Following the tour, Harris will headline a solo rally in Savannah, Georgia. The southern Georgia bus tour is expected to echo the campaign’s bus tour of western Pennsylvania earlier this month, which included stops at a local campaign field office, firehouse and high school football practice. We have hosted more than 500 events in the region since May 31,” Harris-Walz Georgia campaign spokesperson Adelaide Bullock said. “Black voters are the key to winning Georgia. “The Vice President’s advantages with young voters, Black voters, and Latino voters will be important to our multiple pathways to 270 electoral votes,” Dillon wrote in a recent memo.

Harris’ viewership victory amounted to a blow for Trump, who is famously obsessed with television ratings and the size of his crowds. The boost in viewership was also seen at ABC with 4.2 million viewers, and CNN with 3.9 million. Donald J. Trump’s political endurance this year has been attributed in part to voters’ faded memories about why they denied him a second term four years ago. The former president is doing his best to remind them. Despite a carefully scripted week of campaign events aimed at counterprogramming the Democratic National Convention, Mr. Trump undercut much of his messaging with a series of off-the-cuff remarks, rants and blunders that threatened to stoke the kind of Republican anxiety he has spent much of the past month trying to tamp down. On Monday in Pennsylvania, he struggled to clarify a previous comment that he believed the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which honors civilians, was “much better” than the Medal of Honor given to military members. On Tuesday in Michigan, he claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris had won the Democratic nomination after a “vicious, violent overthrow of a president" and called Chicago, which hosted the Democratic convention, “a war zone that’s worse than Afghanistan.”

The closing night of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday drew about 26.2 million TV viewers, narrowly outpacing the Republican National Convention's final night, according to data from the media measurement company Nielsen. The convention's final night aired across 15 television networks and drew about 820,000 more viewers than the estimated 25.4 million people who watched the final night of the Republican event, Nielsen reported. The first night of the Republican convention drew an estimated 18.13 million viewers, compared to around 20 million viewers on the DNC's opening night, according to Nielsen. The DNC's closing night exceeded viewership for the convention’s final night four years ago, when 24.6 million viewers tuned in across cable and TV for President Joe Biden’s speech. In 2016, 30 million viewers tuned in for the final night of the 2016 Democratic convention.

Still, the initial conservations started earlier, about a week before the Republican convention, with right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson connecting Trump Jr. with Kennedy. Donald Trump’s campaign is expecting that Vice President Kamala Harris will get a “bump” coming out of the Democratic National Convention but generally does not see the week-long event changing the overall trajectory of the race. At the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Rep. Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y., was met with thunderous applause as he proudly introduced transgender advocate Sarah McBride. “She is right now the first trans person ever to address a national convention,” Maloney boasted. But at this year’s Democratic convention in Chicago, trans people were notably absent from the stage. To some trans Americans, the omission did not go unnoticed. Harris, who has actively supported gay rights throughout her career, is also seen by advocates as having one of the most, if not the most, LGBTQ-friendly policy record of any presidential candidate.

For many woman of color, particularly those who have run for office and been in the political spotlight, it’s a familiar challenge. In interviews and convention speeches, Black women leaders said the Harris campaign should continue to avoid engaging directly with personal attacks. Kamala Harris had a message for America about Donald Trump and JD Vance on Thursday night. “Simply put, they are out of their minds,” she said to cheers from thousands of Democratic convention delegates in United Center. She was talking about their draconian abortion stances but it could have applied to so much more. Well, we trust women.”Harris has to prove that she is a woman America can trust, as she tries to get the country to do something it has never done before: elect a woman as president. She promised that she would “proudly” sign a bill restoring abortion rights across America.

The sight at the Democratic convention on Wednesday night of Tim Walz’s 17-year-old son leaping to his feet, with streaming eyes, a hand to his chest with a cry of “That’s my Dad” was heart piercing. Gus Walz has, according to his parents, a nonverbal learning disorder, A.D.H.D. One of the joys of my life in the social churn of New York is living with a son whose inability to read the room makes him incapable of telling anything but the truth. Todd Heisler/The New York TimesIn One Image The Next Generation By Todd Heisler with Tim BalkVice President Kamala Harris took the stage on Thursday night to accept her party’s nomination, capping a Democratic convention unlike any other in modern history. Just four weeks after President Biden dropped out of the presidential race and gave his support to Ms. Harris, she set out to introduce herself to the American public. As Ms. Harris detailed her mother’s influence on her own life, her great-niece Amara, 8, in a pink pantsuit and pigtails, watched from the front row of the crowded convention hall. Ms. Harris emphasized her experience, her patriotism and the urgency of the moment. But for young women like Amara, the significance of the moment was unmistakable.

