The CDC opened the investigation on Tuesday, initially reporting 49 cases in 10 states – including 10 hospitalizations and one death. It can take weeks to determine whether an illness is part of an outbreak and these numbers were expected to grow. “The FDA is using all available tools to confirm if onions are the source of this outbreak,” an agency spokesperson said in a statement. McDonald’s has taken Quarter Pounders off the menu in about a fifth of its stores.

CNN —In the year and a half following the Supreme Court Dobbs decision that revoked the federal right to an abortion, hundreds more infants died than expected in the United States, new research shows. They found that infant mortality was higher than usual in the US in several months after the Dobbs decision and never dropped to rates that were lower than expected. In the months that infant mortality was higher than expected – October 2022, March 2023 and April 2023 – rates were about 7% higher than typical, leading to an average of 247 more infant deaths in each of those months. She was not involved in the new study, but does research abortion trends in the US. CNN —Coca-Cola has recalled more than 13,000 cases of Minute Maid Zero Sugar Lemonade because the mislabeled cartons actually contained the full-sugar version of the drink, according to a report from the US Food and Drug Administration. One can of Minute Maid Lemonade has 40 grams of sugar, according to product information on Amazon. Consumers can identify the recalled products by looking for codes FEB1725CNA or FEB1725CNB printed on the packaging. In a Phase 3 clinical trial, 99.9% of participants who took a twice-a-year injection of lenacapavir for HIV prevention did not acquire an infection, according to data from drugmaker Gilead Sciences. There were only two cases among 2,180 patients – effectively reducing the risk of HIV infection by 96% and proving 89% more effective than Truvada, a pill taken once a day. Self-managed abortions happen outside of the formal health-care system and without the formal supervision of a doctor or nurse. The new study suggests that self-managing an abortion with abortion pills has become more common, rising from about 18% of attempts pre-Dobbs to 24% post-Dobbs. But experts emphasize that much more research is needed before using the medications off-label for smoking cessation. In a study published Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers tracked the medical records of more than 200,000 people who started medications to treat type 2 diabetes, including nearly 6,000 people using semaglutide medications such as Ozempic. Over the course of a year, people who started using semaglutide were significantly less likely to have medical encounters for tobacco use disorders, prescriptions for medications for smoking cessation or counseling for smoking cessation than those who started other diabetes medications such as insulin and metformin. “A signal like this one cannot be ignored, particularly because of how consequential it could be if, in fact, we can have now a new medication for treating smoking cessation,” she said. CNN —As a youth mental health crisis persists in the US, a new report highlights a significant gap between the level of support that teenagers feel and the amount that parents think their children have. Parents responded to survey questions from trained interviewers, while children responded to survey questions online after their parents gave approval. “This suggests a systematic bias where parents consistently report higher levels of social and emotional support compared with their teenager’s perception, and in doing so may underestimate their teenager’s perceived need for social and emotional support,” the study authors wrote. And the new report shows that teens who did not feel that they always or usually had the support they need were significantly more likely to report a number of poor health effects than those who did feel supported. Two-thirds of teens who did not feel supported reported poor sleep, compared with about a third of those who did feel supported.

Smoking was the leading risk factor by far, the study found, contributing to nearly 1 in 5 cancer cases and nearly a third of cancer deaths. Other key risk factors included excess body weight, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, diet and infections such as HPV. Overall, researchers analyzed 18 modifiable risk factors across 30 types of cancer. In 2019, these lifestyle factors were linked to more than 700,000 new cancer cases and more than 262,000 deaths, the study found. But modifiable risk factors contributed to more than half of new cases for 19 of the 30 types of cancer evaluated.

CNN —People taking tirzepatide injections lost more weight and were more likely to reach specific weight loss targets than those taking semaglutide, according to a new study. But 82% of people taking tirzepatide reached this important clinical benchmark, compared with about 67% of those taking semaglutide. Average weight loss was also consistently higher among those taking tirzepatide over time. And by one year, average weight loss was nearly double for those taking tirzepatide — more than 11%, compared with about 6% for those taking semaglutide. According to the new study, individuals with type 2 diabetes had less significant weight loss than those without a diagnosis — but average weight loss was still greater among those taking tirzepatide.

CNN —GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy may help lower the risk of certain cancers, a new study suggests. About 40% of new cancer diagnoses are associated with excess weight, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The risk was cut by more than half for gallbladder cancer, meningioma, pancreatic cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma, a kind of liver cancer. It was also significantly reduced for ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, multiple myeloma, esophageal cancer, endometrial cancer and kidney cancer. And GLP-1 medications interact with systems related to insulin production.

CNN —People who take Ozempic or Wegovy may have a higher risk of developing a rare form of blindness, a new study suggests. The condition is relatively rare — up to 10 out of 100,000 people in the general population may experience it — but the doctors noted three cases in one week, and each of those patients was taking semaglutide medications. The risk was found to be greatest within the first year of receiving a prescription for semaglutide. Semaglutide prescriptions have soared in the US, which could raise the number of people at risk for a potential side effect. But the large number of people who are taking semaglutide should raise confidence that the absolute risk of developing NAION as a result is rare.
