“I was like 35 years old, and I was in Poughkeepsie,” Shanley said in a phone interview during a rehearsal break last month. “I went in to do my laundry, and after a couple of questions, I realized that they would do it for me, fold it and give it back to me. Opening on Wednesday at New York City Center, it is the 13th play the playwright has premiered with the Manhattan Theater Club. “There’s an incredible flair, intelligence, grace and humor to his work,” said Lynne Meadow, the theater company’s artistic director. Most of all, she added, “he writes with such humanity, and so personally.”

“She’s a high priestess of silence and stillness,” the director James Macdonald said. An Atlantic Theater Company and National Theater co-production of Baker’s latest play, “Infinite Life,” directed by Macdonald, is in previews now and will open on Sept. 12. “Infinite Life” also goes further than Baker’s other plays in its exploration of stillness, Macdonald said. “I’m interested in silence, I’m interested in noise, I’m interested in speed, I’m interested in stillness. To me it does feel like writing a play feels a bit like composing a piece of music.

When the New York Philharmonic honored the work of the film composer John Williams this past spring, the director Steven Spielberg introduced a clip of the opening scenes of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” — without the music. The clip was played again, this time with the orchestra joining in. On June 30, the rugged archaeologist at the heart of that film (played by Harrison Ford) will return for the fifth entry in the franchise, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” He’ll be accompanied, as ever, by Williams’s indispensable music. The composer, who turned 91 this year, had said it would be his final film score. “If they do an ‘Indiana Jones 6,’ I’m on board.”

Nearly eight miles north of Times Square, the United Palace in Washington Heights is a dazzling remnant of a golden age of cinema. On Sunday, it will provide the backdrop for Broadway’s biggest night. This former Loew’s “Wonder Theater,” at Broadway between 175th and 176th Streets, is beguiling, if mysterious. Its landmark exterior — where pigeons make themselves at home among terra-cotta ziggurats and pilasters — is said to have been influenced by Egyptian, Aztec or Mayan design, or perhaps the architecture of the 16th- to 18th-century Mughal Empire.

It stands out in that show’s sea of impeccable suits. Bergl calls it the Dress. “I’m not discrediting my performance in ‘Good Night, Oscar’ when I say that the Dress does half the work,” she said. When Bergl first met the man behind the Dress, the costume designer Emilio Sosa, he told her, “June Levant’s clothes are armor.”
