Iran responded to that attack with a drone and missile barrage on Israel that was at the time unprecedented. Israel retaliated with a limited strike on Iran which caused little damage. U.S. defense officials told NBC News that Israel had told their American counterparts about Saturday's strikes ahead of time, but that the U.S. was not involved in the attack. "The fact that Iran is downplaying the attack and what's been hit is good news," he told NBC News on the phone. "Whether Israel and Iran will think like this is a different matter," he added.

And it could bring the devastating war in Gaza closer to an end, experts say – if Israel and its allies can seize the opportunity. Before the war, power in Hamas was decentralized – with Gaza political chief Sinwar just one of many leaders, Chorev said. Shira Efron, a senior director of policy research at the Diane and Guilford Glazer Foundation said Sinwar’s killing gives Netanyahu the chance to claim a victory. Sinwar’s killing could also pave the way for a hostage and ceasefire agreement, since he was believed to be one of the main blockers of a deal. Chorev, from Tel Aviv University, added that Netanyahu could see Sinwar’s killing as a moment to cement his legacy.

He was elected to Hamas’ main decision-making body, the Politburo, in 2017 as the political leader of Hamas in Gaza branch. Back in Gaza, Sinwar has risen through the ranks and quickly became a key player within Hamas. As the political leader of Hamas, Sinwar focused on the group’s foreign relationships. The talks involved senior figures from Israel, Hamas, the United States, Qatar and Egypt. In order for Israel to destroy Hamas, it needs to destroy a critical mass of power centers, not just him,” he said.

“Some darknesses refuse to fade,” the poet Danielle DeTiberus observed after contemplating “Judith Beheading Holofernes” by Artemisia Gentileschi. Having recently seen the dark paintings by Pierre Soulages at Lévy Gorvy Dayan gallery, in Manhattan, the poet’s lyric resonated. DeTiberus, in “The Artist Signs Her Masterpiece, Immodestly,” sees in Gentileschi’s depiction of a revenge killing the assertion of her agency. Kerry James Marshall used jet black skin tones to make Black people seem like human archetypes birthed from a subterranean womb. Ad Reinhardt painted subtly dark canvases at the edge of our eyes’ scotopic capabilities, their hues legible only after prolonged looking.

An Israeli army officer walks on July 25, 2014 during an army-organised tour in a tunnel said to be used by Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip for cross-border attacks. Israel launched its military offensive aiming at destroying tunnels used by Gaza militants. Israeli troops are massing on the border of Gaza following Saturday's surprise attack inside of Israel, but their orders are still unclear. What is clear, however – according to Israeli troops who've fought inside Gaza before – any invasion is going to be difficult, dangerous and bloody. Officials expect the tunnels and ground throughout the area to be booby-trapped with explosives.

CNN —In Guy Nattiv’s new feature film “Golda,” which arrived in theaters Friday, Helen Mirren plays Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir during the crisis of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Accordingly, the movie is inevitably fodder for an ongoing discussion about whether non-Jewish performers should play Jewish roles. They made significant advances, threatening all of Israel, until Israel ultimately turned the tide to retain the land it had acquired in 1967. Join us on Twitter and FacebookInstead, the point is that the Yom Kippur War was a complicated conflict for territory and geopolitical advantage, abetted by prejudice and intransigence on every side. White non-Jewish actors can be cast as White Jewish characters because White Jewish people (like White Irish people or White Italian people) are, at the moment, generally perceived and accepted as White.

Rats are taking refuge in cars, chewing through wires and leaving owners with big repair bills. There are three things you can do to help prevent rats from living under the hood of your car. Do not park above or near storm drain basins or openings to sewers – Norway rats are called sewer rats for a reason. One woman told The Times that a rat chewed through a sensor wire in her car, which cost $700 to fix. "What they're doing is inadvertently attracting rats or other rodents onto the property," he said.
JERUSALEM — Harrowing, previously unseen images from 1938′s Kristallnacht pogrom against German and Austrian Jews have surfaced in a photograph collection donated to Israel’s Yad Vashem memorial, the organization said Wednesday. German Nazis ransack Jewish property during Kristallnacht, most likely in the town of Fuerth, Germany, on Nov. 10, 1938. Yad Vashem via APThe violence is widely considered a starting point for the Holocaust, in which Nazi Germany murdered 6 million Jews. Firefighters, SS special police officers and members of the general public are all seen in the photos participating in the Kristallnacht. His descendants, who declined to give his name, donated the album to Yad Vashem as part of the institution’s effort to collect Holocaust-era objects kept by survivors and their families.
