raging debate over a wealth tax. “Those are potential issues for another day, and we do not address or resolve any of those issues here,” Kavanaugh wrote in Thursday’s opinion. CNN —Senate Republicans voted Wednesday to block a bill put forward by Democrats that would guarantee access to contraception nationwide, as Democrats seek to highlight the issue in the run up to November’s elections. Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins crossed over to vote with Democrats in favor of advancing the bill. Katie Britt and Ted Cruz introduced a bill called the IVF Protection Act in May, and Republican Sen. Joni Ernst has put forward a separate bill to promote access to contraception. “We will have an alternative that will make very clear that Republicans are for contraception,” Senate GOP Whip John Thune said. Ahead of the vote on the Democrat-led bill, Ernst attempted to pass her alternative contraception bill by unanimous consent, but the request was blocked by Democrats.
