CNN —Donald Trump believes presidents have almost absolute power. In his second term, there will be few political or legal restraints to check him. It’s not guaranteed that just because Trump has massive power he will spurn constitutional checks and balances. No other president has come into office armed with a Supreme Court ruling that grants significant immunity to presidents for official acts. Attempts to prosecute Trump’s political foes on spurious grounds, meanwhile, could theoretically see mass resignations of Justice Department staff.

Democratic House and Senate candidates raised eye-popping sums from July through September, according to new reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. Democrats outraised Republicans in all 11 competitive Senate races and in all but one of the 26 “toss-up” House races. Three Senate Democratic candidates — Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, Maryland’s Angela Alsobrooks and Michigan Rep. Elissa Slotkin — raised more than four times as much as their Republican opponents during that period. Senate Democratic candidates spent a combined $244 million to Republicans’ $91.5 million. And House Democratic candidates in races rated as “toss-ups” or “leaning” toward one party spent $132 million to Republicans’ $61.6 million.

Obama acolytes have spent the last eight years rationalizing Trump as the last gasp backlash to the Democrat and his presidency. While most of the party leaders Harris called that Sunday afternoon, including Bill Clinton, and immediately pledged support, Obama held off. It should put a damper on just how much we should expect the next president to accomplish, especially if the divide is between the House and the White House. There’s a big difference in just how divided government becomes, depending on whether the House and the White House are controlled by the same party or different parties. Two words send chills down the spine of any presidents who find the “other” party in control of the House: subpoena power. Both Trump and Joe Biden saw the second halves of their terms (after they lost control of the House) essentially paralyzed by an oppositional House. First, because California House races will determine overall House control, it could take as much as two or three weeks before we know the makeup of Congress in 2025 for sure.

Trump's proposals include eliminating taxes on tips and overtime, extending the 2017 tax cuts for individuals, implementing higher tariffs on imported goods, and reducing the corporate tax rate. Meanwhile, the Tax Policy Center has found that the policies would bring down post-tax incomes by $1,800 in 2025. Joe Hughes, a senior analyst on federal tax policy at ITEP, previously told BI that high-wage workers could take advantage of Trump's proposals to make more money. Ultimately, though, any tax proposals would need buy-in from the House and Senate.

With Harris at the top of the ticket, Democrats now see a chance to refocus voters on the issue and restore their margins among the abortion rights voters who had notably drifted away from Biden. In both the 2020 and 2022 campaigns, voters who backed legal abortion provided overwhelming support to Biden and other Democratic candidates. Across all of those battleground states, Biden this year was performing well below that level with voters who support legal abortion, polls have found. Those abortion rights voters also split about evenly on whether Biden or Trump was better for the economy. “Many of them aren’t single issue abortion voters; they are worried about the economy and inflation, they are worried about immigration,” McLaughlin said.

"There is no reason why members of Congress ought to be profiting off of the information that only they get." Wednesday's amendment to an existing stock trading ban bill would immediately forbid members of Congress, the president and the vice president from purchasing stocks and other covered investments.
