David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital this week revealed a fresh stake in agriculture equipment maker CNH Industrial , and increased its bets on Peloton Interactive and gold in the third quarter. The hedge fund, which Einhorn founded in 1996, disclosed in its latest regulatory filing that it took a roughly $79 million stake in CNH during the latest quarter. Einhorn also increased his holding in Peloton by roughly 40%, bringing his stake in the company to about $45 million. That led him to buy medium-sized stakes in a few value companies and take a larger position in gold. Einhorn added 3.1% to his holding in SPDR Gold Trust in the most recent quarter, bringing it to $51 million.

Value investors believe these companies are undervalued due to temporary issues, market overreactions, or broader economic conditions. The approach is long-term, as value investors wait for the market to recognize the company's actual value, which may take time. On a podcast earlier this year, well-known hedge fund manager David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital lamented that modern-day passive investors pay no attention to "value" of the companies they buy. Outcome Scenarios : If the stock price stays above the strike price, the option expires worthless, allowing the investor to keep the premium as profit. If the stock price falls below the strike price, the option buyer will likely exercise it, obligating the seller to buy the stock at the strike price.

One of the surest bets when the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates was for bond prices to rise while yields came under pressure, but that hasn't played out according to plan. This market, which has defied so many historical patterns, has kept the pressure on bond yields up due to a variety of factors, including more persistent concerns about the federal deficit. But her bigger concern remains on the bond side of the markets. She said investors will be "more wary" given the election rally and the pulling forward of expectations about tax cuts and regulation and expectations they will contribute to growth. But it is in the bond market where investors should expect even more volatility.

"We have increased our bets on inflation," he told CNBC's Leslie Picker at CNBC's Delivering Alpha investor summit on Wednesday. "We will have another inflection up in inflation," he said. "The policy mix being proposed is inflationary and we will see more of that over the next few years." The latest CPI data released Wednesday showed inflation in line with market expectations, at 2.6%. There is an argument for tolerating it and trying to run the economy as hot as possible.

Investors looking for opportunities in this elevated market may want to take a look at U.S. small caps, according to Nuveen's Saira Malik. "That's why we're looking at areas that are cheap — small caps trading at that big discount. Malik views small caps as one of the most attractive areas amid a broad rally that's boosted the major indexes and valuations to new highs. "Deregulation is going to make the world an interesting place, because it could open up more M & A activity, which, again, positive for small caps trading at that deep discount to their counterparts," Malik said. The iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) , which tracks the Russell 2000, is up 8% this month.

Hedge fund investor David Einhorn's cautious stance all year made his performance suffer as he navigated what he believes is the priciest stock market of his career at Greenlight Capital. Einhorn's hedge fund returned just 9% in 2024 through the end of the third quarter, net of fees and expenses. The high-profile investor said he's neither calling the market a bubble nor being outright bearish, but sky-high prices caused him to be conservatively positioned. It is, by many measures, the most expensive stock market that we have seen since the founding of Greenlight," Einhorn said in the latest investor letter last month. Investors will be interested to hear if he's still finding any values.

Icahn Enterprises wins dismissal of investor lawsuit

Carl Icahn's investment company Icahn Enterprises won the dismissal of a lawsuit claiming it artificially inflated its share price by issuing unsustainably high dividends to help the billionaire investor obtain large amounts of personal loans. A spokesman for Icahn Enterprises did not immediately respond to a similar request. The shareholders said Icahn Enterprises' true health became evident as its Auto Parts Plus business went bankrupt, the company slashed its dividend and Icahn renegotiated his loans. He also said Icahn Enterprises' 2021 annual report disclosed Carl Icahn's share pledges, and that there were no allegations that any defendant conducted insider trading. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday celebrated results from CNBC's most recent Delivering Alpha Stock Survey, in which a majority of investors predicted the market had run too high and that a pullback is on the horizon. He told investors to welcome a decline and to raise some cash to buy quality stocks at lower prices. "I think people are right to expect a pullback here," Cramer said. While it's wise to raise some cash to prepare for a pullback, Cramer also suggested riding out some of the turbulence. When investors are always trying to avoid the next pullback, they may end up missing the next rally, he said.

A majority of respondents — 61% — in the latest CNBC Delivering Alpha Stock Survey believe the broader market has run too far, too fast heading into the second quarter and a pullback is near. The S & P 500 is up more than 9% in the first quarter, which would be its best start to a year since 2019. When it comes to investing domestically 26% said the Nasdaq 100 was the best place to be compared to 13% from the S & P 500. That stock is up 245% in a year and 120% in six months far outpacing every other stock in the S & P 500 except for Super Micro Computer . The rest think we're more likely to be in the 5%-to-10% range for an annual return for the S & P in the next decade.

Christie's auction house in New York. Auction house Christie's just sold a painting for more than $100 million, although the artwork, the buyer and the seller were officially kept a secret. In an interview with CNBC, CEO Guillaume Cerutti said Christie's sold a painting in January in a private sale with a price "in excess of $100 million," though the auction house declined to provide details. In a private sale, a work is brought for a possible sale to an auction house, which reaches out to its top clients and brokers a deal. Private sales have surged since the Covid-19 pandemic, as more and more collectors prefer discreet transactions outside the public eye.

Billionaire Citadel CEO Ken Griffin is "actively contemplating" financially supporting former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley in the Republican primary for president. Have a concentrated portfolioHaving a concentrated portfolio means investing in a relatively small number of stocks as opposed to a larger number for the sake of diversity. Buy quality stocksSucceeding with a concentrated portfolio relies on one thing: buying quality stocks. A quality stock is a company that's able to consistently post profits and returns on capital. Apple and Alphabet would be considered consensus quality stocks, and Munger is well known for his fondness of shares of Coca-Cola, another stock traditionally classified as quality. Buy stocks with good management teamsOne element of a company that makes it "quality" is its management team.

Bill Ackman, Pershing Square Capital Management CEO, speaking at the Delivering Alpha conference in NYC on Sept. 28th, 2023. Pershing Square's Bill Ackman revealed Monday he covered his bet against long-term Treasurys, believing that investors may increasingly buy bonds as a safe haven because of growing geopolitical risks, the latest of which being the Israel-Hamas war. The 30-year Treasury yield has risen more than 80 basis points since the end of August, making Ackman's bet profitable. Bond prices move inversely to yields, so Ackman's bet against bonds was, in effect, a gamble on higher rates. The 30-year Treasury yield fell 6 basis points to 5.01% on Monday after Ackman's comments.
