[1/2] Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro speaks during a meeting with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi at the Miraflores Palace, in Caracas, Venezuela June 12, 2023.
It was not immediately known how soon the U.S. might act or how far it could go with sanctions relief.
U.S. sources have also said any relaxation of sanctions would be reversible if Maduro fails to meet his election commitments.
Maduro, president since 2013, is expected to run for re-election but has not yet formalized his candidacy.
The U.S. imposed sanctions on Venezuela to punish Maduro's government following a 2018 election that Washington considered a sham.
