TOKYO — Lawmakers in Japan voted Monday to retain the embattled Shigeru Ishiba as prime minister despite his long-governing party’s dismal showing in parliamentary elections last month. Ishiba, a straight-talking former defense minister, received 221 votes compared with 160 for Yoshihiko Noda, leader of the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party. Many Japanese officials assume Trump is going to be “more straightforwardly anti-China,” and that Japan will be “somehow miraculously left off the hook,” he said. Though Japan has already pledged to double defense spending to 2% of gross domestic product by 2027, “that’s probably not going to be enough to satisfy Trump,” Boling said. Harris lost all seven swing states to President-elect Donald Trump, while her party’s Senate candidates narrowly held Wisconsin, Nevada and open seats in Michigan and Arizona. In some races, the differences between the Senate candidates’ and Harris’ performances were more pronounced among subsections of the Democratic coalition. While Trump won independents by 2 points, Rosen won the group by 6. Appearing Monday on Fox News, Homan said Trump 2.0 will be like his first term but with more deportations. During his first term, Trump also promised mass deportations. But that’s about half the 2.9 million deportations undertaken during Barack Obama’s first term and fewer than the 1.9 million deportations during Obama’s second term. It’s on par with Biden’s 1.49 million deportations, according to updated calculations Bush-Joseph shared with me.

Major stock indexes soared Wednesday morning in the wake of Donald Trump's decisive victory in Tuesday's presidential election. The last time the Dow, which represents larger, more established firms, saw a 1,000-point jump in a single day was November 2022. NBC News is projecting that Trump will finish with 276 Electoral College votes in his defeat of Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent. Trump has promised to extend or enact sweeping tax cuts and deregulatory policies that are widely supported across the business community. That represents market pushback on one of Trump's key policy planks: A weaker dollar that would support U.S. exports.

Julian Quinones/CNNFormer Trump administration officials have outlined the speed at which they intend to dismantle the progress the Biden administration made on climate change. Trump has publicly distanced himself from the ideological blueprint, but CNN found at least 140 authors worked in the Trump administration. But given the momentum of the clean energy train, some experts and analysists doubt that Trump would be able to derail it entirely. While the green trend in economics now has Republican states like Texas leading the nation in clean energy installations, Germany, Japan and China got there first. Trump’s plan is to undo that progress, throw billions of dollars of clean energy investment out the window and give other countries the economic opportunity, instead.
