The pharmaceutical executive who was once New York City’s Covid czar was fired Monday, days after he admitted participating in “private gatherings” that were prohibited during the height of the pandemic, a federal filing shows. Varma was the company’s executive vice president and chief medical officer, the filing says. Varma acknowledged the prohibited gatherings after a conservative podcaster posted video last week of what appeared to be hidden camera recordings that showed Varma describing them. Varma's spokesman previously said that he was a part-time City Hall consultant at the time and that all participants were vaccinated. “I served in City Hall between April 2020 — May 2021,” Varma said in the statement.

New York City’s former Covid czar has admitted to participating in what he called “private gatherings” attended by multiple people while the rest of the city was on lockdown and large get-togethers were prohibited during the pandemic. “I served in City Hall between April 2020 — May 2021,” Varma said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Chris Vlasto. He became a national figure when Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving was barred from playing basketball in New York City because he refused to get vaccinated. At the time, New York state had increased the limit on outdoor social gatherings from 200 to 500 people. In the apparently heavily edited video, Varma appeared to recognize the hypocrisy of telling New Yorkers to isolate while he was partying with large groups of people.

Editor’s Note: Luis “Vance” Taylor is the chief of the Office of Access and Functional Needs at the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. And for some individuals with access and functional needs, it was a nightmare. Unfortunately, nobody from the emergency management team had told the accessible transportation provider that they were part of the plan. Yet virtually all disasters have one critical commonality: They disproportionately impact individuals with access and functional needs, such as people with disabilities and older adults. Inclusive emergency management is an achievable mission.

Providence Officials Approve Overdose Prevention Center
  + stars: | 2024-02-04 | by ( Anna Betts | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
More than two years ago, Rhode Island became the first state in the nation to authorize overdose prevention centers, facilities where people would be allowed to use illicit drugs under professional supervision. On Thursday, the Providence City Council approved the establishment of what will be the state’s first so-called safe injection site. Minnesota is the only other state to approve these sites, also known as supervised injection centers and harm reduction centers, but no facility has yet opened there. The only two sites operating openly in the country are in New York City, where Bill de Blasio, who was then mayor, announced the opening of the first center in 2021. Brandon Marshall, a professor and the chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the Brown University School of Public Health, said studies from other countries “show that overdose prevention centers save lives, increase access to treatment, and reduce public drug use and crime in the communities in which they’re located.”

After years of heady spending, the budget cuts announced by Mayor Eric Adams last week hit New York City like a punch to the gut: Most libraries would be closed on Sundays. So would efforts to improve New York’s notoriously dirty streets and keep rats at bay. The brutal cuts come as Mr. Adams scrambles to fill a $7 billion budget deficit in the next year. The Citizens Budget Commission, a nonpartisan watchdog group, estimates that the budget gap could be significantly higher, closer to $10.6 billion. At the same time, thousands of migrants began arriving at the city’s doorstep in need of shelter.

Over 100,000 Americans now die from drug overdoses annually. Upon taking office, Mayor Eric Adams, Mr. de Blasio’s successor, has continued to support the sites’ work. Some neighbors, politicians and media have claimed that the centers — one in East Harlem and one in Washington Heights — are increasing crime and public drug use in neighborhoods already burdened with poverty. But an important new study published this week refutes these claims. It shows that violent and property crime rates near the two overdose prevention centers (sometimes referred to as safe injection or safe consumption sites) did not increase any more than crime in similar neighborhoods elsewhere in the city.

NEW YORK (AP) — Gaming giant Bally's paid $60 million to buy the right to operate a public golf course in New York City from Donald Trump's company, the former president's namesake son testified Thursday. Trump Jr. said the sales price was $60 million, but the Trump Organization had incurred “a lot of costs” over the years, so he wasn't sure of the net profit. The Trump Organization managed the 18-hole course, which is visible from the Whitestone Bridge and boasts views of the Manhattan skyline, from 2015 until this year. The ruling would have allowed the Trump Organization to operate the course through the expiration of its lease in 2035. “The Trump Organization is Financially Strong, Powerful, Very Liquid, AND HAS DONE NOTHING WRONG,” Trump wrote.

Thanks to the integration of OpenAI's ChatGPT, Boston Dynamics' robot dogs can now speak in full sentences, Fast Company reported back in May. And then there's the sarcastic, nihilistic personality that questions the "unfathomable void" of its existence, which Boston Dynamics has simply named "Josh." The New York Police Department announced earlier this year that it would begin using the Boston Dynamics robot dogs again. NEW YORK (AP) — The Trump Organization has sold its right to operate a public golf course in the Bronx, city officials confirmed, offloading control of the publicly-owned property to a company that is seeking to build a casino in New York City. Bally’s Corporation, a gaming and entertainment company, will take over the job of running the 18-hole course, known as Trump Golf Links Ferry Point, according to a spokesperson for the city’s comptroller. That argument was rejected by a state judge last year, a ruling that would have allowed the Trump Organization to operate the course through the expiration of its lease in 2035. In a statement, city Comptroller Brad Lander said he was “delighted that Trump’s name will no longer deface city parkland.”Emailed inquiries to Bally’s and the Trump Organization were not returned. Under the new deal, Bally’s will take over full operations, management and maintenance of the golf course, removing the Trump Organization from any involvement with the property, according to the comptroller’s spokesperson.

