London CNN —King Charles III was in his element this week as he celebrated a very special moment for his foundation at St. James’s Palace in London. On Tuesday, the 75-year-old monarch attended the inaugural awards of his King’s Foundation, so we thought, why not take our Royal News readers along with us? Now, to rewind for just a moment – King Charles set up the charity back in 1990 when he was still the Prince of Wales. On a Friday afternoon in late April, President Biden brought celebrities and elite social media influencers together for a White House reception. Jonathan M. Katz, an independent journalist and sharp critic of the administration, was shocked to get an invitation. When he met Mr. Biden, he pointedly asked about military aid to Israel and suggested he was supporting a “genocide.” Mr. Biden answered politely, but then appeared to grow impatient. “I trust you as far as I can throw your phone.” Aides then ushered Mr. Katz away. The episode, which Mr. Katz recorded on video and shared with his roughly 100,000 followers, was one in a series of Mr. Biden’s awkward attempts to manufacture online enthusiasm for his candidacy.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland departs for a recess during a House Judiciary Committee hearing entitled “Oversight of the U.S. Department of Justice”, in Washington, D.C., U.S., June 4, 2024. Attorney General Merrick Garland will not be prosecuted for contempt of Congress because his refusal to turn over audio of President Joe Biden's interview in his classified documents case "did not constitute a crime," the Justice Department said Friday. In a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Justice Department official cited the department's longstanding policy not to prosecute for contempt of Congress officials who don't comply with subpoenas because of a president's claim of executive privilege. Garland is the third attorney general to be held in contempt of Congress. He has defended the Justice Department, saying officials have gone to extraordinary lengths to provide information to the committees about special counsel Robert Hur's classified documents investigation, including a transcript of Biden's interview with him.

To the Editor:Re “The Day My Old Church Canceled Me,” by David French (column, June 10):Mr. French’s discussion of the day his church canceled him is a stunning exposition of the extreme polarization in our society. What has happened to the right to think differently, to disagree and to engage in reasoned discourse? To the Editor:I enjoy reading David French’s thoughtful columns even though I, an atheist, don’t always agree with him. He has helped teach me to keep my heart open to those I might consider political opponents. So I was heartbroken to read his recent piece about the attacks and abandonment his family suffered at their former church.

Major League Baseball said Friday night it has disciplined umpire Pat Hoberg for violating the league’s gambling rules, and that he is being held out of games during this season while an appeal is considered. Multiple players have been punished for gambling violations, including Tucupita Marcano, who got a lifetime ban for betting on baseball. Now, an umpire has been punished, with Hoberg becoming the only known umpire in recent history to have been disciplined for a matter related to gambling. “During this year’s Spring Training, Major League Baseball commenced an investigation regarding a potential violation of MLB’s sports betting policies by Umpire Pat Hoberg,” MLB said in a statement. AdvertisementThe most severe is that anyone found to have gambled on a baseball game they are directly tied to — “any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform,” as the rules formally put it — is to be banned permanently from the game.

“I believe he’ll be a pro-life president in the future also.”Many senior Trump administration alumni and allies are now mapping out and drafting policy options for a second Trump term. A second Trump term would also put back in place and expand restrictions on Title X grants – federal funds for public and nonprofit groups that provide family planning. Resurrecting these actions in a second Trump would almost entirely be up to the discretion of whomever he appoints to lead the relevant federal agencies. With Roe v. Wade’s protections erased, anti-abortion activists would like a second Trump administration to push harder than it did before – especially in restricting access to mifepristone. Abortion rights advocates worry he could play an outsize role shaping abortion restrictions in a potential second Trump administration.

Mr. Biden and Mr. Zelensky will meet on Thursday and sign a security agreement, said Jake Sullivan, Mr. Biden’s national security adviser. Mr. Biden faces the hurdle of convincing his allies, starting with Mr. Zelensky, that the United States plans to stay in the fight with Ukraine, no matter what happens in November. Mr. Biden told Mr. Zelensky last week, in France, that “I apologize for the weeks of not knowing what was going to pass,” and put the onus on Republicans in Congress. During a trip to Normandy last week, Mr. Biden appeared to have persuaded France, one of the last holdouts, to support the deal. “The administration has been quick to get aid to Ukraine once Congress moved, and that’s to its credit,” he said.

“The American principle that no one is above the law was reaffirmed,” President Biden said after former President Donald J. Trump was convicted last month of falsifying records to cover up a sex scandal. “No one in this country is above the law,” David Weiss, the special counsel who prosecuted Hunter Biden on gun charges, said after Mr. Biden was convicted this week. The expression has been used by plenty of political figures in recent weeks, including Vice President Kamala Harris (“Donald Trump thinks he is above the law,” she said at a recent campaign event). The phrase “above the law” has appeared in The New York Times 100 times this year alone. The specific origin of the phrase is not clear, with several people getting credit for pushing it forward.

One of the biggest bangs heard in the history of wine, on a May evening in 1976, caused barely a ripple in the home of Warren and Barbara Winiarski, the proprietors of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars in Napa Valley. The day before, a 1973 Stag’s Leap cabernet sauvignon had won a tasting in Paris that pitted some of the greatest French wines against bottles from upstart California. His article, “Judgment of Paris,” trumpeted a shocking David-over-Goliath triumph that gave the fledgling California wine business a swift dose of international credibility. “The unthinkable happened: California defeated all Gaul,” Mr. Taber wrote. Almost 50 years later, marketers are still using that tasting, re-enacting it countless times, to sell California wines around the world.

An artillery unit moves near the Israeli northern border with Lebanon on November 8, 2023 in Tel Aviv, Israel. Hezbollah said it had launched rockets and weaponized drones at nine Israeli military sites in a coordinated attack on Thursday, ramping up hostilities on Lebanon's southern border for the second consecutive day. The attacks were carried out in retaliation for an Israeli strike on Tuesday that killed a senior Hezbollah field commander. Hezbollah said in a statement it had fired volleys of Katyusha and Falaq rockets at six Israeli military locations. Its Al-Manar television reported more than 100 rockets fired at once.

Do they go from success to success, powered by their natural brilliance? The first is the social science answer. Social science researchers give promising children intelligence tests, and then they check in on them over the ensuing decades to see how much the students’ early intelligence correlates with lifetime success. The social science answer is that higher intelligence correlates strongly with positive educational and career outcomes. By the 1950s, two-thirds of the Terman kids had become college graduates, a figure 10 times that of the general population.

It was not immediately clear how many weapons Hezbollah, a powerful militia and political faction backed by Iran, launched into Israel on Thursday. The assault included a number of drones aimed at Israel’s northern military headquarters, Hezbollah said. Israel’s military said in the afternoon that Hezbollah had sent more than 40 rockets across the border, but the barrage continued well into the evening. Hours later, Israel had not updated that number, but a military spokesman called it Hezbollah’s most serious attack since October. At least four people were injured in the assault on Thursday, according to Israel’s military and its emergency service, Magen David Adom.