Former President Donald J. Trump was watching television on Thursday night and he did not like what he saw. 5 Takeaways From the Democratic Convention

A month and a day after Democrats made a change, Kamala Harris has the party faithful believing. The vice president’s speech on Thursday capped an ebullient four-day convention in Chicago that showcased the party’s reinvigorated chances against Donald J. Trump in the wake of President Biden’s decision to step aside. Before a convention hall packed with supporters in symbolic suffragette white, Ms. Harris became the second woman to formally accept the Democratic Party’s nomination as she tries to break through as the nation’s first female president. Not that she talked about that. Instead, Ms. Harris wrapped herself in the language of patriotism and American exceptionalism, unspooling the story of her upbringing by a single mother to present herself as a leader who understands the strains and aspirations of the middle class.

Every convention has its highlights and low points, and the hastily revised Democratic convention was no exception. More than 100 speakers took the stage at the United Center in Chicago over four nights, and their speaking abilities ranged from excellent to, well, kind of bumbling. Here are some of the moments we will remember, and others we are hoping to forget. Vice President Kamala Harris, assuring that she’s no pushover: “As commander in chief, I will ensure America always has the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world.”Least convincing denial. President Biden: “All this talk about how I am angry at the people who said I should step down, it is not true.”

If the Republican convention’s message for America last month had to fit on a bumper sticker, it would read, “Trump is God.” Delegates deified him relentlessly as the risen Trump after the assassination attempt. They told me over and over that he was spared to save the country with his re-election. Only on the final night did Donald Trump come crashing down to earth with his nomination speech. The most divisive man in America was suddenly getting a measure of good will from skeptical voters after he was nearly killed. The good news for Democrats is that Harris seems to understand this.

This digital ad posted by Republican Senate candidate Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania, about a week before Biden eventually dropped his bid, was the blueprint. Almost immediately, Democrats saw a surge of support — mostly from disillusioned Democratic voters. As of this writing, it’s now Republicans in battleground states and districts who are begging their nominee to change course. As for the GOP, Trump and his allies have done everything they can to mold the GOP in Trump’s image, and anyone who doesn’t share that view has essentially been purged. Of course, the real challenge for both Republicans will be figuring out how to navigate Trump’s appearances in their respective states.

The pair’s first rally shortly after Walz was announced as Harris’ running mate was in Philadelphia, the commonwealth’s largest city, and they embarked on a dayslong tour of battleground states shortly after. Sunday’s tour, which is scheduled to begin in Pittsburgh, will mark the first time that Harris, Walz and their respective spouses – second gentleman Doug Emhoff and Minnesota first lady Gwen Walz – will appear on the campaign trail together. The campaign has 36 coordinated offices and 300 staffers in Pennsylvania, which Harris has already visited seven times this year. Seven battleground states have been the focus of more than $212 million in ad spending over that stretch, with Pennsylvania accounting for $70.6 million of that total.

Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. The Harris-Walz rally in Milwaukee would be the latest visit on a tour in which the candidates spoke to crowds of over 10,000 people at five stops in battleground states last week. The campaign has jubilantly pointed to the events’ high energy and Mr. Walz has bragged about the turnout, irritating Mr. Trump to the point that he falsely claimed the Harris crowds were fake. The planned rally on Tuesday would most likely take place before the prime-time speeches in Chicago, where former President Barack Obama is set to be the night’s featured attraction. CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has won enough votes from Democratic delegates to win the party’s nomination for president, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison announced Friday. Delegates began casting virtual ballots for the nomination Thursday, a process that will continue until Monday evening. “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” said Harris, who joined the virtual event. It’s been clear since shortly after President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign and endorsed Harris that the vice president would be the only serious candidate for the nomination. Though voting for the Democratic nomination began and will possibly conclude before Harris announces her running mate, party rules don’t require a separate vote to confirm the nominee for vice president.
