Despite receiving complaints of exploitation from students, Bondi and then-California Attorney General Kamala Harris both declined to join the investigation. Harris attacked Trump in the 2020 and 2024 elections and painted him as a business fraud and threat to democracy. Now, if confirmed by the Senate, Bondi is set to become President-elect Trump’s attorney general. Some Florida attorneys have defended Bondi and said she followed norms as state attorney general. And, if she declines to prosecute prosecutors for political reasons, will be forced out by Trump like her predecessors.

She was elected in 2011 to her first political position – Florida attorney general – and was the first woman to hold that office. “Knowing her as a trial attorney and the attorney general,” Colton told CNN, “I feel that she would be very qualified for this job.”Dave Aronberg, a Palm Beach County state attorney who worked for Bondi when she was attorney general in Florida, told CNN that while Bondi will carry out Trump policies loyally, she is likely to treat Justice Department employees fairly. And for Trump’s opponents, Aronberg said not to expect a better pick for attorney general. “Pam Bondi is the best attorney general that Donald Trump is going to nominate,” Aronberg said. Since leaving the Florida attorney general post in 2019, Bondi has worked Ballard Partners, a lobbying firm with deep ties to Trump and his incoming chief of staff Susie Wiles.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. In the US, prosecutors are given enormous power to apply the law as they see fit, choosing who to charge and what to charge them with. Evidence of their misdeeds can secure convictions and allow for strict sentences that otherwise couldn’t be imposed. Bill Bramhall/Tribune Content AgencyThe 97-page indictment unveiled by Willis last week cites a lot more evidence than could be arrayed against a sandwich served at lunch. “We are the chief law enforcement officers in each jurisdiction, with the weighty power to deprive others of their freedom,” Aronberg observed.

CNN —Whether they are called district attorneys, state’s attorneys or something else, the job of local prosecutors has traditionally flown under the national political radar. In fact, unlike the attorney general, a local district attorney cannot be fired by the president. The lesson for Meadows is that the local district attorney isn’t automatically bound by any deal with the feds. Willis and Bragg are not the only state prosecutors making headlines this year. Trump’s legal team is so fearful of state court that they have been fighting to “remove” his New York criminal case to federal court.

A Florida man pleaded guilty to criminal mischief and reckless driving after using his pick-up truck to vandalize a rainbow-colored Pride road crossing in West Palm Beach, Florida, in June 2021. The caption reads: “Burning rubber on a rainbow street was categorized as a hate crime but a trans terrorist massacring Christian children was not.”U.S. Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican, introduced a senate resolution to name the Nashville shooting a hate crime (here). John Kennedy, another Republican Senator, asked Attorney General Merrick Garland if a hate crime investigation would be opened on March 28 at a senate hearing (here). Although a man who vandalized a Pride crosswalk in Florida was initially arrested for criminal mischief, reckless driving, and evidence of prejudice (also referred to as a hate crime), he was ultimately charged with the first two only.
Ron DeSantis can't stop extradition from Trump's home in Florida, but he could slow the process. DeSantis can't stop Trump's extradition, but he could slow it downThe standard method of interstate extradition in Florida, according to Holder and Bachner, involves the governors of each state. DeSantis is then required to make sure the indictment is valid before ordering Trump's extradition from Florida. The Florida extradition statute describes the governor's role as simply making sure the extradition demand meets all the legal requirements. It's unlikely that DeSantis will look too closely under the hood of the indictment, Bachner told Insider before news of the grand jury vote Thursday.
