Tropical Storm Ernesto, which formed Monday as the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, is swirling toward the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. The Atlantic front quickly developed into a tropical storm over the course of the day, as parts of the East Coast are still reeling from the havoc of Hurricane Debby. Ernesto is forecast to strengthen over the next few days and could reach hurricane strength by Thursday. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted a 90% chance of an above-normal number of storms by the time the hurricane season concludes in November. Part of the reason for that above-normal activity includes near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic.

A letter written in 1945 from a naval base in Virginia wound up in a glass bottle more than 800 miles away in Florida, where it was found last week — nearly eight decades later — after Hurricane Debby swept a swath of the state. The letter was addressed to someone named Lee from someone named Chris. But it was Suzanne Flament-Smith, 46, of Tampa, Fla., who found it on Wednesday. By then, the storm had passed Florida, leaving a trail of debris in its path. “There was so much trash,” she said, “water bottles, sunscreen bottles, Crocs, a lot of random articles, too.”

Tropical Storm Debby, which came ashore as a category 1 hurricane along the Florida coast early Monday, will move across the Southeast on Tuesday at roughly the speed of a human walking. Tropical Storm Debby has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane ahead of its anticipated landfall on Florida's Gulf Coast on Monday, U.S. forecasters said late Friday. The hurricane was about 65 miles west of Cedar Key, Florida, and about 100 miles west of Tampa, and moving north at about 12 mph, the center said. Debby is expected to continue strengthening before it reaches the Big Bend coast on Monday, weakening after it moves inland across northern Florida and southern Georgia, it said. As Tropical Storm Debby churned through the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, Lucia Trapani was securing patio furniture and offering refunds to people who had booked stays at the motel she manages on an island off Florida’s northwestern coast. As Tropical Storm Debby moves inland off the Gulf of Mexico this week, it is expected to bring intense rainfall and flooding across northern Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. The National Weather Service forecast a rare high risk of excessive rain for the region. Widespread flash flooding and river flooding are expected, with 10 to 20 inches of rainfall along the coast. Since Friday, the front developed from a potential tropical cyclone to a tropical depression, and it continues to draw strength from warm, tropical water. Tropical Storm Debby was expected to continue moving north at 15mph and hug Florida's west coast. The outer portions of a tropical system, which later became Tropical Storm Debby, saturates Fort Myers Beach, Fla., on Saturday. The named tropical storm designation means the front has sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph.