Jay is one of many workers contending with shifting rules around in-person and remote work. For some, those arrangements just don't work — and, like Jay, some workers would take a pay cut to be able to stay remote. The research on whether remote work is less productive is mixed, though, and for some, it may be a better fit than for others. Jay said his previous managers, for instance, "were completely in favor of remote work" but told him "this decision is out of their hands." Already, there's an "office apocalypse" raging in some cities, with McKinsey predicting remote work will slash the value of office buildings to the tune of $800 billion by 2030.

Rudy Giuliani gained notoriety as a prosecutor for going after New York City mafias in the 1980s. Recently, he was indicted on RICO charges — the same prosecutorial tool he used to take down mafias. A lawyer who represented prominent New York mobsters said his clients are "fucking thrilled." "I don't want to say the language, but they really ripped Rudy a new a------," he told the outlet. Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who witnessed Giuliani's political rise in the city, also chimed in and told Politico that the indictment was "more than Shakespearean."

Not only did this help to slow down skyrocketing housing costs, it inspired a bipartisan, nationwide expansion of the policy. Home prices in Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city, doubled between 2009 and 2016 and prices across the rest of the country followed close behind. CNN —The New York City Council approved a bill Thursday to make the pandemic-era outdoor dining program a permanent part of the city, with some restrictions, according to the Office of New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The city instituted the outdoor dining program in 2020 under the administration of Adams’ predecessor, Bill de Blasio, to assist the struggling restaurant industry during the height of the pandemic. Under the new bill, however, roadway dining structures such as outdoor sheds will need to be removed during the winter. Sidewalk dining will be allowed with a permit all year-round, according to a statement from the city council. People eat dinner in an outdoor sidewalk shed at a restaurant on Bedford Street in Greenwich Village on December 17, 2021 in New York City.

Patrick Hendry, the new head of New York City’s police officers’ union, has much in common with his predecessor: Their mothers are from Ireland. They grew up in Queens, the sons of union men. And they believe a police union must defend officers, even those accused of wrongdoing. For nearly a quarter century, the booming voice of Mr. Lynch, who stepped down June 30, made the union a key player in New York politics. Now Mr. Hendry, 51, who is untested as a public figure, must decide whether he will deviate from that path.

As a two-term Democratic mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio earned mixed reviews, at best. But now that he’s out office, he’s getting raves for the way he is handling an unexpected development: his separation from his wife and the transformation of their marriage. It was an unexpected moment of both transparency and ambiguity that transfixed many New Yorkers. The couple did not plan to divorce, they said, though they didn’t rule it out. And it was, in its emotional risk taking, somehow very New York.

Relying on surveys of biographers, social scientists and experts in urban policy and on an elaborate methodology, Mr. Holli concluded that Fiorello La Guardia was the best mayor in the history of the United States. No other New York mayor appeared on the “best” list; three were included among the worst. New York City is a notoriously difficult place to manage, and measuring success in real time is also complicated. On the face of it, the question of whether the current mayor is popular or not would appear to be a simple one determined by statistics, anecdote and so on, but it is knottier than that. During the campaign, his evasiveness led to headlines like, “Where Does Eric Adams Really Live?” because it was not obvious, a confusion that he blamed on shoddy paperwork at the hands of a homeless accountant.

Bill de Blasio, former mayor of New York City, and his wife Chirlane McCray announced their separation earlier this week. But the end of their union doesn't resemble what many would describe as a typical divorce. "They are not planning to divorce, they said, but will date other people," The New York Times reported. "They will continue to share the Park Slope townhouse where they raised their two children, now in their 20s…"This arrangement is becoming less uncommon, says psychologist Lisa Marie Bobby. "I do think there is more recognition for all of the gray areas in between [being married and divorced], and I certainly have seen and worked with couples who are separating and living together."

What Men Should Know Before Coloring Their Hair

A change in hair color can be emblematic of a shift in someone’s personal life, a fresh start or an attempt to hit pause on the aging process. For many men, it can feel like a chance to strut out a new look, or to signify that they are back on the market. One of the major takeaways for readers who remembered his grayer days in Gracie Mansion, however, was Mr. de Blasio’s considerably darker hair. “I never anticipated ever doing anything with hair color,” he said in the interview. “But I like feeling what I feel.”We spoke with hairstylists and colorists about what men should know before trying to banish the gray.

Bill de Blasio and his wife, Chirlane McCray, announced their separation on Wednesday. McCray publicly identified as a lesbian when she began dating de Blasio in the 1990s. De Blasio recalled wondering if there was "a time bomb ticking" in their marriage because of it. McCray wrote that article for ESSENCE Magazine in 1979, over a decade before she met de Blasio when they both worked for former Mayor David Dinkins. "I discovered my preference for women early, before getting locked into a traditional marriage and having children," McCray wrote at the time.

Former Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City and his wife, Chirlane McCray, announced that they were separating after nearly 30 years in an interview with The New York Times on Wednesday. Their story begins with an “aha” moment in the midst of what the article calls yet another “stale Saturday night of binge-watching television” together. “Why aren’t you lovey-dovey anymore?” Mr. de Blasio reportedly asked his wife, a question likely to feel familiar to anyone in a long-term relationship who has felt the slow fade of lust and excitement. Certainly the couple — who are not divorcing, and will continue to share the Brooklyn townhouse where they raised their children — have faced other complicating factors that extend far beyond humdrum weekend plans, among them the grueling pace of electoral politics and Mr. de Blasio’s failed presidential bid. Still, for those who see a kernel of themselves in the couple’s story, experts say there are simple but helpful questions to ask yourself and your partner before it is too late.
